I thought of the retired cop who hangs out at my Starbucks, explaining each detail in the Mueller investigation for almost two years until April happened; he'd pinned more hopes on Mueller than Adam Schiff.

I really wish the Democrats would stop looking to Mueller to lead the impeachment charge when they have more than enough ammo already at their disposal to begin proceedings. If it interferes with the election at this point, it's their leadership's own damn fault for being chickenshit.

Wait, Dems are going to clear the decks on government funding and debt ceiling for the remainder of Trump's term, forfeiting all leverage, but set up a major crisis point for Republicans in the first summer of a potential Dem presidents' term? This seems like a very bad idea. https://t.co/dKwFKilPyT

reassuring!

So Jane Meyer wrote a piece in which the Dem party establishment expresses its regret about forcing Al Franken's resignation. Meyer, one of our best political reporters, fucked this one up. This combination of profile and investigation makes the subject sympathetic, and I'm sorry but Franken had many allegations of sexual harassment. Gillibrand and the others were right to ask for his resignation. An investigation would've confirmed what we suspected.

i mean...do they WANT impeachment proceedings going on in summer/fall 2020? is the thinking that all republicans will be in lockstep against it, most democrats will be for it, therefore it'll obliterate all other issues (including pesky progressive initiatives supported by the squad + sanders/warren, if they're the nominee) and turn everything into a referendum on trump, and they see that as a situation that likely ends up with the democratic nominee winning, no matter who it is?

or are they just fuckin dorks?

Trump continued: "In fact, they said literally 100%, this never happens, I think it was close to 100, but 100% of the island itself was watching. They liked those pageants. I've had a great relationship with Puerto Rico. I'm the best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico."

That's how I see it, yes. Not because they want it to drown out progressivism, but because they (correctly!) see the American public as having a very short attention span. They may not think they can spin this out into 18 months of "Trump is a crook" leading the news cycle, and if they feel they can get six months of that, they want those six months to be May-November 2020. Now you may say "why CAN'T they make "Trump is a crook" the headline every day for 18 months, since he is, in fact, a huge goddamn crook," and I get that, but I do think that once the Senate votes not to convict, which they will, lots of swing voters are going to see the matter as settled, and the last thing Democrats want is to have that happen in like February 2020.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 22 July 2019 18:52 (four years ago) link

do you think the national attention span will absorb 6 months of "Pocahontas" if EW is nominated?

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 22 July 2019 18:59 (four years ago) link

as with most things in american politics, i would say that about 1/3 of the voting public would be intensely absorbed with it, another 1/3 would want to punch the first 1/3 in the face, while the remaining 1/3 would be standing there with their mouths wide open, clayton kershaw style

Karl Malone, Monday, 22 July 2019 19:14 (four years ago) link

starve the poors to death before heatstroke or drowning can take them, v smart move

U.S. President Donald Trump has argued that many Americans now using SNAP do not need it given the strong economy and low unemployment, and should be removed as a way to save taxpayers as much as $15 billion.

“Some states are taking advantage of loopholes that allow people to receive the SNAP benefits who would otherwise not qualify and for which they are not entitled,” USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue told reporters on a conference call on Monday.

SNAP provides free food to some 40 million Americans, or about 12% of the total U.S. population.

ah yes, that strong economy and low unemployment which nonetheless somehow fails to provide enough food to one in ten americans

Okay, cool, so hopefully this is the thing that will finally rile people up enough to rip him apart in the street.
