Todd Barry was a drummer, I don't think he's going back. Wasn't Letterman a drummer too?

Juana Molina was Argentina's biggest comedian in the 90s as I understand it - don't think they've ever really forgiven her for becoming a musician.

SK have reminded me of them in the past, too - strumming patterns, beats without prominent cymbal parts, maybe some vocal approaches.

Todd Barry otm, he's not going back but has guested with Superchunk and Yo La Tengo, and played on Mates Of States' AV Undercover session (no longer on youtube, boo). And as of last weekend, committed to playing REM's reunion. As opener, but hey, if Bill Berry doesn't get onboard...

Conan O'Brien!

I counted Chevy's college band bcz it was pre-comedy but Conan drummed at a house party or two while he was already editor of the Lampoon?

Rollins' talking shows are absolutely stand-up

the one I saw was more akin to a Ted talk

I haven't seen him since the 50th birthday tour, and I know he's done tours where he shows photos and discusses war zones he's visited & so on, but of his 29 talking-on-stage albums, 27 of them are primarily "telling funny stories about things that happened"

I just rewatched the Fallon thing again with someone and he was like, why is Carrie singing so much and he had so forgotten how much lead Carrie had sang before. But yeah I don't like the preprogrammed performance gestures.

Yerac, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 20:00 (four years ago) link

They didn't even have a camera on Janet for any sort of close up.

Yerac, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 20:00 (four years ago) link

Forgot about Juana Molina!! This is reminding me how little I like comedy.

I'm not super familiar w/S-K (it's been ages since I saw them live), but I just watched that Fallon perf., and it does very much feel like "band awkwardly shoehorned into a new look/sound." I can also see why a freewheeling drummer may not be psyched at the prospect of an entire tour playing that beat.

stan by me (morrisp), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 21:09 (four years ago) link

I feel like Rollins is a weird example, his whole persona was everything, the music, the books, the spoken word

Janet is an exceptionally great drummer but I don't know that I ever thought of her as 'freewheeling'. She always struck me as rather precise and deliberate.

akm, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 22:11 (four years ago) link

The beat in the verse is more tricky and unorthodox and strange than these posts are giving her credit for, but yeah, I can't imagine its especially fun to play

We’ll have to buy Carrie’s second book to learn the real story

calstars, Tuesday, 2 July 2019 22:13 (four years ago) link

xxxp i would even say uptight

j., Tuesday, 2 July 2019 22:50 (four years ago) link

It's a cool linear, programmed-esque beat, yeah. It's exactly the sort of thing I find fun to play, way more fun than fast rock n' roll with lots of fills. But maybe she doesn't.

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 23:00 (four years ago) link

Whiney clearly studying SK drum patterns closely. Worth an audition at least, surely?

Hmm. There are some curious red flags in that story. Citing the presence of a Gucci bag, the group crediting a band "designer," Brownstein deciding to put more energy toward the band only after her Hulu pilot didn't get picked up, Clark being really involved with lyrics and writing and arrangements (which is sort of ultimately the biggest complaint someone like Albini has with the concept of a "producer"). I don't know if we'll ever get a straight answer, but I assume one day it will at least be more clear why Weiss left. lol at Brownstein saying they should have called the album "Let's Stay Together."

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 23:38 (four years ago) link

"They wanted the album to sound “really gross,” Tucker, in contrasting lacy white, said, as her collaborators mmm-hmmmed in affirmation. “Like, disgusting, dirty, gross, dusty.” She went to a Depeche Mode show and got absorbed by synths; Clark and Brownstein saw Nine Inch Nails, and heard industrial."

They succeeded - all the songs so far do sound "really gross"

Freeze Instr., Thursday, 1 August 2019 02:12 (four years ago) link

reading between the lines i'm starting to think they wanted to style the shit out of this tour and janet wasn't into it.

Like, for the first time in their lives? No way could that be the case. Weird writing.

it's wild how Sleater-Kinney sold out by being in the presence of a Gucci bag owned by someone not in the band.

omar little, Thursday, 1 August 2019 03:26 (four years ago) link

Like, for the first time in their lives? No way could that be the case.

It’s totally possible: the article isn’t saying they’d never heard either band before.

(yes it’s weird framing & might not be at all precise, but eg I actively love hours of music by each band, and have seen a grand total of four minutes combined concerts by both)

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Thursday, 1 August 2019 04:23 (four years ago) link

Sorry to be unclear; I’m just talking about the phrase “heard industrial.”

the last Berry La Croix in the work fridge (morrisp), Thursday, 1 August 2019 04:41 (four years ago) link

Reads pretty clear - that's what they 'heard' in their heads as they headed to the studio.

The new single sounds like they heard "We Are Young" instead of NIN though.

two months pass...

I just re-listened to the album "No Cities To Love", and all that time I've wished for a sequel to Rush's "Grace Under Pressure", the damn thing was right there the whole time. There are obvious commonalities, like the guitars in the intro and post-chorus to "Price Tag" echoing the same sections of "The Body Electric"; the occasional controlled-wailing Geddyisms a la "Red Sector A" ("No-ohh!") in the vocals; the abrasive guitars but better because it's like 2 Lifesons (and the descending riff that opens "Surface Envy" reminds me of Alex's similarly-descending riff in the bridge of "Distant Early Warning"); post-punk/disco rhythms that pop in and out - is Janet Weiss the Neil Peart of our generation?; Anthem Records vs "No Anthems", etc.

But a lot of it, at least to my ears, is a similar essence that I can't quite explain, it's just *there*.

Now I know what I want to listen to right now (hint: not the S-K album).
