If your office doesn’t have functional aircon, will it be too hot to work in tomorrow?

gyac, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 17:28 (four years ago) link

At least in the uk, there is no maximum temperature according to h&s guidelines - I have unfortunately had cause to look this up even though most of my workplace is very well air conditioned

I don’t have a fan but I do have a freezer full of water bottles in various stages of frozen-ness, a tub of gazpacho in the fridge, ice cream, a folding hand fan and a spritzer bottle. Plus wine, lovely cold rosé.

suzy, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 18:21 (four years ago) link

We have AC at work (SE England) and I have a fan here at home. It's 30degC in here but humidity is low so it's manageable. I am drinking a lot of water throughout the day though. Tomorrow is forecast to be 35 but Friday is 23, and that is going to be interesting.

Right now on the Seine banks it’s getting better (but still pretty warm). Rosé does help !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 19:27 (four years ago) link

I have one big glass of rosé left in the bottle and I’m saving it for a sleep aid.

suzy, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 19:50 (four years ago) link

Ahah wise move. If we survive tomorrow, the grand paris is ours !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link

Right now I’m officially drunk on a peniche. Tomorrow will be dreadful.

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

FYI blueberries are super cheap at the greengrocers’ stands in London right now, so I’m having a handful of blueberries on top of a scoop of Waitrose Duchy Organic vanilla ice cream RIGHT NOW. You won’t be sorry if you do the same.

there's room in the pacific northwest for all of you, as long as you don't mind the volcano(s)

been reading about yakhchāls, which are a sort of ice granary devised by persians way back in the day so they could freeze water in winter and keep the ice through summer. they also have wind funnel chimney towers apparently keeping them near freezing even in summer (?? in iran???)

My first Summer living outside the US (Netherlands) and this European lack of AC is, right now, a fer real fer real learning experience. O|0

Carly Jae Vespen (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 25 July 2019 08:58 (four years ago) link

You picked a good first summer o'er here Capitaine! It's scorching. I'm up north so probably a bit better off than you (I'm guessing?), but good luck all the same. (Still not missing AC though)

we must burn more fossil fuels to cool the planet which is heating at a terrifying pace because we burned fossil fuels

another no-holds-barred Tokey Wedge adventure for men (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 25 July 2019 09:05 (four years ago) link

Ok yes that’s terrible but this is no fucking joke I almost threw up on the bus this morning.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 25 July 2019 09:40 (four years ago) link

This is definitely a bad day to be hungover... I'm not leaving my (cool) office today !
Going home will be a problem, though... I might order a uber or sometthing...

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 25 July 2019 09:44 (four years ago) link

I was thinking of doing the same. I honestly don’t think I could hack public transport later. I think I’d die if I was hungover.

Trying to find a list of all the bus routes that have a decent cooling system like the 468 and dreaming of an app that not only tells you where your bus is but its on board top deck temperature in real time.

nashwan, Thursday, 25 July 2019 09:51 (four years ago) link

my central heating came on earlier! The power cut the other night had reset the heating controls to Auto mode from Off. I thought it was getting rather warm.

calzino, Thursday, 25 July 2019 09:52 (four years ago) link

It got down to like 28 last night fuuuuuuuuck

L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 25 July 2019 09:53 (four years ago) link

it's already 36 & it's not even noon yet

L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 25 July 2019 09:53 (four years ago) link

Metro is ok (depending on the lines and if it's not too crowded).
Buses are impossible. I don't even know how the drivers can work in these conditions.

I’m due at a friend’s Christmas In July launch in about an hour - CiJ is a part of the PR calendar where a retailer’s Xmas season offering is made available to the press, and my friend’s event is for a very posh Yorks/Lancs/Cumbria food retailer. She never fails to launch on the actual hottest day of the year so I will be focused on getting my freebie punning tote bag (last year’s was UP HILL AND DOWN ALE) and not eating any mice pies. I will be eating ALL the smoked salmon though.

suzy, Thursday, 25 July 2019 10:07 (four years ago) link

mice pies

we'll be lucky to find any mice at all when climate change really starts kicking in

what a life, I'm that posh even my dog has his own AC system!

calzino, Thursday, 25 July 2019 10:14 (four years ago) link

Thank God for the haar. Take notes, humidity: this is moisture in air doing its job and keeping me cool.

Leaghaidh am brón an t-anam bochd (dowd), Thursday, 25 July 2019 10:14 (four years ago) link

This is madness. And I'm usually a fan (not punning btw).

pomenitul, Thursday, 25 July 2019 10:19 (four years ago) link

My dog is a moron and won’t sit in front of the fan.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 25 July 2019 10:26 (four years ago) link

I get concerned Douglas might try licking the steel fan blade but so far he hasn't been that stoopid yet.

can't wait for the forecasted storms this evening. The other night was the best sturm and drang show I've experienced in years.

calzino, Thursday, 25 July 2019 10:30 (four years ago) link

Hate mince pies enough that they might as well be mice pies LOL...

Just tried to go out. It's insane even compared to yesterday.
It's definitely over 40 atm.
And the rare breeze is even warmer than the ambiant air !

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 25 July 2019 12:53 (four years ago) link

Yeah this is fucking terrible.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:21 (four years ago) link

I'm sheltering in my downstairs office at home, which is below street level and north facing. It's the only cool room in the house.

Thank God for public libraries.

pomenitul, Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:37 (four years ago) link

Aren't they closed for holidays ?

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:41 (four years ago) link

It's like wearing a duffel coat I can't take off. And I think it's cooler here than in London. We at least have a very welcome breeze here.

I'm hoping the boss will tell us to go home early but I fear he's a hot weather person and has just got back from Spain anyway so this is probably all this_is_fine.gif to him.

(As I'm sure it is to many ilxors - my dislike of summer was not well regarded the year my body decided it hated heat and sunlight and sought its revenge in the form of painful rashes and migraines - thankfully it's not doing that yet this year but I will be sure to complain about it at tedious and TMI length on ILX when it does)

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:42 (four years ago) link

Oh that reminds me : in the metro this morning, there was a guy wearing a parka coat with the furry hood and all !
I guess he's dead now.

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:53 (four years ago) link

lol, undoubtedly.

pomenitul, Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:54 (four years ago) link
