Many of the series of shorts LJ mentioned were compiled for Pinwheel in the US. A treasure trove of worthy nominations fall under that umbrella.

I've never heard of Pinwheel but wow, wave of nostalgia on reading that list

I will also be combing the works of Shuki Levy later on for the "trashy international leftovers" section of my nominations

Holy cow, most of those theme songs are as perma-lodged in my brain as any pop single released during the same era.

I realize that no one has nominated anything Scooby-Doo related yet. There are like 20 related series for Scooby-Doo. Whether they are compiled into one thing later or not, I would like to nom:

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?
The Scooby Doo Show
What's New, Scooby-Doo?
Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated

I have enjoyed me many a cartoon in my day.

To help prove this contention, here, for the delectation of the ilx audience, I shall transcribe from memory all the lyrics to the theme for 'Felix the Cat' cartoons:

Felix the Cat, the wonderful, wonderful cat!
Whenever he gets in a fix
He reaches into his bag of tricks.

Felix the Cat, the wonderful, wonderful cat!
You'll laugh so hard your sides will ache,
Your heart will go pit-a-pat,
Watching Felix the Cat, the wonderful cat!
---------------

ftr, Felix the Cat was horribly unfunny, but I watched it anyway, because any cartoon was a treat.

I'm wondering if we should crosspost this to Aeon Flux Top Level, maybe even get Peter Chung to vote.

Coelacanth Green (Leee), Friday, 26 July 2019 19:37 (four years ago) link

Whoops, sorry, I see Hilda and Steven Universe were already nommed.

Steven Universe will probably be my #1, even though it hasn't even ended yet. It's just been so amazing to watch something so imaginative, life-affirming and beautifully queer on mainstream television. It's my favourite TV series of this decade, cartoon or non-cartoon.

Tuomas, Friday, 26 July 2019 19:43 (four years ago) link

And Avatar the Last Airbender was probably my favourite series, cartoon or non-cartoon, of the previous decade. The last 15 years or so have been great for US cartoons with progressive themes.

Tuomas, Friday, 26 July 2019 19:45 (four years ago) link

Pepper Ann
Kim Possible
Azumanga Daioh
The Maxx
X-Men Evolution
Spectacular Spider-Man

I'm mildly (and pleasantly) shocked that Downtown has been nominated twice already!

Tuomas, Friday, 26 July 2019 19:48 (four years ago) link

I worked on one of the masterpieces of shit — it was called Turbo Teen, about a guy who turned into a car. Not just any car, it was a big muscle car. And the people who wrote that show were such jackasses that ... I remember there was one character who was dancing at a dance in one scene, and this guy called out, “Get it down, Jack!” — the writer evidently couldn't quite remember if it was “Get it on” or “Get down,” and then to just give this ‘80s show an authentic '50s touch, “Jack!” It was just so sad! [Laughter.] Somebody brought in an anti-drug pamphlet that showed on the cover a horribly deformed baby whose head looked like a wad of silly putty that had been mangled, and John hung it up on the door and had it saying, "Oh no, I'm turning into Turbo Teen!" That summed it up nicely.
