(i think her 'gold rush' cover's better.)

la belle dame sans serif (c sharp major), Monday, 15 June 2009 15:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, that reminds me that there is a killer Buffy Saint Marie cover "Helpless." I heard it on a Jack Nitzsche compilation.

yeah that Buffy St. Marie "Helpless" is quite nice -- also on one of those Nitzsche comps -- a killer Everly Bros. version of "Mr. Soul" ... Super slow and hazy.

has anybody ever covered "Tonight's The Night", or is that just too personal a song to go there?

henry s, Monday, 15 June 2009 17:01 (fourteen years ago) link

OP8 (lisa germano, howe gelb) did a nice cover of 'round and round'

Heard Golden Smog do a great "Revolution Blues" once. They can't be the only one, 'cause that song rocks.

Mercury Rev did "Vampire Blues." Hmm, wonder why more people haven't covered Neil Young?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 15 June 2009 20:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Waco Brothers do Revolution Blues, too.

John Entwistle did a (somewhat disappointingly faithful) cover of Cinnamon Girl:

Matt Weston, Monday, 15 June 2009 20:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Jack Logan covers On The Beach on his 2CD Bulk record. A relic from the 90s lo fi era that still holds up surprisingly well.

bright eyes - on the weekend :)

Wooden Shjips do "Vampire Blues."

Metro Video Centers, Monday, 15 June 2009 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Like Tom Waits, Neil is eminently coverable.

Matthew Sweet also has a live "Mr. Soul" on the "I've Been Waiting" single, and a really good live "Cortez the Killer" with the Indigo Girls, Scarlett Rivera and Jane Scarpantoni on the Girlfriend: Legacy Edition set.

Besides The Bridge, there are a couple of surprisingly good double-CD tributes:

seven months pass...

looks like a whole bunch of (probably pretty boring) neil covers were given to the world last night: http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/awards/grammys/2010-01-30-musicares_N.htm
can't wait to hear Mraz's take on "Lotta Love" ...

...And the Red Hot Chili Peppers' off-key A Man Needs a Maid lumbered. As for Josh Groban's formal treatment of Harvest Moon: bad fit.

uuuuuuuugggghhhh

Introducing the harrowing The Needle and the Damage Done, Dave Matthews said, "Death is a wicked way for life to remind us how precious it is."

Euler, Sunday, 31 January 2010 17:18 (fourteen years ago) link

This was a really mean thing to do to Neil in exchange for donating to his causes. Just sign the checks fer crissakes, don't torture the good old man.

CATBEAST!! (Z S), Sunday, 31 January 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

osh Groban's formal treatment of Harvest Moon

THIS GUY. seriously.

CATBEAST!! (Z S), Sunday, 31 January 2010 17:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Was coincidentally just listening to a pretty amazing Danish art rock/metal band called Kellermensch who cover Don't Let It Bring You Down.

Wasn't there a Shimmydisc band who covered Out Of The Blue Hey Hey My My back in about 89 - possibly with Thurston Moore on backing vocals?

Vancouver thing sounds like it was better than the Grammy thing:

Especially this: "Reed would also come back for a killer F***in' Up with Costello and legendary bluesman James "Blood" Ulmer, decibels pushed as high as they would go."

we went to the thursday show and a few highlights for me were emily haines doing " a man needs a maid" and mark kozelek doing "albuquerque" and "powderfinger". never thought i would ever see elvis costello cranking out the "cowgirl in the sand" guitar solos and actually enjoying it. watching/hearing lou and james blood ulmer were also highs for me.

we sat front row too.

Ok, I only found a version of RHP performing it in '96. Kinda underwhelming, tbh...

dudes, i put together a neil young covers comp (some of which I discovered via this very thread!) check it here:http://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/

Yeah, I love that version -- almost put it on the covers comp, but went with Undisputed Truth's version instead. There'll probably have to be a volume 2! By the way, what's up with covers of Down By The River when in the pre-chorus they're like "sha la la the weather"? That's not in the original is it?

Just discovered this (take note, Tyler):
