Metro is ok (depending on the lines and if it's not too crowded).
Buses are impossible. I don't even know how the drivers can work in these conditions.

I’m due at a friend’s Christmas In July launch in about an hour - CiJ is a part of the PR calendar where a retailer’s Xmas season offering is made available to the press, and my friend’s event is for a very posh Yorks/Lancs/Cumbria food retailer. She never fails to launch on the actual hottest day of the year so I will be focused on getting my freebie punning tote bag (last year’s was UP HILL AND DOWN ALE) and not eating any mice pies. I will be eating ALL the smoked salmon though.

mice pies

we'll be lucky to find any mice at all when climate change really starts kicking in

Thank God for the haar. Take notes, humidity: this is moisture in air doing its job and keeping me cool.

This is madness. And I'm usually a fan (not punning btw).

I get concerned Douglas might try licking the steel fan blade but so far he hasn't been that stoopid yet.

can't wait for the forecasted storms this evening. The other night was the best sturm and drang show I've experienced in years.

Hate mince pies enough that they might as well be mice pies LOL...

Just tried to go out. It's insane even compared to yesterday.
It's definitely over 40 atm.
And the rare breeze is even warmer than the ambiant air !

I'm sheltering in my downstairs office at home, which is below street level and north facing. It's the only cool room in the house.

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:41 (four years ago) link

It's like wearing a duffel coat I can't take off. And I think it's cooler here than in London. We at least have a very welcome breeze here.

I'm hoping the boss will tell us to go home early but I fear he's a hot weather person and has just got back from Spain anyway so this is probably all this_is_fine.gif to him.

(As I'm sure it is to many ilxors - my dislike of summer was not well regarded the year my body decided it hated heat and sunlight and sought its revenge in the form of painful rashes and migraines - thankfully it's not doing that yet this year but I will be sure to complain about it at tedious and TMI length on ILX when it does)

Oh that reminds me : in the metro this morning, there was a guy wearing a parka coat with the furry hood and all !
I guess he's dead now.

calzino, Thursday, 25 July 2019 15:02 (four years ago) link

Yeah, there's an "event" aspect to it, checking how high the temperature will rise (beating the historial record of 1947 !), talking about it with EVERYBODY you meet... + knowing it will be over by tomorrow.
Of course, that's because I don't have it bad compared those who really suffer from it.

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 25 July 2019 15:05 (four years ago) link

I saw a few people in coats today. Seriously what the fuck? It’s ungodly hot out there. Oooh thunder!

We went years without A/C. During one heat wave one summer we started freezing wet washcloths, and then shaping them and wrapping them around our cat to keep her cool. She seemed to appreciate it.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 July 2019 17:30 (four years ago) link

I see a lot of people wearing coats during heat waves around here but my area is heavily populated by migrants who have to carry everything they own with them, and winter will be here soon enough.

The Dutch can't seem to put away their shawls, sweaters and jeans even in 37c weather. At least in my part of Amsterdam. It is extremely baffling and kind of unnerving.

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Thursday, 25 July 2019 17:43 (four years ago) link

xp That's crazy. I spent most of the day with my feet in cold water, doing as little as possible apart from breathing (kinda).

To make things even better, due to problems on the rails the whole RERB was disturbed at rush hour. The kind of times when each new train is so full no one can get in so with each train there’s more crowd waiting on the platform... And without AC of course. Nightmare to go home after a hard day, especially for those who have no choice but take this RER... (for that reason, ubers were unavailable in my area and I ended on cityscoot which was ok but still pretty hot when you’re in the sun... and the hot breeze was of no help !)

I have the opposite reaction. I remember a couple of years ago after a particularly brutal hot and humid summer that I was walking around in December in -20C weather and really appreciating how great the cold air is.

silverfish, Thursday, 25 July 2019 18:42 (four years ago) link

Anyway, getting thirtysomething temps starting this weekend. Probably not as bad as Europe but the high humidity we get here is a killer.

silverfish, Thursday, 25 July 2019 18:45 (four years ago) link

fwiw it's 90% humidity here at the moment. at least the temperature has dropped a bit and thunderstorms are on the way (just thunder and lightning so far, must still be quite far away from where I am)

v glad I worked from home today!

Hottest day on record in Nederland today, 41.7 (107) degrees.

Arthur Lowe & Love (Tom D.), Thursday, 25 July 2019 18:51 (four years ago) link

Some RER B trains have AC but yeah even in normal summer weather at rush hour it can be a sauna on there.

21h and still 40 degrees

Yeah, in Montreal at least, when you hit 36 it seems less brutal than 42 in Paris but it's even less bearable on account of the overwhelming humidity.

pomenitul, Thursday, 25 July 2019 19:00 (four years ago) link

in my dumb kansass years we’d hit 42 in the summer but like Paris today, without much humidity. In dumb florida it’d be 33 but 90% humidity. That was way worse than this. I hear there are places where you get 40+ and high humidity and despite my taste for travel those are places I want to avoid.

L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 25 July 2019 19:06 (four years ago) link
