Huh. I thought it was just something that rhymed with "Rapper." I was a big fan of "Romancing the Stone" when I was a kid, and the bad guy in that movie has an alligator pit, and he's aways saying "look at those snappers!"

They could have named him Chief Teef

lmao at the contributors

So far, this is not good...

Frederik B, Friday, 26 July 2019 17:52 (four years ago) link

I really want to like this cause I'm getting bored w/ unambitious 30-minute rap records but uhhh

Simon H., Friday, 26 July 2019 17:59 (four years ago) link

it feels mean to dislike this cause it's so good-natured and warmly arranged but at this point I guess I should just accept this is Not My Thing

Simon H., Friday, 26 July 2019 18:07 (four years ago) link

I will conclude my remarks by saying "Roo" is quite nice

Simon H., Friday, 26 July 2019 18:10 (four years ago) link

i did not love roo, but a few other tracks have been pretty good. i'm sure whatever playlist i make of this album will be good, but not at the level of the last two.

just got to the randy newman collab and uh...

lion king 2: the gift and the curse (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 July 2019 18:30 (four years ago) link

I like 5 Year Plan, but generally this is not corny enough :(

Frederik B, Friday, 26 July 2019 18:30 (four years ago) link

the outro isn't bad, but the middle section grates like crazy

lion king 2: the gift and the curse (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 July 2019 18:33 (four years ago) link

Is this as bad as they make it out to be? Loved Acid Rap and Coloring Book but the comments I’ve read on this one are not positive at all.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 27 July 2019 16:41 (four years ago) link

it's not horrible, and I did find the more palatable material crops up later on. it's just a lot of his thing to deal with in one sitting

Simon H., Saturday, 27 July 2019 16:56 (four years ago) link

It’s definitely not bad, but the first two tracks leave a bad taste that lingered. I’m definitely not allergic to his sentimental stuff (Same Drugs was either my fav or second fav CB track), and I think the album as a whole will make more sense in a live setting, but I definitely think it’s a step down.

lion king 2: the gift and the curse (voodoo chili), Saturday, 27 July 2019 18:20 (four years ago) link

It's backloaded, yeah, but it's a step down. Nothing as good as Same Drugs, Summertime Friends or Sunday Candy. The productions are too boring.

Frederik B, Saturday, 27 July 2019 18:32 (four years ago) link

Def Chance’s New Jersey but still good

Hannah GAPDY (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 27 July 2019 18:41 (four years ago) link

this is pretty underwhelming, i like chance's sound so it's still generally pleasant and the production is very lush but the hooks aren't there compared to his previous work and it's pretty forgettable overall. absolutely does not need to be nearly 80 minutes either, but barely anything does. maybe there's a good album in it with half the tracks removed idk

ufo, Monday, 29 July 2019 07:53 (four years ago) link

I think the general reception to this is already too negative to even qualify as a New Jersey.

Definitely cool that a white Twitch streamer with this as his avatar is dunking on a black man for being happy.

I love Chance. The tweet is still funny

Number None, Monday, 29 July 2019 16:44 (four years ago) link

the backlash to it is somewhat understandable especially since chance is kinda corny in general and that grates with me sometimes even though i'm generally a fan, but still seems quite excessive - it's not a bad terrible album just bloated and a bit underwhelming. after listening to it more there's definitely a pretty good album hidden in there, like "all day long", "found a good one", and "zanies and fools" are all excellent among others and it's generally a pleasant listen just too long

ufo, Monday, 29 July 2019 16:56 (four years ago) link

man, I think I have strong differences in opinion about comedy with anyone who found that tweet funny.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 29 July 2019 17:04 (four years ago) link

the tweet's as funny as that song is good imo, ie. not.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 29 July 2019 17:13 (four years ago) link

this album is not very listenable for me

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 29 July 2019 17:26 (four years ago) link

Album is very good. Criticism is bizarre

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 29 July 2019 21:25 (four years ago) link

Clearly a better album than coloring book imo

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 29 July 2019 21:25 (four years ago) link

this album is good ... for me to poop on

pretty funny how quickly ilx falls to the consensus pressure

this a blast what are yall (naysayers) listening to?

big city slam (Spottie), Monday, 29 July 2019 23:42 (four years ago) link

It’s mostly good, just long. I’m gonna try to listen again and start with Eternal.

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Monday, 29 July 2019 23:51 (four years ago) link

haven't listened to this yet, but definitely felt in the Twitter air that the knives were going to the out for Chance

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 July 2019 23:56 (four years ago) link

i think the production feels generally more polished than coloring book but the average track quality is a bit of a step down, even though coloring book has "blessings" and "how great" which are too much for me

ufo, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 00:09 (four years ago) link

The twitter response has definitely felt like a pile-on, disproportionate to the album quality. It’s been kinda hip to hate on chance since that “ol happy ass” tweet

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 00:28 (four years ago) link

... yeah, the negative reaction to this record is outrageous

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 02:41 (four years ago) link

"i got you" is phenomenal let me hear it at a roller rink

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 02:43 (four years ago) link

man, i dunno anything about twitter response or pitchfork or whatever everyone else is saying; I just know I listened through this about three or four times and there's a lot more bad than good. I like Hot Shower, We Go High, Big Fish. Not sure I wanna go back to mine for more.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 03:30 (four years ago) link

i haven't had the opportunity to really dig into this album yet but in listening to it a few times i feel like the memes have really led the conversation here. everyone loved the ol happy ass tweet and now every review basically just says "ol happy ass." (this raises the question of music criticism's function when it makes the same point as a meme but in 1,500 more words, but that's a discussion for another thread.) i guess you could say that the ol happy ass tweet (to be general obv) crystalized feelings about chance instead of drove them but my problem w/ the discussion around this album is that it feels like it's just picked up from where it left off without actually engaging much w/ the album. it's hard for me to imagine the theoretical album that would've shifted the conversation on him... so i also don't think this album, which sounds kinda dope to me, is getting a fair shake

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 July 2019 03:39 (four years ago) link

he def didn't help himself by turning "they go low we go high" into a chorus i will say that

great review whiney

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 03:48 (four years ago) link

it's true it is great

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 July 2019 03:56 (four years ago) link

there's def some stuff on here that doesn't really work -- the song that sounds like vampire weekend for instance -- but in the context of the scale and ambition of the album (the thread of musical omnivorousness as whiney points out) i don't really mind them so much

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 July 2019 04:05 (four years ago) link

Thanks guys!

The omniverousness works for me in a way that it doesn’t with, say, Cudi because there’s still this Chance way of rapping that basically stays the same from track-to-track. It’s not like “this is my rock song” (yells) it’s mostly like “what if I was Chance over a rock song”

Anyway, the title track has been in and out of my head all day...
