Seems to run pretty good on my average PC. Probably looks a little better than the 360 version. I don't really like any of the additional filters though - they're just distracting.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 15 June 2009 01:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks for the heads up. I got about 45 fps in 720p resolution (they gave me a C-rank :/), so I guess I just barely made it under the gun for this... fortunately I can turn off various effects to get it to 60, if I have to, for online play.

I kind of like the ink and watercolor filters, and fortunately they don't actually add more than a 1-2 FPS performance hit.

Nhex, Monday, 15 June 2009 07:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Supposedly the main effects that hurt performance are the particle effects, so I just turned that off. Also turning off the AA took my score from a C to an A (running at 1600 x 900). I would monkey with it more, but I'm not even planning to buy the PC version, unless my 360 conks out or there is an amazing sale, or if the online performance is considerable improved somehow (which I doubt).

are you still playing much, jeff?

cozwn, Monday, 15 June 2009 18:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Not so much lately (been distracted by other games I wanted to try out), but I do feel like it's a game I still could be playing years from now. I'm in a bit of a weird place with IV, because I know I need to put in more time, practice more and get better at combos if I really want to compete in championship mode, yet I'm decent enough to consistently beat the casual players still playing ranked. Because there doesn't seem to be any kind of true skill matchmaking going on, if I play online there just isn't that consistent quality of matches. Like 1/3 of all games I could win with my eyes closed, 1/3 of all games I have no chance to win, and the final 1/3 of games are pretty good matches (and could go either way). It makes for some not completely satisfying sessions and I don't know what the answer is.

It's hard to find the time to put in to try to take my game to the next level, especially with the releases of BlazBlue, KoF XII and Marvel vs Capcom 2 so imminent. Also the sinking feeling that Super Street Fighter II Turbo is still a superior game and where I should be applying my fighting game energy.

Is there a cheaper but still pretty good stick to get? is it possible to repurpose an old sega joystick or something?

The only one I know of is the Mayflash USB stick (around $40-50 + shipping), but people seem to be buying it for modding purposes (the shell only, basically) since apparently the stock parts wear out or go bad pretty quickly.

I don't know what is going on with this game, but it seems to have been over-run with even more Kens than ever before. That said, I did fight an Abel tonight in a final of a championship who was truly overwhelming (maybe not surpising when he had 14,000 point to my 2,800). Even though he kicked my ass worse than it has been kicked in a long while, it was the bst experience I had in game in a long time, just seeing somebody playing somebody different and better than I'd ever seen Abel played before.

But the last few times I've turned on the game, it really has been 70% Kens, 20% Ryus and 10% other characters (if that), which is really starting to sour the experience. I do understand the ease of playing Ryu or Ken, and the advantages they have, but it's boring. It also makes it harder when you do come across somebody playing something different, because you're just not getting the experience against them (for instance, in the 1,000+ games I've played I've fought Rufus three times, at the most). If they would add a mode where you don't get to select your own character and always get a random character to play, I think I'd jump in that mode, even though it would mean having to spend more time in the practice room on the characters I've rarely played myself). As it is, I'm glad there are some other new fighting games coming along shortly that I can move over to, I hope, as I'm feeling more and more like I've had my fill of SFIV :(

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:09 (fourteen years ago) link

ken is crap, I don't know why people pick him

he's seriously bad; I'd say he's the third worst character in the game behind vega and guile

ryu is the best character in the game imo

cozwn, Sunday, 21 June 2009 11:53 (fourteen years ago) link

play me jeff and I'll play only rufus :D

cozwn, Sunday, 21 June 2009 11:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Do you say Ken is crap compared to Ryu because of his super/ultra is so vertical and easy to predict? I think it's his normal game that people like (which is basically the same as Ryu's?). He has a good cross-up and range game and if people jump in srk. I think people pick him because they are lazy. His moves are easy to do and familiar and relatively easy to combo (only Ryu is easier, but maybe he gets picked less because people feel he is too familiar?). As mainly a Balrog player, playing Ryu/Ken is aggravating because I find I have to play more defensively than I like, but if you don't turtle against those guys, you kind of don't have a chance. Sagat still is an extremely difficult match-up, but I very very rarely run into him anymore. I know I don't really like playing as him too much because he seems kind of slow and for some reason my brain gets stuck on the two kinds of tiger shots - he's maybe just a little too complicated for me.

