She ditched the album after being blown away by the ILM pre-cover version.

Great. Cause everyone was wondering.

Cousin Slappy, Monday, 19 August 2019 05:10 (four years ago) link

I almost never think about Grimes and I'm not really a fan, but the other day "Kill V. Maim" came on in a mix and it struck me as very emblematic of its time. I would definitely put it on an end-of-decade mix.

I've always looked at music criticism, reviews, message boards, etc. as a way of finding and rediscovering music without giving any weight at all to the opinions behind the writing. I kinda sift through the opinions for keywords or phrases that are suited to my taste or warn me that I probably won't be into the music being discussed. The idea that someone can interpret a song, or any art for that matter, and bludgeon everyone else with that interpretation seems pretty dickish.

That said, I hope Grimes isn't dissected into oblivion by fans and critics alike. She's so damn likable, but even better than that she has interesting songs and you can actually dance to some of them. The ideas behind them are what stick out for me.

wow seriously homie what horrible thing did she say to you when you found out her address through a shady private detective and showed up at her front door with flowers and a handgun

I think bringing Comedy Bang-Bang into this is just what this album cycle needed.

on a tangential note, should I check out Nicole Dollanganger’s music and catch her live show? noticed she’s playing her locally pretty soon and I know Grimes has boosted her

untuned mass damper (mh), Monday, 19 August 2019 16:58 (four years ago) link

xpost

It's not her I have an issue with at all. We actually share a ton in common, especially when it comes to dating and being openly hypocritical. It's her disugsting fans that make my skin crawl. The way you guys infantalize this grown woman is an assault on my senses. Grimes is a-ok in my book.

Cousin Slappy, Monday, 19 August 2019 17:35 (four years ago) link

no it clearly is her you have an issue with

Relistened to art angels recently and was reminded Grimes fucking owns and I don’t care what dumb shit she says in interviews or which colossal idiot she dates. We Appreciate Power is great too

Definitely. wheres the single

Simon H., Thursday, 5 September 2019 04:22 (four years ago) link

it's out in 2 and a half hours here: https://youtu.be/M9SGYBHY0qs

also is a collaboration with i_o who seems to be some edm guy i've never heard of?

ufo, Thursday, 5 September 2019 04:26 (four years ago) link

we’ve still got a couple hours until west coast midnight!

untuned mass damper (mh), Thursday, 5 September 2019 04:27 (four years ago) link

So... video is cool, that neoclassical aesthetic is overdone at this point but I’ll always love it. It’s sprinkled with some k-pop vibe which fits her I suppose.

Production is good but the “i like it like that” is mixed in a way that stands out too much and it’s kind of jarring, it’s a stupid hook too but it’s catchy. It’s weird that the more she improves her production techniques, the more generic she sounds to me.

The common link between We appreciate power and this one is the chorus overstays its welcome, it’s repeated until it feels drilled into your brain. I don’t remember her previous chorus being as repetitive as these past two, or maybe there were more ideas thrown in that made me not notice it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 5 September 2019 07:20 (four years ago) link

I kinda liked WAP but this seems to be not good.

Simon H., Thursday, 5 September 2019 07:34 (four years ago) link

Both 'We Appreciate Power' and this are more palatable to my ears than 90% of Art Angels, so a modicum of cautious optimism is in order. I do agree with Moka that the choruses are insolently repetitive but that was already true of 'Oblivion', wasn't it?

pomenitul, Thursday, 5 September 2019 08:25 (four years ago) link

it's ok but mostly leaves me feeling like she can do a lot better. the vocal melody is nice enough but her vocals are even more indistinct than usual and don't seem to quite fit with the backing track which is very bland and anonymous (blaming i_o for this), so there's not a lot to actually grab onto. if this track were on art angels (songwriting-wise it would have been right at home, it's just the production lets it down) it would have been much more densely packed with hooks

ufo, Thursday, 5 September 2019 08:47 (four years ago) link

i guess a positive is i can barely make out anything she's saying so i have no idea if the lyrics are as silly as "we appreciate power"

ufo, Thursday, 5 September 2019 08:54 (four years ago) link

It’s weird that the more she improves her production techniques, the more generic she sounds to me.

^ this!

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 5 September 2019 09:21 (four years ago) link

Nothing weird about it tbh.

pomenitul, Thursday, 5 September 2019 09:29 (four years ago) link

I haven't listened to Art Angels in a while, but on first listen one of the melodies feels lifted from one of those songs.

☮ (peace, man), Thursday, 5 September 2019 11:49 (four years ago) link

i think it's just a very typically grimes melody, the sort that was all over art angels. that's not a bad thing at all, i just wish the backing was better (and i'm largely blaming her choice of collaborator, i_o, for this since his solo work sounds very similarly bland from the little i listened)

ufo, Thursday, 5 September 2019 12:00 (four years ago) link

improving production at the cost of distinctiveness is a story as old as production itself

this all has a certain “jokers trick” aspect to it ...

ufo, Thursday, 5 September 2019 13:40 (four years ago) link

tangentially, I did end up seeing the Grimes-boosted Nicole Dollanganger last week and it was a pretty good show!

untuned mass damper (mh), Thursday, 5 September 2019 14:04 (four years ago) link

this is decent but definitely more in the realm of grimes music that poppy et al. have moved into while she was between albums, and thus sounds less exciting

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Thursday, 5 September 2019 14:22 (four years ago) link

I mean it's weird because supposedly the more you master something the more 'freely' you can push the limit of your knowledge. I mean Picasso had to learn and master how to paint properly first before he evolved it into his own style. According to her Visions was created in Garageband in a week since she couldn't leave her home due to a fever. Even with the rushed job and some of the presets she used it probably is her most creative and unique sounding album.

That said, I didn't know who i_o was or that he was a co-producer in this one, and apparently he is an edm producer which is a red flag in itself, so I'll also send blame of the genericness of this one his way. Is there a genre more generic than EDM in the past decade? I think that might be one of the few genres where it's extremely difficult to tell an artists production work one from another.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 5 September 2019 16:12 (four years ago) link

it's also the difference between working on an album for 2 weeks and working on an album for 2 years

flappy bird, Thursday, 5 September 2019 16:28 (four years ago) link

But also every producer knows that you get the most interesting results out of a piece of gear the first time you use it, when you're exciting and don't really know what you're doing yet.

usually yes

flappy bird, Thursday, 5 September 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

(exciting -> excited)

Also creating without the expectation of an audience vs the knowledge of a huge audience, and the usual curve of your technical expertise and experience going up while the number of good ideas that are most 'you' go down/get used up, etc.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 5 September 2019 16:54 (four years ago) link

Yes those are good points. There’s a lot of pressure on her in this album’s cycle that wasn’t there before and there have been several signs, like behind the curtain drama with her label and the constant re-scheduling.
