Living in an always somewhat cooler northern part of a country where the national prediction/temperature is forever worse than it is up here, even I am bracing myself for the upcoming 35/37 degrees coming up on Wed/Thurs. Would be a record by quite some margin but it seems like it is really happening this time. :(

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 23 July 2019 00:02 (four years ago) link

Everything's back to normal in Toronto; next few days 25-30°.

I just gave the building super $200 in an envelope for switching out my ancient AC for a newer model last week, which is the most New Yawk thing I've ever done as a tenant here.

here in the heart of the city the overnight low was 27
still on course for 42 tomorrow, "only" 39 today
this heat wave is really something historic I think

It was 62Âș/17Âș in freaking Arkansas this morning. In late July.

Not complaining, but something ain't right.

pplains, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 13:10 (four years ago) link

It's intense, but I like the dog days even more now that I've gotten acquainted with the sheer monotony of English weather.

xp

pomenitul, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 13:13 (four years ago) link

our forecast high for saturday is 22, so a 20 degree (celsius) drop in highs over 2 days.

sorta reminds me of spring in texas, ugh

L'assie (Euler), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 13:13 (four years ago) link

An all-time record for Holland today (39Âș), and expected to be bettered tomorrow.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 13:22 (four years ago) link

yeah I saw that our horror has leaked into the lowlands too, what an abomination
the air today is disgusting: it's unnaturally bright, with a greenish tint.
and our AQI isn't even that horrid today, 72 in my arrondissement (the most polluted in the city). but compared to like Santiago Chile (144 AQI right now), Sao Paolo (141) or Delhi (132) it's paradise here.

Red alert in 20 French departments, including l'Île-de-France. 41 tomorrow is going to be brutal

42 in paname non ? C’est l’enfer

L'assie (Euler), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:05 (four years ago) link

42, you're right. I'll try to spend the day at the library

pomenitul, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:08 (four years ago) link

I'm just not leaving the apartment. as bad as it is inside (26 right now), just getting anywhere else, even the airconned ligne 2, would be worse.

L'assie (Euler), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:19 (four years ago) link

Have to work in Soho (London) tomorrow, dreading getting the Cental Line *all* the way from Tottenham Ct Rd to Epping in scorching heat at the end of the day's rush, I think I might just wait until after 7pm and see, lived in London for 26 years and can't honestly recall it ever forecast as high.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:28 (four years ago) link

probably gonna be a lot of breakdowns around this time tomorrow - trying to work out if I can rentabike all the way home in constant shade

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 14:45 (four years ago) link

paris public trans holding up ok today but on the non airconned lines (most of them) it's no doubt infernal.

my uni sent out a mail saying we should be drinking a glass of water every 15 minutes to keep hydrated!

I’m am so glad I take the bus and not the tube to work but even the bus is brutal right now. Ugh.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 15:15 (four years ago) link

I know that Europe hasn’t needed AC historically blah blah blah but it does now and this is pretty ridiculous. I honestly can’t believe the tube isn’t air conditioned at this point.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 15:17 (four years ago) link

lunchtime footy was very pleasant today

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 15:32 (four years ago) link

In Paris, it's aggravated by the "reduced" activity of most public transportation during the summer holiday (many lines are closed or with reduced service) + many of the streets under construction...
As a result public transportation is crowded and street traffic is heavy although half of the people have already left on holidays.

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 15:39 (four years ago) link

I’ve just experienced the bus... it’s hamman level !

pomenitul, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 17:23 (four years ago) link

If your office doesn’t have functional aircon, will it be too hot to work in tomorrow?

gyac, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 17:28 (four years ago) link

At least in the uk, there is no maximum temperature according to h&s guidelines - I have unfortunately had cause to look this up even though most of my workplace is very well air conditioned

shhh / let peaceful like things (wins), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 17:50 (four years ago) link

I don’t have a fan but I do have a freezer full of water bottles in various stages of frozen-ness, a tub of gazpacho in the fridge, ice cream, a folding hand fan and a spritzer bottle. Plus wine, lovely cold rosĂ©.

suzy, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 18:21 (four years ago) link

We have AC at work (SE England) and I have a fan here at home. It's 30degC in here but humidity is low so it's manageable. I am drinking a lot of water throughout the day though. Tomorrow is forecast to be 35 but Friday is 23, and that is going to be interesting.

just another country (snoball), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 19:23 (four years ago) link

Right now on the Seine banks it’s getting better (but still pretty warm). RosĂ© does help !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 19:27 (four years ago) link

I have one big glass of rosĂ© left in the bottle and I’m saving it for a sleep aid.

suzy, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 19:50 (four years ago) link

Ahah wise move. If we survive tomorrow, the grand paris is ours !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link

Right now I’m officially drunk on a peniche. Tomorrow will be dreadful.

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

FYI blueberries are super cheap at the greengrocers’ stands in London right now, so I’m having a handful of blueberries on top of a scoop of Waitrose Duchy Organic vanilla ice cream RIGHT NOW. You won’t be sorry if you do the same.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Wednesday, 24 July 2019 22:23 (four years ago) link

been reading about yakhchāls, which are a sort of ice granary devised by persians way back in the day so they could freeze water in winter and keep the ice through summer. they also have wind funnel chimney towers apparently keeping them near freezing even in summer (?? in iran???)

Carly Jae Vespen (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 25 July 2019 08:58 (four years ago) link

You picked a good first summer o'er here Capitaine! It's scorching. I'm up north so probably a bit better off than you (I'm guessing?), but good luck all the same. (Still not missing AC though)