Cozwn - that 9 hour time difference = seems like we're never on at the same time + potential lag fest, but I'm definitely up for some casuals whenever. That's really all I wish I was playing, but either my friends never seem to be on when I'm on, or they don't play or they're horrible and only play Ryu.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 21 June 2009 17:09 (fourteen years ago) link

ken is crap because his ultra is hard to land, his fireball is rubbish, his godly poke (fwd+medium kick) doesn't combo except on counter-hit and his only mix-ups come off his (game glitch) kara throw. it's an uphill battle trying to win with that dude at the highest level, I think, hence why one of america's top players dropped him for akuma and the japanese rate him the second worst char in the game (in front of guile). he has a good dp but nobody's going to jump into that just like you never see lp dp into ultra except when doofuses are playing (<= me). at low levels of play though, I can see the attraction: keep mashing his heavy dragon punch when people are close and you're likely to hit, and it is a hit for big damage and it looks good

I play a ton of ryu and he is so super solid in this game; balrog (no offence) I think is so popular amongst the top flight americans because he is super easy to pick up and his links are peasy. his saturation seems to have dropped off a lot now people are realising his limitations. amazingly we're only now beginning to see half decent american sagats cos sagats high damage options (other than his stupid standing heavy kick juggles) all come off quite tight links. they're still nowhere near as gd as jp sagats obv

cozwn, Sunday, 21 June 2009 17:37 (fourteen years ago) link

ken doesn't have enough knockdowns either, his hurricane kick (normal and ex) don't (I think). does his ex fireball?

cozwn, Sunday, 21 June 2009 17:39 (fourteen years ago) link

have you (or anyone) ever played a half decent seth? he makes this game the most unfun game in the world imo. so boring chasing him round the screen

also I love how zangief is so strong in this game and basically wrecks a large portion of the cast but will never win a tournament cos sagat completely owns him

cozwn, Sunday, 21 June 2009 23:20 (fourteen years ago) link

My experiences with SFIV are getting very inconsistent. After yesterday's complaints and frustrations, today I played about ten matches and didn't face a single Ken or Ryu and even came across a Rufus (who I beat woohoo). Made it to a championship final against a Zangief - a character I feel like I haven't fought in months. Even though the guy was nothing special, he won the game pretty easily just cause my spacing was completely horrible. Also not a great match-up for Balrog in my experience, as the only Balrog options (that I know of) are perfectly spaced pokes and constant headbutts. Overall though, it was a set of matches that reminded me this can still be a damn fun game too.

Never played a decent Seth. In fact, I can only remember facing a Seth once. He's such a pain to unlock, I doubt very many people have even bothered. I haven't even been able to unlock Gouken yet, though I've only recently started trying.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 22 June 2009 03:23 (fourteen years ago) link

czn - did you see the Devastation finals yet? What did you think of Wong giving up on your guy Rufus and switching to Abel for the final match?

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 22 June 2009 03:27 (fourteen years ago) link

justin said after he got raped by daigo tht he never picks rufus against ryu cos the match is heavily skewed in favour of ryu. john choi had only played 1 month of serious sfiv and managed to luck into 3 rufii on his way to the final. admittedly they were america's best rufii but america isn't very good at this game, except justin. so yeah wong has said if the money is on the line he'll pick abel against ryu and sagat against zangief, otherwise rufus is his favourite character and he'll try and use him as much as he can. I think he was pretty brave to use rufus as much as he did (he sent choi to losers earlier on) but as soon as the reset was coming I knew he'd switch to abel.

picking abel against ryu isn't really a counter-pick it's an even match-up. however picking abel against choi is def a counter-pick. he looked like he'd never seen an abel before lol

anyway, yeah, I'd've done the same. fuck fighting ryu with rufus imo, tht match is no fun

cozwn, Monday, 22 June 2009 09:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, daigo is the best sfiv player in the world. he has the highest win percentage and he plays the toughest comp to earn tht win percentage. justin went to japan and beat daigo 9-4 in a set but just look at this, it wasn't even close:

I just watched that Choi v. Wong final... it was kind of boring to watch. Choi took way too long to get aggressive with Ryu in the first match against Rufus and the second match vs. Abel wasn't great either.

