are you sure that's the right code for yr ghosthouse? when i try it says "course or maker not found"

i'm pumped about my new one i'm working on. it has miniboss, boss, and a locked door that requires several pink coins to enter.

it's basically got everything

this was great! i played it about 8 times before beating it (kept beating the miniboss but doing dumb things along the way to make me small), then beat it twice more!

i challenge anyone on the ilx messageboard except for esby to defeat my undisputed world record of 52 seconds

the gimmicky levels tend to be the most popular, i think, but i really enjoy levels that are just straight up challenging super mario

i will never make a typo ever again (Karl Malone), Saturday, 6 July 2019 15:40 (four years ago) link

If I had to choose between this and the SMB University switch thing

wait is Wii U short for University? i never really thought about it!

i haven't played either of the New Super Mario/Luigi U games, but i want to! i guess it's kind of obvious, but i would only go for mario maker if you have a genuine interest in making levels (or just fucking around with the editor, which is also fun) and playing home made creations. there are about 100 nintendo-created levels in the story mode, but i would guess those are going to pale next to the new super mario u levels

i will never make a typo ever again (Karl Malone), Saturday, 6 July 2019 15:44 (four years ago) link

it is not short for university

i had just bought this game to play other ppl's levels and bask in their superior creativity.. reaallly underestimated how much i'd enjoy putting levels together myself. it's actually fun! stayed up late last nite messing w/a couple more

Moonlight Boat Ride: BKY-S7S-FRF
Porplevillea: J83-XXD-03G

appreciate you playing my 1st level karl, i don't think i know anyone else who has this game so will prolly be posting a few levels here w/zero plays lol. def will check out anything that gets posted itt!

i'll try your two others later tonight, esby! i finally finished my new level! it's definitely not easy, but hopefully it's not super hard, either. after you spend so many hours making these things, it's hard to tell. here's the code:

BHG-CN2-FJG

please for the love of god someone try it. i gave up everything for this level, fucking everything. there's nothing left

i will never make a typo ever again (Karl Malone), Monday, 8 July 2019 01:22 (four years ago) link

I really enjoy watching high ranked multiplayer matches on twitch (users: Dode, iateyourpie). At the higher ranks there are far less laggy games because there are far less laggy players. Also, laggy players can be blocked so that you never face off against them again.

My first level: CVN-9PX-D0G
I enjoy fast jumping so it is based around that (it’s a good level). If anyone needs help in the first tricky section turn on comments.

Oh yeah, I bought a Switch almost a month ago specifically for SMM2.

ilm jive mind (FlopsyDuck), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 01:24 (four years ago) link

Everyone who has cleared my course gave me like. Everyone else didn't.

I watched streamers (with small chatrooms) play my level. The first time I uploaded it I went back and made it easier because the first streamer thought it was annoying/hard.

When I watched 2 people play the revised version today, one guy had a lot of fun and another guy got irritated and said that I should change it to make it "less exact"/easier.

People don't outright say it but they will likely never ❤️ a level if it doesn't fall into their skill-level comfort-zone.

ilm jive mind (FlopsyDuck), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 15:30 (four years ago) link

i'm gonna try to give yr level a shot tonight! i would rate my mario skillz at about 8.2/10. i can play SMB3 all the way through, but i'm not very good at levels that require advanced tricks like shelljumping

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 15:34 (four years ago) link

I will try the level codes in this thread tonight

i am fucking terrible at this; can't get past five levels in the normal course

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:24 (four years ago) link

how do courses get placed in the easy/normal/hard neverending path? do they just eventually hit a critical threshold of number of plays, and then the difficulty path depends on the clear rate? or do you have to mail nintendo a $15 check? because i'm not doing that unless they send me Dragon Warrior on NES and a 1-year subscription to nintendo power

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 16:50 (four years ago) link

The Sacrifice of Yoshi - Liked the overall shape (every which way) and steady difficulty

Five pink coins buys a key - At first I thought I would like it more because of the meandering layout but I got myself lost looking for the last exit even though I had entered the key door right next to it twice. This one also seemed sloppy
The
Escape the Ghousthouse! - Liked the one room layout and ghost interference made for some good hazards. The level made me think of my feet with the spin jump.

