"Play a little music, meet some people...they might be in bathing suits, but once the music starts they are there..."

This is pretty epic smoothe.

7 String bass

Drummer is really killer.

Interesting how in that clip, Ritenour sounds more versatile, like he has more range, but Carlton is bringing more rock edge.

They play very well together - very conversational. I like Carlton a lot (not least because of his work with the Dan).

Ritenour is very skilled and inventive but for some reason I have never felt any special connection to what he is doing. It's a "wow, but also... why?" reaction.

To be fair my reaction to most chops-centric music is "wow, but also... why?"

i remember seeing some incredibly dorky photos of ritenour in the 90s--thread for discussion of guitarists i have only heard of because i read guitar magazines in the late 90s but he's pretty good here! agree that they have a nice chemistry. could be listening to a lot worse things on a nice day in newport.

There is definitely some life style going on in the crowd.

It immediately reminded me of the Balboa Island scenes in Arrested Development.

"ITS THE CALIFORNIA WINE SPRITZER!"

No doubt all these cats can play and it is pretty much perfect soundtrack for that particular scene.

I bet it got pretty swanky if they did those back in the 70s.

People at the Newport festivals all seem way more hip, laid back and traditional.

Montreaux is probably a pretty slick scene too.

Attn James, do you have any recommendations on a book for someone starting on jazz guitar? Truly asking for a friend.

would this be for someone self-teaching? And how much other guitar experience/knowledge do they have, and how much more general musical experience/knowledge do they have?

Let's say pretty knowledgeable musically and an accomplished electronic music producer, but picking up the guitar again after a long absence

Like can they read? Do they know scales? Theory?

Sund4r knows of some good Berklee books, I think. I really like Mick Goodrick’s The Advancing Guitarist, but it’s not quite a method book, more of a deep, how-to-think-about things book.

I love Ted Dunbar's books, but I think they are out of print. They're also a little out there and not 100% user friendly. I think there are pdf copies floating around on the internet.

Do they already know how to play guitar and want to learn jazz?

Anyway now I remember the very first book I found useful was Arnie Berle’s
Chords and Progressions for Jazz and Popular Guitar

Thanks all. Scales & theory yes, idk about traditional notation, but I passed these on.

A lot of that stuff can be learned from non-guitar books tbh

There is just some really good guitar instructional videos out there. There was one Italian jazz one I found that had a thing on just not moving position or hand and working on intervals right where you are at that kind of opened up some things about the instrument for me.

This one is entertaining. Playing these chords on a guitar are a bitch, but I was messing around doing some jamming with a drum machine having the bass line play the root and playing off it to get this sound.

Hendrix uses this a bunch but he plays it as a arpeggio lick doing that slide up to get the 9.

He has a lovely record out right now, does not seem to have caught fire yet (<1000 play counts on spotify). He's only in his early 20s though and I have a feeling he will become a mainstay of the whole Americana/Bluegrass circuit if he sticks it out.
