I posted a while ago, originally as fat-latvian and then as recspecs81. I was told that I was accepted but then got no email at either of those email addresses.

Hahaha, how am I jealous. Search my username on Oink and youll find that I am already a part of Oink. Needless to say, it is no wonder that so many "accepted" people post here again about not receiving emails with invites. All of the "success" stories are the oink admin logging in as different users.

4) While I can certainly appreciate the output of put I have to say that Sufjan takes it. First of all I feel like his voice is much more palateable and his lyrics are much better. First of all they actually have a universal meaning and story-telling quality and paint aural pictures rather than just spouting random weird lyrics. Second of all, he is such a master of orchestration and his arrangements and melodies are so concise and comforting as well as classic. A lot of his stuff is like a folky pet sounds or beatles type thing which I have always liked. Finally, he plays so many instruments himself. Playing nearly all instruments on the album himself and coming up with unique production and recording techniques is the true sign of an artist and has and will serve him for the duration of his career. While deerhoof have done some interesting things with rock and a new-prog type thing they just arent as proven or precise or anything as Stevens...come on now.

Rockism recognizes the music there is in humanity, and our ability to produce it. There is a very strong connection between our primitive nature and music, so much so that it flows out of humans from the rythm in their bones and each breath that is taken. In its simplist form is the enjoyment of music for music's sake. It is an ideal that seeks to explain how music and its production play a critical role in our everyday lives, so much that it actually causes people to physically move. When given the oppertunity to take the time to recognize the intimate and complex connections between the producer of music, the sound itself, and those who interprate the music, one should be humbled in the face of rythm. Depending on one's position on their journey of discovering themselves in relation to the sounds they hear, different revelations occur which cause indivuals to seek and discover different genres and find what they enjoy. No one type of music should be criticized, for one man's trash is another's treasure. I can admit as a child I once loved N'Sync and Brittany Spears, without whom, I would not have had the foundation which brought me to my understanding of music today, which my libriary is mostly compsed of the illest jam bands. Although I do not particulary care for these artists now, and cannot beleive how agregious the effects pop culture has had on America, I will by no means dismiss what they have to offer because in and of its self is a piece that will have some impact on those who are exposed to it, for better or worse. We can only thank those who produce and share thier music with pure intentions and postive messages which no one can disagree with, like Bob Marley, Michael Franti and Spearhead. These are the artists whose messages transcend all biases, and seek to unite the world's diverse population as one race of humans. Power to the Peaceful.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

Due to the influential nature of both Sufjan and Deerhoof, as well as their divergent backgrounds, and ways in which people are influenced by the music, I find it hard to choose who is better. It is hard to conclude from my juxtaposition of the artists, whom I am really not that familair with. From what I have gathered, they both have different impacts on their audiences and preform in a completely different manner from eachother. For example Sufjan Stevens applies more of a structured folk approach characterized and enriched with his ability to preform instrumentally and lyrically, while Deerhoof is unconventional and seemingly odd music may not make alot of sense to those who do not seek for a deeper meaning. Infact, instead of hearing lyrical metaphors that are more likley to come from Sufjan, Deerhoofs whole songs could be metaphors in and if themselves waiting for one to discover the actual deeper meaning in irreverent musical practices.

2) rockism? British term that refers to the level of authenticity in popular (pop) music. It is a purist movement which believes that at one point music has reached its pureststate of expression. All subsecuent styles of music and technologies used to produce these styles will have resulted in a loss of authenticity, and that some kinds of new musical expression are nothing more than merchandising.
Rockism critics observe the following ideas: The use of synthesizers or other such digital media instruments are questioned for their authenticity, as they would tend to give the music a prefabricated feeling. Composer and Songwriting skills are taken into account as indicative of the quality of the musical production process. "Design" of the product is taken into account, i.e., it is more a merchandising product, or is it a unique creative expression.
Rockism critics are searching, as all critics do, for a certain purification or reduction of judgement to one single line of thought (western science teaches there must be only one origin to one thing). Problems with this or any kind of criticism arise when the reader or the critic him/herself questions the authenticity of his/her OWN judgement, that is, how does one conclude that one's own judgement is in fact authentic, and not biased or inadvertantly influenced by another idea (on whose judgement can we decide what is good music and what is not, what is authentic and what is not). The purity then, of "rockism" critiques would the be tainted, and lose value as a "dependable" source of criticism. 4) Sufjan Stevens. It is like being asked to choose between apples and pears. Maybe the taste would be similar to some, but completely different to others. However, I would dare to state, trivial it may sound, that its not that Sufjan Stevens is better or worse, similar or dissimilar than Deerhoof, but simply different. Sufjan Stevens is different in a way that appeals to my particular sense of aesthetics. I do not dislike the clear musical influences that result in Deerhoofs eclectic style, but those of Sufjan Stevens evoke in me, because of the time and place that i was raised in, and my subsecuent choice in musical consumption. That being said, Sufjan Stevens style of expression, as per my taste, is a pleasantly surprising exprimentation in form and content of both musical structure/style, and creative expression in lyrics. I would not dare to make a comparison between the two, but only state that that afect that Sufjan's style has on me as an individual is that of contemplation and serenity and introspection and curiosity to hear what more he can think of. That in a nutshell, is great music to me, and that is what i search for in Sufjan Stevens music. It is quite an experience, and to find out whether or not another individual would agree to it, demands direct and personal experience.
