so just to get this straight. trump's obviously racist and anti-democratic attempt to add the citizenship question to the census was unsuccessful only because he made it too obvious that the purpose of adding it was "contrived" (according to chief roberts). but in so doing, he left the door open for trump to get the question in at some point - it was almost an invitation to make a more convincing show of "enforcing the Voting Rights Act" and keep the shenanigans to a minimum.

then, a few days later, the DOJ suddenly announces they're not going to add the question to the census, that they're going to print with it.

then, the president just tells them to add the question to the census, so they stop the presses (literally?) and reverse. what trump just did was beyond "contrived", it was just a plain order.

wtf is going on here
