Damn it, I'm going to have "Komm, süsser Tod" stuck in my head for days.

As a lifelong committed melancholic I’m disappointed I only just watched this for the first time. And yeah “Komm, susser Tod” was great and I’ve cued it up on YouTube a bunch.

can anyone recommend any particularly good writing/podcasts or anything about this?

ryan, Saturday, 13 July 2019 01:52 (four years ago) link

christ, i watched the last 4 episodes of the show plus the end of evangelion yesterday afternoon and maybe vaping mids throughout did not help but boy do i not know what to make of that ending

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Monday, 22 July 2019 16:14 (four years ago) link

Well, the Chamber of Guf opened, and Adam and Lilith were there, and uh...

jmm, Monday, 22 July 2019 16:37 (four years ago) link

the union of the original angels adam and lilith triggers the third impact aka the human instrumentality project. gendo had adam embedded in his hand, and rei was made from lilith's dna; this would've theoretically allowed gendo to control the course of the third impact so he could be reunited with yui. of course, what ends up happening is rei rejects gendo bc he sucks ass and instead unites with shinji and unit 01. the world ends and everyone sees the person they love the most before they turn into goo/lcl and are joined with the universal consciousness in the black moon cradled by rei, who at this point, being gigantic and having a thousand wings, is basically lilith. shinji falls through the dreamscape of his own unconscious, as documented in episodes 25 and 26 and in the second half of end of evangelion, the result of which is that he decides that even though existing as a human being isolated from the universal consciousness is extremely painful and full of misunderstanding and loneliness, he loved everybody so much he wanted to see them again (this decision also likely hinges on the conclusion of episode 26, where shinji realizes he's capable of loving himself)

basically

clouds, Monday, 22 July 2019 16:55 (four years ago) link

basically the end of evangelion is shinji's mom giving him a big existential hug

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 22 July 2019 16:59 (four years ago) link

the show ends with him being like "i love everyone" and then the end of evangelion ends with him choking asuka on the shore of a hellscape beach of an lcl sea which i found a little jarring

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Monday, 22 July 2019 17:03 (four years ago) link

altho thank you for that post with the plot rundown it's very succinct, don't know how i would've gone about trying to summarize that ending

pobody's nerfect

actually: i think shinji's separation from the mass of human consciousness was traumatic, all that isolation came rushing back at him, like being born again. that his violence is met with care and concern instead of hostility reduces him to tears. and then asuka's all "kimochi warui" about it. the ending is v ambiguous and hard to read tbh, i don't blame you

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 22 July 2019 17:07 (four years ago) link

gendo had adam embedded in his hand

I had to read up on a lot of the literal plot details afterwards, and had completely missed this. The moment where Rei absorbs Adam is also kind of awkward and obscure. Fortunately, I don't think the precise lore is really essential to see what's happening to Shinji.

jmm, Monday, 22 July 2019 17:14 (four years ago) link

man End of Evangelion is a good-ass movie

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Monday, 22 July 2019 17:14 (four years ago) link

it's the greatest animated movie ever made

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 22 July 2019 17:15 (four years ago) link

The moment where Rei absorbs Adam is also kind of awkward and obscure

there's a lot of stuff in end of eva that occurs so quickly only a few frames of animation are expended on it. one of these is rei stealing gendo's entire arm. another is: if you watch asuka's "i don't want to die" scene very slowly, you'll see she has a pretty vivid vision of her own eyeless corpse full of maggots

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 22 July 2019 17:17 (four years ago) link

I'm glad someone else asked what was going on, makes me feel less stupid.

But what's with seminal anime and their oblique/opaque storytelling? I read a synopsis on FLCL and it had a surprisingly coherent plot.

Coelacanth Green (Leee), Monday, 22 July 2019 17:22 (four years ago) link

i have no idea but i love it. flcl's plot is so straightforward lol

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 22 July 2019 17:25 (four years ago) link

btw i'm glad more people have seen end of evangelion, the movie that confirms that asuka is the best character in the show

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 22 July 2019 17:26 (four years ago) link

my fave character is misato i think

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Monday, 22 July 2019 18:35 (four years ago) link

rebuild of evangelion any good?

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Monday, 22 July 2019 19:28 (four years ago) link

yes! the first movie is almost indistinguishable from the first six episodes of the show but the other two movies get real wild, especially 3.0. however one of the more disappointing aspects of the rebuilds is that the fan service is even more obnoxious and gross than it is in the series, though this problem is also pretty isolated to 2.0

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 22 July 2019 19:48 (four years ago) link

I looked up a watch order to try to figure out whether I needed to see Evangelion Death (True)2, and a random blog suggested watching the series through ep 24, then End of Evangelion, then returning to the series and watching 25-26. I just finished ep 23, so I could do that--should I?

rob, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 14:38 (four years ago) link

I'd suggest finishing the series first, then watching EoE. That's the order in which they were originally produced. That blog was probably suggesting doing it the other way around with the idea that it might make more narrative sense, but I think it's more interesting to stick to the actual history.

I haven't watched Death (True)2, but my understanding is that it's entirely redundant once you've seen the series and film.

jmm, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 14:44 (four years ago) link

yeah watch 25-26 first. eoe is way more cathartic after

you do not need to watch death unless you’d like to see a few of the scenes from the series with better animation and the four children performing as a string quartet

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 14:46 (four years ago) link

death used to have a few scenes that were exclusive to it (gendo and fuyutski’s conversation over the second impact footage) but they were since incorporated into the director’s cuts of episodes 22-24

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 14:48 (four years ago) link

the sequencing is different (partially chronologically partially segmented by character) & the tug of the editing adds to the experiencing of rewatching eoe afterwards imo

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 14:49 (four years ago) link

but first go yeah just do the series & eoe

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 14:50 (four years ago) link

thank you all! tbh I'm not sure why I'm fretting over this as I already feel like I just need to rewatch the whole thing pretty soon lol

rob, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 14:54 (four years ago) link

Netflix has these director's cuts?

maffew12, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 15:11 (four years ago) link

the director's cuts are the only versions of those episodes available on netflix yes

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 15:11 (four years ago) link

string quartet though.... hmmm

Thanks ^^

Anno published a lengthy article yesterday about the clusterfuck that is Gainax
most pertinent to this thread: Gainax got into such financial difficulty that childhood friend & Gainax president Yamaga asked Anno for a 100 million yen loan in 2014, Anno gave him it interest free & with no conditions in exchange for all Eva rights (which probably explains the Netflix deal). Yamaga then started ghosting Anno over the loan repayments, sold off properties like Gunbuster without telling Anno, created shell companies, sold off production materials etc. Anno eventually sued them.

one month passes...

I am rewatching Evangelion bcz i'm showing it to my friend for the first time and he is so hooked, there's a bunch of stuff I'm noticing that I either forgot or didn't notice before, I can't wait to watch EoE and then the Rebuilds (which I've seen once before)

**REBUILD MOVIE SPOILERS**
do we all support the theory that the rebuilds are part of a time loop?

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 17 February 2020 20:16 (four years ago) link

the rebuild movies are obviously set in the remade post-end of eva world to me but that might as well be a time loop

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 17 February 2020 20:37 (four years ago) link

the final rebuild movie is coming out the day after my birthday this year :D
