Tep, Yahoo mail is much better than hotmail, though you have to pay to get it forwarded to an email reader on yr computer. I'm wondering how long I'll have to wait before I start to get spam on my shiny new email which I am NEVER posting on the interweb.

(I don't think the film was any good. I just did a bit of research for Stefan Elliot, the director. It wasn't very exciting, but I was able to do a flawless camp Australian accent by the end)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:31 (twenty years ago) link

It had the guy from That Thing You Do in it who's dating Christina Applegate and was in that scene in The Sweetest Thing (this guy is all about things) and the movie where Jessica Lange chases Gwynneth Paltrow around, I think, didn't it?

I'm not gonna pay just for this email account, it's purely a reader-mail thing, so I figure I'll just check hotmail from time to time.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:36 (twenty years ago) link

I'm having lunch with both my old bandmates in a few minutes! I know, it's a miracle. I haven't been in touch with them at all really since I told them my news. I'm hoping we'll be able to make peace, because I really don't want to lose them as friends, even though I'll be half a country away.

Whoop-whoop, one and all!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

I hope it goes well, Sarah.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

Ah, snap.

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

What is this weird sub-subcultural pit?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:01 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, hello Nick. It's nothing that would interest you. Move along now.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:02 (twenty years ago) link

I've never even checked these threads before.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:02 (twenty years ago) link

They tend to be a niche interest, Horace. Not enough bile and sarcasm for most ILXors ;)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:04 (twenty years ago) link

or too much, perhaps

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:05 (twenty years ago) link

How so, JBR?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:05 (twenty years ago) link

It's sort of like a place ILXors act all chummy and lame crap like that, huh?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:06 (twenty years ago) link

ps x-post

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:06 (twenty years ago) link

no comment

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:07 (twenty years ago) link

That's about the size of it, yeah.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:08 (twenty years ago) link

so, like, just by posting in here, I'm entitled to some hollow platitudes?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:10 (twenty years ago) link

*sigh*

Take that attitude elsewhere, Horace.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:11 (twenty years ago) link

well, cuz I could use some unmerited praise or something today...

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:11 (twenty years ago) link

it's just where a few of us check in with each other and update on our lives.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:12 (twenty years ago) link

Ah, nope. It's probably the only place on this bitch where platitudes have some kind of meaning. We don't bother with the "I'm more cynical and clever than you and for some fucked-up reason this makes me happy".

(x-post)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:12 (twenty years ago) link

I'm sorry, I was just having a bit of a larff and seriously was sorta in my passive-aggressive way testing the waters to see if it was safe to post about how freaking nervous I am about my "meeting" with my boss's boss in 80 minutes.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:13 (twenty years ago) link

Well in that case :)

What's the meeting about? Are you likely to be judged in some way? Will action (positive or negative) be the outcome? Tell all - I'm sure we can all empathise.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:15 (twenty years ago) link

I just ate a whole raw clove of garlic and fluid is oozing from every hole in my face.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:17 (twenty years ago) link

Well, basically, either I'll be fired or I'll quit. It's sort of ridiculous and I think I've forced his hand on this. I'm just hoping I don't chicken out. Cuz if he doesn't fire me and I don't get up the nerve to quit, that's the end for me.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:21 (twenty years ago) link

Walk Tall, dear sir. Steal his pen, too.

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

Oh my hokey. Well, if it's that cut and dried, then I guess fate will take you wherever. It may well be that he'd much rather have you resign than fire you - it's easier for all concerned, they don't have to worry about labour laws etc. etc.

Good luck regardless, H. Mann - it'll be sucky but over soon. Let us know how it goes.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:24 (twenty years ago) link

also, it'd probably be a good idea to erase as much of your sent email as you possibly can.

just to make sure...

