someone should really run an Underworld poll sometime considering all the love for them here, but I'd want to wait until after Drift finishes up of course

ufo, Friday, 19 July 2019 03:07 (four years ago) link

count me in concerning cat power. i haven't really listened to her in ages.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Friday, 19 July 2019 07:44 (four years ago) link

Co-sign on the Underworld poll, despite my lack of enthusiasm over the Drift glut.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Friday, 19 July 2019 13:07 (four years ago) link

I always ask this, but anyone have the Google sheet? At the very least I'd like to refresh my memory about the points scheme to use.

Coelacanth Green (Leee), Friday, 19 July 2019 17:45 (four years ago) link

i'll be happy to do the 00's poll over August/early September if we're keen?

imago, Friday, 19 July 2019 19:18 (four years ago) link

Are any of these ever likely to happen?

Jimi Hendrix - some dude
REM - rogermexico.
Shoegaze/Dream Pop/Post-rock (Albums and EPs) - Bee OK
Aphex Twin - Stevie D
Bristol trip-hop - chap

the salacious inaudible (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 19 July 2019 22:42 (four years ago) link

rem has already been done

\///\/// It's the ILX SUPER SUMMER R.E.M. POLL OF POLLS RESULTS THREAD \///\///

mookieproof, Friday, 19 July 2019 22:53 (four years ago) link

No, that's the REM poll that happened, but not the one that was proposed. I can't remember the details now because it was more than 10 years ago (but someone could look into it, if anyone is remotely bothered), but I think that poll was based on people voting from a limited selection of REM tunes that had been selected from an album-by-album series of traditional ILM polls (i.e. where you can only make one vote for one track). Then I copied the idea and did a Blur poll where people could vote for any track by Blur and then it kickstarted this whole neverending list of artist polls and at some point somebody said 'ah, we should do REM again, but this time you can vote for any track by them'. I think.

the salacious inaudible (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 19 July 2019 23:04 (four years ago) link

XP That REM poll wasn't really a standard ballot poll tho.

I can take over Hendrix.

frustration and wonky passion (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 19 July 2019 23:05 (four years ago) link

oh okay

mookieproof, Friday, 19 July 2019 23:13 (four years ago) link

yes, REM needs to be redone because NBS pretty much nailed the reason and that is why they were added to this list.

the Shoegaze/Dream Pop/ Post-rock (Akbums and EPs) will be done but i'm also willing to let someone take over that one if wanted. to tell the truth, i will do New Wave before that one anyways, so i would love it if someone took it over that way it will be done sooner rather than later as i can't see me doing it for at least two years.

Hendrix is yours C. Grisso/McCain

image, ballot poll #100 for the 00's poll just sounds perfect. you are on deck.

Bee OK, Friday, 19 July 2019 23:18 (four years ago) link

doesnt hendrix have a really small catalog?

big city slam (Spottie), Friday, 19 July 2019 23:19 (four years ago) link

Kind of, but we've done bands with small-ish discographies before (Nirvana, Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin etc.).

frustration and wonky passion (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 19 July 2019 23:24 (four years ago) link

true. dunno how accurate this is but it says 174 tracks, which a ton are live and/or posthumous.

big city slam (Spottie), Friday, 19 July 2019 23:27 (four years ago) link

oh Erykah Badu might be good to do sometime too

ufo, Saturday, 20 July 2019 01:21 (four years ago) link

I’m happy to move that poll up in the standings, for sure.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Saturday, 20 July 2019 01:25 (four years ago) link

i'll look forward to it!

ufo, Saturday, 20 July 2019 03:42 (four years ago) link

I’m slammed at work for at least the next couple of weeks but what with the new book and all the timing seems good for REM soon-ish

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Saturday, 20 July 2019 04:18 (four years ago) link

Hendrix song list is missing Slow Walkin' Talk, a demo he recorded with Robert Wyatt, so doesn't look like it's complete.

