This playlist seems to comprise the definitive chronology of the On Cinema-verse (countdown to exasperated sic post detailing, at length, what's missing from said hi playlist): https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRT5PdjVF-ipL5SPXbmZXzfBchXVR8JTo

I Ate Those Food (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 06:15 (ten months ago) link

(No idea where that rogue 'hi' came from so that would be sic gripe #1., I'm sure.)

I Ate Those Food (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 06:18 (ten months ago) link

I graciously accept your thanks for my recommending that playlist to you

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 06:53 (ten months ago) link

I completely don’t get this

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 07:13 (ten months ago) link

Popcorn Classic is a really useful term for a certain kind of movie.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 09:37 (ten months ago) link

I thank u, sic, although I spent a long while watching a different, much less complete YT playlist (after starting on the even less complete playlist on that one website) so I just wanted to make sure no one else made my stupid mistake. I give this latest playlist five bags of popcorn and a hundred cups of soda.

I Ate Those Food (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 14:28 (ten months ago) link

The later seasons of Decker aren’t on youtube btw, but iirc they stop interacting directly with On Cinema episodes so it doesn’t stand out badly

(The two Ant-Man movies also don’t appear in the playlist, but do very much affect On Cinema video and twitter content )

forks if you were starting at an early point, try dropping in on a S4 or 5 episode, when the Tim vs Gregg tone is better established & there’s loads of backstory, to see if it pings any better with you

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:16 (ten months ago) link

eh I think starting in the beginning obscures what a slow build this show is

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:17 (ten months ago) link

er starting in the MIDDLE

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:17 (ten months ago) link

the whole of season 9 seems to be an extended satire on how annoying having dinner service at the Alamo Drafthouses is

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:27 (ten months ago) link

Todd Rundgren appears in the last episode of Decker...I knew that voice was familiar!!

"Why was he fired, did he forget to wipe down the microwave?"

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:34 (ten months ago) link

if someone "completely doesn't get" the show at the beginning, pushing on through twenty episodes of more of the same is probably going to bore and annoy them

oh yeah, the full real-time Trial Of Tim Heidecker coverage isn't on youtube either, just 10-15 minutes highlights from each day (iirc that's all I watched, then switched over for the full verdict)

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 18:41 (ten months ago) link

the trial is astonishingly great. you HAVE to watch the full thing and not just the highlights.

the satire of the kind of fake fancy junk food you get in north america - e.g. everything coming with truffle aoili - was very good

bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 19:16 (ten months ago) link

I would say you can watch highlights of the trial until Tim fires his attorney and starts defending himself, then switch to the full thing

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Wednesday, 3 July 2019 21:14 (ten months ago) link

no!!!!!!!

a couple of my old acquaintances recently started a video game podcast. I listened to one episode and thought about On Cinema the whole time. one of the guys has probably played 20,000 hours of video games but has absolutely nothing insightful to say about them, it's so spot on that I've almost come to view Tim & Gregg as real people

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 22:07 (ten months ago) link

Has anyone started an On On Cinema at the Cinema podcast yet

I just watched shakey's clip the other day. It wouldn't be nearly as beautiful without the interviewer's overt lack of interest in Gregg's banalities.

It's probably okay to just stop if you don't feel like it's a five-bagger.

What have you watched / listened to so far?

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Monday, 8 July 2019 02:25 (ten months ago) link

Me, I just bore witness to the cancellation of Decker season 3 this evening, so it's difficult to put myself back in the headspace of several years ago when I watched a handful of On Cinemas and said 'IDGI'. Suffice it say, I'm glad I got over myself.

now we will never know if Agent Kington would have defeated Dracula

The effects at Dracula's castle were a whole 'nother level of special. I particularly liked the table that followed Gregg around for a while.

i'm pretty much where brad is, i think - i watched all of S1 in one sitting and loved it. absolutely drove my partner crazy though, i think.

i love all the talk about how good it is to see some famous, sometimes washed up, actor "back on the big screen"

we haven't seen russell crowe in a while

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 10 July 2019 16:27 (ten months ago) link