Porplevillea - Again I like the one room layout. This time it is more aesthetically pleasing. I died a bunch and learned a thing or two. Enjoyable albeit hard challenge.

ilm jive mind (FlopsyDuck), Wednesday, 7 August 2019 16:27 (four years ago) link

really cool level, flopsy! i can tell how much effort went into it. it was a perfect challenge for me because it definitely took me many tries for each section, but i could also see how it was supposed to be done and it never seemed impossible.

brain dead operatus (FlopsyDuck), Thursday, 26 September 2019 23:58 (four years ago) link

xp

I've been watching some "CarlSagan42" videos lately. His specialty is playing troll levels -- levels where players needs to make decisions, and the designer tries to get them to choose the wrong ones. Lots of creative terminology like "carl box" (an area where stopping and thinking is the wrong choice), "anti-softlock" (areas where you would be stuck, but there's a difficult way to kill yourself) and "twice twice" (two different areas that look the same). I'm impressed by how varied SMM2 levels can be.

Here's a good example.

wasdnuos (abanana), Friday, 27 September 2019 00:01 (four years ago) link

Juz and Carl are like a team. The whole crew of kaizo players seem to know each other. It’s kind of funny in a way.

All the Ryukahr videos that popped up in my youtube recommendations used to annoy me because whenever I tried to watch his videos I was put off by his boring, soft persona. Then one day I was watching GlitchCat7 on twitch and he brought up a story about how Ryukahr saved him. At one of the GDQs GlitchCat’s pants started smoking and Ryu got Glitch’s attention. Apparently his vaporizer was acting up in his pocket. Anyways it was cool how GlitchCat spoke fondly of Ryu being a total bro about it. I changed my opinion on Ryu. I still don’t watch his videos but all these guys in the mario maker/smw hack scene seem like genuinely good guys. I admit I was also too quick to judge ThaBeast as well. He looked like some edgy kid and then I clicked his video and heard his strong southern accent and saw how genuinely chill he is. (I don’t know if he knows the other guys but he definitely has strong skills at very difficult mario maker 2 levels).

oh, this might be the thread for this...

i have a memory of a mario level, must've been a snes game, marioworld probably, which was mostly / partly vertical rather than horizontal and you had to use trampolines to go up and up. some kind of tree? i don't remember yoshi being around, was mario on his own (so not yoshi's island)

i've looked at various mario maps and can't find it, but they are large and it's hard to tell from the backgrounds, but perhaps someone here remembers.

six golden coins always jumps out to me because six is not the number that is used for things like that. there can be 3 big things. rule of 3. 7 will also work. 8 is common (a lucky number in some places, the number of worlds in smb1 and 3. 4 tasks is solid. 5 is not good but it'll work in a pinch. 10 works but just barely, getting too large to keep track of. 2 is not enough. 6, though? no one does 6

perhaps? i think it must be - the sproingy things and the trampoline. the brown background looks like bark. and all the other vertical worlds have different mechanics (netting, lifts, falling)

oh, that gameboy game is completely new to me, but has interesting bits in it

the snes was my brother's, and i'd only get to play it whilst home for christmas, a week here, a week there. over the space of a few years i finished supermarioworld and was most of the way through yoshi's island when he sold it (maybe even gave it away?) to one of his mates and i never saw it again 8(

did go looking for a mini-snes but...

koogs, Thursday, 17 November 2022 17:37 (one year ago) link

10 works but just barely, getting too large to keep track of

me and 150 of my favourite digital creatures disagree (as well as me and 108 of my favourite stars of destiny)

but re: 6, 6 never felt weird to me but also SML2 was like the 4th video game i ever owned, and i grew up in canada so hockey was the default sport, a famously 6 person per side sport. 6 can make a hexagon OR a very nice triangle, good number

two weeks pass...

the thing about this game is that I just know if I was around in the Switch era when I was a kid I would've been absolutely obsessed with it. I mean I used to make "Jump Dude" levels on notebook paper. so I thought I'd let my son give it a try even though he's only 8 and the level maker menu is pretty complex for something in a Nintendo game. well he figured it out in about 10 minutes, proceeded to make some of the dumbest levels ever concieved, and is now talking about it all the time. he just has so many ideas. and after the first 5 or 6 tries he's actually making them kind of fun instead of basically impossible. I'm afraid I've created a monster.

This co-op level is one of the more insane SMM things I've seen:

Also apparently people succeeded in clearing all possible levels in the first SMM before they shut down the servers, there are some fun videos about the effort.