Making sure that folks have seen this: "Dear Ms. Power, please sound more like Adele" - Cat Power - Artist Poll #99 - VOTING THREAD

The time has come and probably passed for a yacht rock poll.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Monday, 29 July 2019 13:54 (four years ago) link

No, it's the perfect time!

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 29 July 2019 14:05 (four years ago) link

Define "yacht rock"

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Monday, 29 July 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

it's anything that isn't ambient

Karl Malone, Monday, 29 July 2019 20:26 (four years ago) link

lol

budo jeru, Monday, 29 July 2019 20:27 (four years ago) link

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 29 July 2019 20:28 (four years ago) link

Seahawks is ambient yacht rock so there

octobeard, Monday, 29 July 2019 20:43 (four years ago) link

Broadcast! Might there be enough interest in a Broadcast poll? Small discography perhaps, but not really that small.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 00:21 (four years ago) link

i hardly know broadcast but i like the idea of being forced to listen to them in order to produce a ballot for a poll.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 13 August 2019 09:04 (four years ago) link

^ I dig it! :)

The Replacements was another that came up elsewhere recently. I'd happily crunch numbers for that too if no one else has a burning desire to do so.

Wish I was in a better position to vote in the Cat Power one. Very interested to see how that turns out but not quite able to construct a well-informed ballot.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Tuesday, 13 August 2019 09:28 (four years ago) link

Would be very much up for a Broadcast poll.

So this is definitely next? I think I'll turn my mind to such matters in anticipation...

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 08:10 (four years ago) link

Is the 00’s poll albums or tracks?

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 22:27 (four years ago) link

Both!

imago, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 22:42 (four years ago) link

I love love love Broadcast but yeah the catalog is too small to warrant it imo

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 22:59 (four years ago) link

At a quick count, 143 tracks in Broadcast discography, no problem putting together a top 50.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:11 (four years ago) link

I mean, I can already see myself getting annoyed when 'Phantom' and 'Ritual / Looking In' don't make it.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

yeah and like a quarter of those tracks are interstitial things that are around a minute long

xp

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

I mean fine, do whatever, I wouldn't feel compelled to vote in it

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

Smaller discographies don't necessarily warrant a "Top 50" unless the actual results demand it. For instance, when I ran the Sleater-Kinney poll (a discography which at the time was around 100 tracks), the spread was enough that I had a little more than 50 tracks with enough points=two #1's, which I had set as the floor for ranking.

frustration and wonky passion (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:24 (four years ago) link

Total points equivalent to two first-place votes? Oddly enough I now see I cut my last one off at almost exactly that same point (#60 in that case) without consciously applying such a criterion, so that seems intuitively 'right'. There were only ever going to be about 100 real contenders (from ~170) amongst Go-Betweens tracks, but it seemed to work okay.

I cut B&S at #60 as well, but I distinctly remember that being where the number of votes dropped below 10. That was apparently equivalent to ~4 #1s, as the number of votes was freakishly high!

As long as one can cobble together say... a top 30, using similar yardsticks, it may still be worthwhile. Besides, I secretly feel like polls are less about stats than the excuse to listen to and talk about a given artist far, far too much!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 22 August 2019 01:40 (four years ago) link

i did: POLL Will Tear Us Apart – ILM Artist Poll #86 - JOY DIVISION – New Order solo or other groups Poll (aka the Electronic poll) – a NEW ORDER (#37) supplement poll --- Results Thread

even tho there were a fair amount of votes, i don't think the poll was very successful. as far as how many should be counted down? i think it depends on the results, tho i also had set boundaries like at least five votes for most polls. i really couldn't do more than a Top 20 for Joy Division as number 25 only had two votes so i didn't expand.

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 August 2019 02:28 (four years ago) link

Looking closer at the S-K thread, I see I actually used something above 90 points as the floor, with 50th place having 6 votes and 97 points.