What's actually frustating? That the game has no depth? Or is the playerbase that bad? Are people spamming the mic? Too many ragequits? The neverending racism? Too many flowchart Kens? I'm not looking forward to playing random guys at all. What drove me nuts about the existing online fighting communities were a combination of a)the dedicated players are generally far too insanely good having figured out all the game-breaking strats years ago and b)diving into a cesspool of even more socially retarded folks than myself (and sigh-- children), which is just really depressing to be involved in, tbh. This game gave me hope there'd be be less of this with a wider, more casual playerbase, but... (I'm guessing there aren't too many people on this board who are getting the PC version as it is)

- will come back w/a more lolindepth answer to this

That the game has no depth?
- nope, game is deep enough

Or is the playerbase that bad?
- playerbase is largely ok, I mostly play folk off forums etc anyway so it's not randoms

Are people spamming the mic?
- this is me lol

Too many ragequits?
- don't get any of these now w.champ mode and if someone rqs in a player match who cares

Too many flowchart Kens?
- mostly all gone but there flow chart other chars now

will expand on why I love and hate it so, laterzzz

Mindless Thugs Mixtape Volume One (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 25 June 2009 20:59 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm actually pretty good at sfiv; I can hang with the srk types but there is some BS in this game, e.g. take rufus vs sagat cos tht's what had me riled the other day:

- rufus doesn't have a fireball so he can't war w/sagat
- sagat has the best (fastest, strongest, best recovery fb in the game) and a godly standing heavy kick anti-air and he can combo into his very strong ultra off the heavy kick or the tiger uppercut if he has two ex stocks
- so as rufus u need to negotiate the best zoning game in sfiv and tiger barrage
- you can't jump at him so you have to walk forward, ducking high ts and jumping or focussing low shots or dive kicking over
- never jumping forward
- negotiating his fireballs: FADC one and block, you're now chipped and pushed back slightly and having to mentally process what to do with the next shot which is already coming at you;
- OK so you're up close, sagat has 100% you have 80% and has and he has two EX stocks. now you're in range for the best up close mix up in the game and at risk at any moment from a throw, his heavy hitting overhead move or a random tiger uppercut (which is completely safe for him cos he can cancel it with a fadc for two stocks if you block or if it hits and if it hits he can combo from there)
- you can't just sit in crouch block cos his overhead hurts, his throw puts you right across the screen which is exactly where you don't want to be against him and if he lands a crouching light kick then he can combo into the tiger uppercut and combo from there
- meanwhile this shit is all quite easy for him to do, but you have to process all the thoughts of blocking, teching, not to mention prosecuting your own offense and mix-up
- you make a mistake or you try to throw or tech and he frame traps you or whatever, he can throw out the best move and best poke in the game (tiger knee) which by the way breaks your focus attack, puts you in UNBELIEVABLE hitstun and on block leaves him positive so you can enjoy a mix-up with that
- oh yeah if tht shit hits, u get knocked back to the edge of the screen again
- it's easy to be hit by a random TU, which can lead to 60% loss of life
- can't sit at the back of the screen a neutral jump TUs all day either so you need to fight him, that's why you're exposed to the TU

^^^this is a particularly strained example but it's a similar deal for a lot of the cast (balrog, blanka, ken, guile, vega) against sagat

so yeah sagat's a bitch

- the stages are massive so people can just run away all day and you have to chase them around, pecking health off them; you can beat these dudes w/out thought but it'll take you the full 99secs to do so
- some chars jabs are ridic: so you're trying to fight balrog or bison up close, well you better have godly execution cos one missed link and you'll eat their 3frame jab which EVERYBODY even my mum just mashes when they're close, and balrog can combo into his ultra if he lands one
- enjoy mashed dragon punches in the middle of your strings too: combos tht involve links and not cancels are not watertight and meanwhile the game has auto-guard so if you are hit once you block everything so when someone starts their combo and you're playing ryu just block the first hit and then start mashing dp (even better if you have two stocks and ultra loaded) and if there is any gap in there combo or if they use a (legitimate combo) link then you'll whap them
- ^^^ these last two are exacerbated by the online portion

all this being said, it's a satisfying game and it's very tactical and deep and the chars are fun even if it is a little slow and the braindead mashing is stupid, it has a lot to recommend it even to low/mid players like me and a high level it's entertaining to watch

plus super turbo, third strike and alpha 3 are all much later iterations of their respective engines: they got a lot right with iv out of the gate so hopefully w/sfiv 2: giant attack it'll be a great game