"It's great seeing Brendan Frasier back in a movie again, I've always loved him, and I love looking at Katherine Heigl, she's just the kind of woman I like, in terms of beauty, and sex appeal, she is hot, she is a 10, actually"

"If you've seen the movie, you'd know it's an animated movie about a squirrel"

"You have to admit the technology now is so good that some of these animated movies look like real life"

"Some of them do, but when a squirrel starts talking, you generally know it's an animated picture"

frogbs, Wednesday, 10 July 2019 16:35 (ten months ago) link

You imagine there ought to be a real life Gregg out there, absolutely ecstatic about the selection of dusty old extremely forgettable VHS movies in some bin at a thrift shop, next to a some CD cases of old computer software, AOL trials, Yanni, baseball games for PS2 etc.

Evan, Wednesday, 10 July 2019 16:41 (ten months ago) link

Thank u for reminding me of the Nut Job review, frogs. Tim's overreaction to Gregg's joke about it being the name of Tim's autobiography was my first big On Cinema laugh.

Just recently saw some Neil Hamburger footage for the first time since I started watching this show. I don't know how I'd forgotten the extreme disparity between the two sides of Turkington, but it was a stark reminder.

Logy Psycho (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 10 July 2019 16:46 (ten months ago) link

I love that they generally never review actual hits, tentpole pics, oscar winners etc. not even huge mainstream garbage (MCU, Star Wars, Pixar etc) its almost always b-list shit that instantly vanishes from the public consciousness.

aka popcorn classics!

lmao the debt forgiveness special

it never stops being funny

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:19 (three months ago) link

wondering what kind of scam Tim is trying to pull on Toni, making her sign the annulment quickly and then changing his last name for some reason

also is it implied that he slept with the pastor? the way he kept looking at her instead of Toni...yeeesh

My read is that he sincerely loves Toni (or at least thinks he does) but he just can’t stop scheming and using people and chasing the next shiny thing.

Ok bloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:23 (three months ago) link

just gonna leave this here so you can watch it over and over

Tim comes pretty close to breaking

frogbs, Monday, 24 February 2020 15:28 (three months ago) link

Hahaha I also noticed the “quartet” have a hard time keeping a straight face at several points throughout the special

Ok bloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:36 (three months ago) link

Especially the part where he’s berating then for not knowing “Pop Goes the Weasel”

Ok bloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:38 (three months ago) link

i'm not sure if they were entirely in on the joke

frogbs, Monday, 24 February 2020 15:44 (three months ago) link

Yeah, the musicians on the last couple Oscar specials have come closest to puncturing the illusion. One of the dudes from last year's kinda drove me nuts with his excessively-hammy 'I'M LIKE SO SCARED OF TIM RIGHT NOW!' mugging.

Expart of Languidge (Old Lunch), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:45 (three months ago) link

I feel like Tim & co. would probably take great pains to let the musicians and impersonators know what's up ahead of time. Like, he's not gonna start vehemently abusing people who don't know he's just fucking around.

Expart of Languidge (Old Lunch), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:47 (three months ago) link

Unless he's legitimately hoping to get a rap in the mouth as extra seasoning.

Expart of Languidge (Old Lunch), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:48 (three months ago) link

i love the lameness of "it's movie time!" and how much gregg relishes it

didn't one of them provide the backing vocals to the acoustic empty bottle?

this special was really something. nice that gregg now has some deaths on his hands

frederik b. godt (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 21:19 (three months ago) link

the last 15 minutes of that must've been really cool to see live, they hold that shot just long enough to convince you that this is the end of On Cinema, before Axiom single-handedly (lol) saves the show

one month passes...

Mark Proksch interview.

Between K-Strass and Good Morning Tri-State, what draws you to morning news shows?

It’s everywhere, so everyone can relate to it. It’s also the closest thing we have to amateur television that’s on every single day. Especially in smaller towns, there’s a realness there, where the person who went to high school with you is now the weatherwoman. There’s that familiarity that is interesting to me. Playing around in that local-news world is really fun.

That’s what makes us all laugh. We’ve been doing these watch parties every Saturday night — me, Tim, Gregg, Jason Woliner, Fielder — where we’re watching dumb stuff, awful YouTube videos and such. The real world is infinitely funnier than anything that anyone could script.
