Can you just check it's not happening on all stylesheets -- does old.css work, for instance?

not a problem in old.css

Hey y'all, I'm noticing a thing lately where if a url is posted with a closed parenthesis at the end, that closed parenthesis shows up in the post as plain text rather than as part of the url, which leads to an error when you click the (now incorrect) link. Like so:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Downey_(comedian)

NBD, just thought you should know.

That has been happening since forever.

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 18 September 2019 18:24 (four years ago) link

Which, as anyone familiar with my observational skills can tell you, in no way contradicts my having just now noticed it.

Welcome To My Lifemare (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 18 September 2019 18:28 (four years ago) link

if you feel fancy you can replace the ) at the end with %29 when you post a link

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 18 September 2019 18:30 (four years ago) link

ty, I will employ that when fanciness next overtakes me.

Welcome To My Lifemare (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 18 September 2019 18:36 (four years ago) link

I agree - or not, since you said it was NBD - it is mildly bothersome, btw, but I don't know how often it happens the other way round, i.e. someone actually posts a parenthesis-less link inside parentheses and doesn't leave a space

theoretically the link finder could check whether the opening bracket is after the http or before but if we try to make it aware of all possibilities we'll bring SkyNet online before we know it

(I may try this line next time my boss asks for something I don't want to do)

ever since twitter changed their site, links through to twitter posts on desktop - i.e. when images are off and you want to click through to see the tweet - usually result in a 'something went wrong' page on twitter, which stays that way even if you hack the referrer string off the URL! copying and pasting the tweet URL without the referrer string into a new browser window works. odd. i'm on Opera on a Mac.

This is definitely Twitter. I think they’re trying to do something smart and failing

I assumed they are just mad that i'm not on twitter.

The parentheses bug is a more general message board code issue, I think? Or at least I've seen it happen on other boards too that use BBCode.

Ffm, I think you meant (((Jesus

I will quit my job (programming, where we respect parenthesis symmetry) for this cause. )))

yo, why do posts at top of long threads not load anymore? is this an intentional design decision or a bug? because it's very bad (imho)

if it's intentional can we at least get an option to toggle off?

thx,
-flopson

flopson, Friday, 8 November 2019 20:03 (four years ago) link

Definitely not intentional. Got a link to an example thread please?

I just tried to flag a really old post (mostly for comedy purposes; in what universe Seal indefensible? c'mon man) and got a stack trace:

Feel free to delete if you don't want stack traces publicly posted on the site; was mostly wondering if this is a known issue tied to old data, indication that something is screwy with my authentication, or an actual problem.

ok,

love* in the time of plague (and by love* i mean brexit* and other dreary matters of uk politics)

that image shows as a broken link to me. it's a convoluted fbcdn url, but i've seen the same thing with twitter images. the broken link isn't the problem though. when i right click and view image i can see the image fine, but then i can't get back to the original page - the back button is greyed out, the back on the context menu is greyed out. why would that be?

(firefox, mac)

koogs, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 09:00 (three years ago) link

(ah, ok, right click, then middle click on 'view image' opens it in a new tab, which is missing as an option in the menu in firefox)

neither of these are big deals but just since they crossed me mind:

can we embed youtube links that look like the urls you get when you click share, i.e. https://youtu.be/TuP86rfnR3A ?

and can we rewrite youtube embed urls to youtube-nocookie.com per https://dri.es/how-to-remove-youtube-tracking?

vote against the first - it's very handy to be able to select and post Belgium links when you don't want to embed, rather than have to type open square bracket you are ell equals paste url close square bracket paste url again open square bracket backslash you are ell close square bracket

Something odd might be happening - at the moment, the 'second thoughts' thread has an answer from 37 minutes ago - but it doesn't show up on ILE's New Answer page at all, the most recent thread there is from 59 minutes ago. Is it cutting off the very top entry?
