Some pretty good scoring already today. Rain and wind hasn't kicked in yet though.

Have so much envy about how Tommy Fleetwood hits his irons. So pure.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 21 July 2019 13:13 (four years ago) link

Two pretty poor birdie attempts by him on the first two holes though.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 21 July 2019 13:16 (four years ago) link

Rickie out of bounds at the first thus a double bogey followed by three straight birdies.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 21 July 2019 13:22 (four years ago) link

Man Fleetwood's putter is stone cold. This could be over fast.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 21 July 2019 13:26 (four years ago) link

BBC is showing 3 hours solid of netball at the same time as the conclusion of the Open is on. Not too happy about that, to be honest. Not too happy.

For the second time this year an imperious last round performance from Jin Young Ko to win a major. She makes it look so easy (even in tough conditions). Felt sorry for Hoo Ji for getting a horrendous plugged lie right under the lip of the bunker at 14 which led to a triple and her falling out of the lead. Hope the weather stays fair for the British Open at Woburn this week.

That was one of the greatest final days play that I've ever seen! Hinako Shibuno wins on her major debut at 20 years old in her first tournament outside of Japan. Just incredible play and smiling all the way round every round. Salas played a great final round and was unlucky not to make a play off. Also Jin Young Ko only 2 shots off the winning score which would have been her third major victory this year, she is such an incredible player especially on Sundays.

Wish I could emulate Shibuno's swing but given that she's double jointed and her left arms bends the wrong way at address and takeaway I've got no chance.

oscar bravo, Monday, 5 August 2019 10:39 (four years ago) link

iyo how long before they can run a proper mixed tournament with more or less equal chances? thinking short (by men's standards) but difficult holes etc. or is it just as stupid to compare men's and women's golf as it is for other sports

imago, Monday, 5 August 2019 11:37 (four years ago) link

They had an event this year. I think it was either in Jordan or omam, I'm not sure. It was for ladies european tour players, senior European tour players and challenge tour ( level below regularEuropean tour). They did some equations based on average drive length of the respective tours and determined the tee boxes accordingly. A challenge tour guy won iirc but a woman was second and the top 20 had plenty of each grouping. The Australian LPGA/euro event at the start of the season has 2 separate events equal prize money same course where the groupings are alternate, 3 women tee off then 3 men etc. I think Celine Bouiter won the women's section.

Not sure how feasible the Jordan event is going forward cos there will always be arguments about how equal the hole length is etc. Would like to see a high profile mixed doubles event on the PGA or European tour though for sure.

oscar bravo, Monday, 5 August 2019 13:19 (four years ago) link

Would like to know how much of the prize money for the Open comes from the TV rights, because now that the R&A runs the British Open for women it should sell the rights as a package with the men's and split the prize money equally, but I would guess they would argue that the prize fund comes from additional sources too.

wife and i were sitting at a bar eating lunch and caught the last two holes by chance. we were both chuckling at shibuno's (very charming) goofiness, like literally joking about how she was acting like she had never been in a big tournament before i googled her and found out....she had never been in a big tournament. then she turned out to be a stone cold assassin on that winning 20-footer. what an awesome story.

two months pass...

hideki has p much eliminated the pause at the top of his backswing...my world is all askew.

jordan's swing is looking way better with the driver compared to the last 2 years.

brooks on his 'rivalry' with rory - "there is no rivalry. rory hasn't won a major since i've been on tour". Ouch.

at pga tour event in japan tiger starts with 3 straight bogeys, reels off 9 birdies in next 15 to lead at -6.

his iron swing is a thing of beauty.

Watching Dechambeau win in Detroit today was amazing. Averaging 350.6 yards off the tee, hitting an 8 iron 2nd shot from the rough on a par 5 230 yards onto the green. Just ridiculous. P funny when they put his swing side by side with Chris Kirk's and started them at the same time which shows that Bryson swings it so fast that he had hit the ball before Chris Kirk had even got to the top of his back swing.

uspga 2nd week in august. brooks going for 3 in a row.

tiger back playing on thurs in the memorial at muirfield village, 9 of the top 10 taking part should be good.

oscar bravo, Tuesday, 14 July 2020 16:13 (three years ago) link

lol bryson first round of memorial, starting at 10th tee

10- 353 yard drive
11- 362 yard drive
13- 359 yard drive
17- 407 yard drive
1- 423 yard drive

i only saw the first 2 both of which were in the fairway so it's not like he's long and crooked. seriously think if he played st andrews in the summer time he'd drive 6 or 7 of the par 4s. ridiculous.

women's british open superb from start to finish. brutal conditions first 2 days followed by some great playing at the weekend. fantastic job from sophia popov to outplay the field and win a major. she's world number 304 and a symmetra tour grinder so a life changing victory. kudos.

two weeks pass...

I've been playing for 45 years--almost daily for a couple of years in my teens, regularly and semi-regularly at other times, and I mostly stopped through my 20s. The game remains a complete mystery.

I had one of my best 9s a couple of weeks ago. Only 43, but I parred 6 of 9 holes (one with a long putt and one with a chip-in off the green, so there was some luck). Also took an 8 and a 7, and then on the back I was 52.

Last week, I played 15 holes in 78--I could have and should have come in about 93 or 94. But the other three pushed me over 100. I drove great, putted pretty well, and was a nightmare chipping and pitching within 100 yards.

Before I die, or before I physically break down, I want to be able to go out there and shoot in the mid-80s with some consistency. I've been trying forever, and it just never happens. (I'm going to try a few lessons next spring.)

clemenza, Saturday, 12 September 2020 21:56 (three years ago) link

work strictly on chipping and putting imo

Spottie, Sunday, 13 September 2020 04:25 (three years ago) link

Unless you have a terrible slice or hook problem I agree that putting and dropping your approach shots onto the green make the difference between par or not par. This is not my wisdom, but my dad was a HS golf coach whose teams always placed high in the state tournament, a low-handicapper, and had five attested lifetime holes-in-one. He loved to talk golf. I listened in order to be able to converse with him sensibly.

clemenza, Friday, 18 September 2020 01:34 (three years ago) link

watched 10+ hours of this yesterday. beautifully brutal with only 3 players breaking par on the day - bryson, bubba, and hideki.

villain patrick reed by one shot over villain bryson dechambeau at the halfway point.

has there every been a great player (4 majors is unquestionably great imo) who has failed so consistently and completely whenever he has had to play around a difficult golf course in firm conditions as mcilroy has? especially if it's windy as well? paul mcginley likes to pull out the stat that rory has never won a tournament where the winning score is worse than -12, and watching rory play that doesn't surprise me. but you'd figure he'd get it done at least once.

oscar bravo, Saturday, 19 September 2020 12:55 (three years ago) link

oscar bravo, Saturday, 19 September 2020 12:56 (three years ago) link

boo. not quite as difficult today. greens look softer.
rory -2 front nine which is good playing.

oscar bravo, Saturday, 19 September 2020 18:21 (three years ago) link

man with the coolest trigger move in golf matt wolff leads by 2 from bryson.
man with swing of my dreams louis o. another 2 back. rory still in it at 1 over.
will be rooting,as ever, for hideki. turn on the sub air and let the carnage commence.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 20 September 2020 11:21 (three years ago) link

I have never actually seen Bryson and his new swing this year. Cyborg.

Wolff has more hitches in his swing than I don't know what! Even his little pre-swing address has a hitch.
