The other big difference between World Cup Trippier and last season's Trippier is that England played in a back five with Walker there to cover for him.

Trippier's main assets are the quality and accuracy of his cross and his ability with a dead ball and as an old fashioned English winger he might have worked well but high level teams don't play with them any more.

For a while it looked like Poch intended to go with a back five but without Dembele our squad lacked the really commanding midfielder who can protect them.

Probably the best analogue is the role Victor Moses played under Conte. No one thought Moses was a world class right back but he did exceptionally well in a team where everyone knew their role and they never needed to rotate. Moses could go forward because he had two (at the time) excellent recovery defenders in Azpilicueta and Cahill and an erratic but talented one in David Luiz whose mistakes they could also cover for. They also had probably the world's best defensive midfielder in Kante and we haven't come close to finding a player like that. On the other side Marcos Alonso also had an amazing season and hasn't played quite as consistently well as that since.

The closest parallel to that excellent recovery defender in the Spurs squad is Sanchez who has also the pace and ability but is still cutting out his own mistakes. Better to trade up for a proper well rounded right back rather than wait for Sanchez to progress to the level when he can reliably bail Trippier out.

Bruce appointed at Newcastle after all. Rondon sounds like he's off to Dalian and Perez has already gone to Leicester. Joselu has also left. I think that leaves Gayle as their only striker.

ShariVari, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:27 (four years ago) link

Great, a season of Bruce's earnest regretful whinging, "You don't like to be critical, they've got a hard job to do, but...". When I say 'season' I mean until he's sacked, of course.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:35 (four years ago) link

amazing stuff

imago, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:35 (four years ago) link

Tbf he's got an excellent track record in the Champo

jou're much too jung, girl (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:37 (four years ago) link

I think that leaves Gayle as their only striker.

Yoshinori Muto is still there iirc.

Bruce couldn't have happened to a nicer club tbf.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:46 (four years ago) link

My theory is that Bruce's championship record is inflated somewhat by him usually going where a decent amount of bunce is being chucked about and then leaving/getting sacked when it's gone. This pattern started when he fucked off the blades for tinpot Hudds just as we'd been bought out by a wealthy benefactor. I'll never believe he's even a half decent manager.

calzino, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:51 (four years ago) link

rondon already gone i thought
gayles going to stoke too isnt he?

nxd, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 09:54 (four years ago) link

as long as Rondon goes anywhere other than the Wolves i'm happy

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 12:39 (four years ago) link

He was really good last season but idk how much of that was down to the Jovic / Rebic / Haller partnership.

ShariVari, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 12:46 (four years ago) link

I know him from his spell at Utrecht, during which he was already impressive. Hate to see a quality player like that end up at WHU.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 12:52 (four years ago) link

They have made two good signings this summer and appear to be doing an anti-Newcastle which is disappointing behaviour from the Premier League's second best comedy club.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 12:54 (four years ago) link

tbf, Anderson / Diop / Yarmalenko was a good summer for them last year too.

ShariVari, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 13:25 (four years ago) link

I think people are being harsh on Steve Bruce. He'll have a good chunk of the summer to make his mark on the team, assess the gaps in the squad and then spend the entire transfer budget on Yannick Bolasie on deadline day or whatever

LOL I'd forgotten Bruce had been Sunderland manager. How many games do we think he'll last?

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 17:41 (four years ago) link

You're forgiven for forgetting that, as it's just one of the many, many reasons those poor toon fans are up in arms.

Wiki taught me chairman Mike Ashley - who wouldn't open his wallet if he had a gun to his head - "stated that he regretted buying Newcastle United, but admitted that he was "wedded" to the club." Lmao.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 17:45 (four years ago) link

Bruce will be there all season, or at least won't be fired until March when it's too late for his successor to do anything about it.

Great season to be a newly promoted club, Newcastle look doomed already and Brighton don't appear to be in great shape either.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:11 (four years ago) link

I hadn’t realised Llorente is out of contract. Fiorentina would probably be a good move for him.

It was tough to settle initially, there's a language and food barrier

Wolves U-23 Ed Francis on the alien food culture of, um, the Netherlands.

My initial point, sir, is that the cultural difference could hardly be described as a "barrier"

not til october anyways

It's gonna be really disappointing when he just turns up at PSG and his career completely fizzles out from there.

Matt DC, Sunday, 21 July 2019 10:12 (four years ago) link

i can see it as an utterly ruthless "its a lot better for me that you not be here" set of power moves.

beckham was iirc treated much the same by capello so obv at rm theres a cultural thing that possibly british players might be missing where the fuck-off-hints are expected to yield results far earlier in the process and tetchiness ensues

phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Sunday, 21 July 2019 10:30 (four years ago) link

Did the same with mcmanaman he ignored it as well and picked up another la Liga and champs lge before seeing out his contract iirc

Niche interest but as someone who watched an enormous amount of Australian football last season, for lack of anything better to do on a Saturday morning, it’s good to see Sarpreet Singh get picked up by Bayern Munich.

He’s one of the best passers of the ball in the league, albeit with next to no competition, but it’s difficult to judge how useful he would be to a decent team. It’ll be interesting to see how he develops in Germany over the next couple of years.

ShariVari, Monday, 22 July 2019 10:20 (four years ago) link

Biggest NZ transfer in history, surely? Had never heard of him before but am keen on seeing him play.