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

they don't have to worry about Labour Laws anyhow, since it's my f/lance boss('s boss). But basically I called him and my, uh senior colleague on some bullshit and I'm best-possible-worlds going to get an apology and possibly some more favourable terms (ha ha ha ha ha) or I'm going to take my dignity elsewhere.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:29 (twenty years ago) link

What, exactly, are you worried about quitting for? I mean I'm sure getting paid shit is nice to do crap work that only pretends to advance your career, but since you've got exciting freelance opportunities elsewhere in more prestigious place *and* you'd probably make about as much money working at the Petro-Canada, you might as well walk out with your head held high...

Man, also I am really not getting back into this job thing. I feel like playing hooky again. And having a drink. Though maybe just of coffee. Bleh.

Also, H., it always seemed odd that you didn't post to these threads.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:32 (twenty years ago) link

It is also a bit tricky getting back into the ILX swing of things, since suddenly wow do I not care about most of these threads. But I still like you lot on this thread (and some folks on some of the other threads, of course), so I'm still here.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:35 (twenty years ago) link

the size of these threads is intimidating. i don't do well in crowds.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:35 (twenty years ago) link

and it's the whole bird in the hand thing with the f/lancing. and I do like the intimacy (to a degree) with my audience here.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

Casuistry: once you've been here everything else just seems like kind of a waste of time, huh? ;-)

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

I've been in the same boat since November, Chris, and don't seem to view the water any differently even though it's been a few weeks. One of those things.

Horace, don't sweat it, these are pretty low key threads. I think of them as like a faculty lounge without the misery poker.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

"Misery poker"! Ha! I haven't heard that one before.

H, if you want that intimacy, go back to writing stories for the PD (or just give in and pitch the stories to the paper, but tell them to fuck off with their exclusivity claptrap).

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

and I get it from the radio show anyway. which is waaay more fun. if I'm not gonna make any money, I better damn well have fun. Yeah. Now I'm getting psyched up. Eye of the M-F tiger, yee-ow!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

(plus there's a sick and twisted Count of Monte Cristo part of me that really thrives on antagonism, but I suppose that's everywhere, huh?)(by that I mean antagonism, not obsessions with the C of M C)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

Plus you know what happens when you leave a job. ROAD TRIP!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:50 (twenty years ago) link

T-Minus 30 mins, pulse rate: up

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:01 (twenty years ago) link

Have a quick wank.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:02 (twenty years ago) link

All I know is that obsessions with the Count of Monte Cristo can get you through some grueling times in boyprison. But that's because I don't know anything that isn't from the movie Sleepers.

If that were true, I guess I'd hate women, actually, because they'd all be Minnie Driver.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

Horace, I kiss you.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

you call 30 minutes a quick wank? you self-indulgent madman!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

(Actually I'm just in a kissing mood - I kiss you all. Again.)

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

xpost, obv
dbble xpost now

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:06 (twenty years ago) link

I'm having the "getting back into ILX after a break of about one week" problem too. It's better today than it was yesterday, but there's so much dumb shit on here. And no, I don't think ILX is "getting worse," I just think my tolerance has gone down.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:09 (twenty years ago) link

I was just talking about something like that off-board, but I don't want it to sound like I'm steering this in a "we're so cliquey, oh so cliquey, ILE all sucky bad" direction. I think a good chunk of things is that it's December and things are worn out and worn thin, here there and everywhere.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:11 (twenty years ago) link

Well, I've got so much stuff going on in my personal life too, like moving and packing and apartments and selling my car and etc etc, and ILX just seems less interesting/relevant in contrast. And people I like aren't posting as much.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:13 (twenty years ago) link

Well, that and I think teaching has eaten up most of my desire for a lot of kinds of conversations, the way working at a movie theater probably means you get sick of hearing people talk about the Matrix, or whatever.

xpost -- yeah, there's always that, too. When I moved, I was too busy to notice the lack of ILE.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:14 (twenty years ago) link

No, no, much like the 30-minute wank, being into ILX is a momentum thing, made easier when you keep yourself unaware that there's a great big world out there waiting for you.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:14 (twenty years ago) link
