It's funny how a lifetime of acting like a racist leads people to believe that you are a racist

brigadier pudding (DJP), Tuesday, 16 July 2019 23:13 (four years ago) link

Being blatantly racist in an era where racism is cool and wins elections and puts a racist president in the White House is one thing. But being forced to endure months of allegations of racism, that is truly something else. When will the world finally end the suffering of the racist white man being forced to endure these allegations?

I like Swalwell ignoring the parliamentarian (or whoever she was): fuck the House rules. There are no rules anymore.

Mazzy Tsar (PBKR), Tuesday, 16 July 2019 23:20 (four years ago) link

The House on Tuesday voted to formally admonish President Trump, approving a resolution condemning as “racist” his tweets targeting four minority congresswomen.

The 240-187 vote fell largely along partisan lines, as GOP leaders had rushed to the president’s defense in whipping against the measure.

Just four Republicans, Reps. Susan Brooks (Ind.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), William Hurd (Texas) and Fred Upton (Mich.), broke with party ranks to join every voting Democrat, revealing the extent to which Trump’s incendiary remarks had jarred Capitol Hill and forced even some of his closest allies to denounce his behavior.

Your helping of schadenfreude, featuring Tennessee's disgraced speaker of the house. Money quote:

"Due to his advanced age and the circumstances of his unemployment, it is highly unlikely that Mr. Casada will be able to secure comparable employment."

In 2009, Casada was one of the plaintiffs in a lawsuit in federal court, Captain Pamela Barnett v. Barack Hussein Obama, which claimed that Barack Obama was not an American citizen and therefore ineligible to be President of the United States. Judge David O. Carter ruled that Casada and other state legislators did not have standing to sue, since the supposed harm they feared was "highly speculative and conjectural."[4]

Chris Cuomo's generally unbearable, and I don't watch him often, but I had CNN on for most of yesterday. This was kind of amazing. You throw the softball question out there to presumably set the interviewee up a for second question, but the second question, whatever it was, becomes unnecessary.

It struck me as I was waking up this morning that one potentially (potentially) effective line of attack is to paint these overtly xenophobic positions and policies as expressions of cowardice. It feels like it could land both because it's true and because there's a fair amount of overlap between bigotry and the importance of appearing RUFF + TUFF. There's obviously a lot more insidious complexity involved in the act of othering, but it occurs to me that proponents of diversity (or let's just use the shorthand of 'dems' in this particular instance) could benefit from consistently framing these turds as a gaggle of nervous nellies who create boogiemen from whole cloth because they can't handle the relatively harmless reality of increasing multicultralism.

I think the way Cuomo hammered him was very effective. Obviously Kobach himself is a racist shitbag, but it's good to press him on this and call him out when he doesn't have an immediate clear response.

“You know, they talk about people of color. I’m a person of color,” Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) told Vice News reporter Daniel Newhauser Tuesday as they discussed Trump telling the four congresswomen — Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) — to go back to their home countries, even though all four are U.S. citizens and three were born in the U.S.

“I’m white. I’m an Anglo Saxon. People say things all the time, but I don’t get offended,” he said.

“Has anybody ever told you to go back to your country?” Newhauser asked.

“Yeah they have actually. With a name like Mike Kelly you can’t be from any place else but Ireland.’”

so, according to DOJ policies, a sitting president can't be indicted

and according to Mueller's logic in his report, he can't recommend charging a sitting president for a crime, because doing so would be unfair to the president because they wouldn't have a chance to defend themselves in a court of law (because they can't be indicted). (99.959345204% of people in this dim country do not understand this)

and also, according to some rule of decorum in the house of representatives, no one can say that the president is racist, either directly or by citing others who have done so, or by pointing out that something the president said is literally the textbook definition of racism.

finally, trump is the most unfairly treated president in history
