HANK: I'm only going to read this once. "Hi, my name is Ladybird. I like long walks, my arthritis medication, and two cups of kibble a day. I'll try to outsmart you and get three cups, but I know you're too clever for that, Ms. Platter."
LUANNE: I don't know, Uncle Hank. She did write this letter and everything.

Bobby: What's that in your hand, grampa?

Cotton: Head of a nazzy! Nope, canteen.

From last week:

<trying to get on the tv show ZZ Top are making at Hank's house>
John Redcorn: Well, I have been sleeping with the wife of my friend for 14 years.
Dale: I'm sure Hank'll forgive you.

Dale in the stands at a softball game: "Come on John Redcorn, SCORE! Can you believe this guy? He never strikes out!"

Oilyrags, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I've probably posted this a few times on this thread already, but this is still one of the best shows on television and might be Mike Judge's best creation. The ZZ Top episode was the closest it's been to losing the plot because of a celebrity guest, and it still held it together. The Simpsons is handling guest plots worse as the seasons go by...

Who's been the best guest on this show in terms of keeping a coherent plot and actually blending into the show? I was going to say Johnny Depp, then I remembered the Chuck Mangione episode!

mh, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Chuck Mangione episodes!

Was Ben Stiller the voice of the guy who joined Strickland Propane, who annoyed everyone?

I like that episode, but my copy missed off the end credits.

(i accept that's a bit of a mis-quote)

Ste, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:40 (seventeen years ago) link

One of the great things about their use of guest stars is they generally have them play a role, not play themselves in the crap way the Simpsons has been known to do.

That said, best guest star is definitely Ann Richards.

Hank, Bobby, Peggy and Luanne were animated into an episode of "The Simpsons" (1989). At one point, Homer makes a reference to the Springfield football team playing the Arlen football team, then, the shot goes to the Hill family, where Hank says "We came two thousand miles for this?" The rest of the characters do not speak. In an episode of King of the Hill, Bobby also has a Bart Simpson doll on his bookshelf.

i did not know this

Ste, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Almost instantly classic: any episode with a Bill flashback. After being set up as kind of a sad sack for seasons, we figure out that he even though he's kind of an earnest, solid guy that he used to be the guy that the others wanted to be. It's mildly heartbreaking to see him as a middle-aged mess after that perspective.

Oh, and what about that recent episode where we find out that Bill's cousin is some sort of French-descended Louisianan gentleman and Bill kind of is too, by extension?

mh, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

theres a whole episode about bill's cajun southern gothic family!!!!

HANK: So, Gilbert, how do the Saints look this year?
GILBERT: Oh, I am more familiar with sinners than saints, my dear. And sinners always look good.

ESMAY: The Dauterive blood is down to a trickle. My two sons and my son-in-law, Girac, Rene and Emeril, died of arterial sclerosis in their twenties, leaving three desperate, childless widows to wander this house. They are strings on a heart stretched far too taut, and if they are not strummed soon... well... they really need to be strummed.
PEGGY: This is right out of Shakespeare!

and what, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:19 (seventeen years ago) link

man i haven't seen any of the recent ones

an all-time favorite is the one where bobby joins the soccer team (coached by Will Ferrell) and he and his dad have this conversation:

Hank: "Whats that on your arm there bobby? A muscle?"
Bobby: "No, its a lump from when I got hit by a football. You know dad, the soccer team doesn't have any lumps or bruises. And coach Lucas lets them eat oranges at halftime."
Hank: "Bobby, I didn't think I'd ever need to tell you this, but I would be a bad parent if I didn't. Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep them busy while their husbands did the cooking."
[pause]
Bobby: "Why do you hate what you don't understand?"
Hank: "I don't hate you Bobby!"
Bobby: "I was talking about soccer."
Hank: "Oh. Yeah, I hate soccer."

Dale: "Aw, I've been at the gun club ... playing Russian Roulette."
Nancy: "Did you win?"
Dale: "You're not familiar with the game, are you?"
Nancy: "No..."
Dale: "Yeah I won."

haha when connie's having steak at the Hill's for the second night in a row:

Connie: Ugh! How many cows do you people eat in a year?
Hank Hill: Wait! We figured this out once!

deej, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Man, the soccer episode is great, especially the end, when Bobby convinces Joseph to quit soccer and go back to football. Paraphrasing here:

Hank - "You know Bobby, that was a great decision putting Joseph back into play. You might make a great coach someday." (puts his hand on Bobby's shoulder)

Bobby - "I think I'd like that, as long as I could wear the uniform."

Hank - "Uh, OK."

Bobby - "And a cape."

Hank (removes his hand from Bobby's shoulder)

"We used to call him 'sour coach Sours! We were good kids though."

Couch Sours was played by Phil Hendrie

Phil was raised in Arcadia, California. He attended Pasadena City College for two years, then went to work in Orlando Florida doing construction and cement finishing.

Phil worked as a DJ in a variety of radio stations around the country. In 1990, he was doing a talk show at a radio station in Ventura, California, when he created his first alter persona, Raj Fahneen. Phil then moved to Atlanta, then Minneapolis, then Miami, modifying and improving his characters and the format of the show.

Phil finally wound up back in Los Angeles, at KFI AM640, in 1996. His program became syndicated with the Premier Radio Network in 1999, and was heard on over 100 radio stations around the country.

Phil has 'appeared' in guest roles doing character voices for Fox TV shows Futurama and King of the Hill. He has appeared in the flesh on "Dinner and a Movie" on Turner, and guest starred on NBC's new show A.U.S.A. He is currently working with writer Peter Toland on a new show for NBC.

June 2006: Phil retires from his nationally syndicated radio show in order to pursue his career in acting.

Almost all of the celebrity voices work really well on King of the Hill, they've never been forced and cringeworthy like most of the ones on the Simpsons.

the ep in which peggy has to teach sex ed was on last week, with one of my favorite bobby lines: "i'm worried about being a slut."

The Peggy episodes are the best, with my favorite being the one where she takes her class to Mexico on a field trip and accidentally kidnaps a Mexican girl. The one where she got the job at the Catholic school by pretending to be a nun was awesome too.

They did eventually send her a bit too far around the bend, but I think it's great that they dare to make the mother of a young child an unlikable domineering bitch.

[quote[My favourite episode is the one where Bobby falls in love with Luanne's plastic beautician school head.[/quote]

that one is great, and also the one where he falls in love with kerri strug ("it is compulsory that you be my valentine").

the TV show with the crime-fighting priest taking a sip of communion wine and then blowing fire at the assassin sneaking up on him is one of the funniest moments in human history

Monignor Montoya!

You know they made a live-action pilot of that as a proposed spinoff. That pilot is my holy grail.

I stopped watching around 2000 because I started working Sunday nights and the Simpsons was starting to suck, so I couldn't bother to tape it. Watching the Season 5 & 6 KoTH DVDs has been pretty great.
