At the risk of stating the obvious, the July 2019 US Politics Thread is horse-sh*t

Also it was fifty years ago, and also the alternative to Johnson was freaking Goldwater.

the replies to Chuck's LBJ tweet making fun of Don Cheadle for being a celebrity with an opinion on politics, seemingly unaware that they are cosigning another celebrity's opinion on politics...

"truly think it's difficult for them to grasp that liberals can have mixed feelings prominent liberals"

this is def true. Their main response to Trump/Epstein is "But Clinton". I don't know any liberals who are defending Clinton / Epstein.

well, LBJ was our last liberal president

Chuck Woolery is embroiled in controversy in 2019? I would not have thought that possible. Up next: Warner Wolf.

Glad Gene Rayburn isn’t around to see what’s become of Chuck Woolery.

so, according to DOJ policies, a sitting president can't be indicted

and according to Mueller's logic in his report, he can't recommend charging a sitting president for a crime, because doing so would be unfair to the president because they wouldn't have a chance to defend themselves in a court of law (because they can't be indicted). (99.959345204% of people in this dim country do not understand this)

and also, according to some rule of decorum in the house of representatives, no one can say that the president is racist, either directly or by citing others who have done so, or by pointing out that something the president said is literally the textbook definition of racism.

finally, trump is the most unfairly treated president in history

Think of how bad you'd have to be at politics to not have ads featuring this footage on loop from now until election day 2020 https://t.co/MXlpvNSFAT

Karl Malone, Thursday, 18 July 2019 01:43 (four years ago) link

awwww David French is disgusted

Agree with Guy. “Send her back” is completely and totally unacceptable. It’s not a defense of Omar to say this is not how we treat American citizens. https://t.co/8bJXgWjMEC

that rally was awful

Dan S, Thursday, 18 July 2019 01:49 (four years ago) link

He's the perfect reprobate figurehead for all of the unprincipled american voters, and he has rallied them shockingly well. The new turn in this story, focusing on the democratic congresswomen, really makes me afraid he's going to win again

Dan S, Thursday, 18 July 2019 02:13 (four years ago) link

Eh, not necessarily. "Louder" and "more racist" aren't guarantees of victory.

I hope you are right Alfred, but it is starting to feel like it might be.

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 18 July 2019 04:33 (four years ago) link

that's what disturbs me. but...they've always been there. maybe when Trump goes away, they lose cohesion, access to power, and public boldness.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 18 July 2019 04:41 (four years ago) link

Of course he's going to win again, an electorally significant number of Americans wanted this kind of president, and he has met their expectations plus the economy numbers look good if you don't dig below the surface.

I've expected the n-word and "bitch" at rallies since spring '16, and we may yet get them.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 18 July 2019 12:33 (four years ago) link

The n-word would still sort of surprise me simply because so many of these morons seem to believe as long as they don't use it they can plausibly deny their bigotry.

Chris L, Thursday, 18 July 2019 12:45 (four years ago) link

Anything goes, except women of colour using the f-word.

pomenitul, Thursday, 18 July 2019 12:46 (four years ago) link

My evangelical acquaintances (cons but of the Jimmy Carter type) on fb today are noting the president’s profanity last night, that is, his violation of the third commandment, apparently for the first time at a rally. That used to be the worst thing you could say for conservative Christians, but my acquaintances expect that he’ll again get an exception as the culture further degrades.

Nobody GAF what I think, but engaging in premature, despairing concession to Trump 2020, always accompanied by moaning “this is who we are” or something to that effect, is as offensive to me as actually being a Trump supporter, or as close as makes no difference.
