If Villa were actually interested in Kongolo as reported, then seriously he is literately a £50 million player at least at this valuation of talent.

at the risk of exposing myself to the ridicule of the masses...
Tyrone Mings was fucking fantastic for us in the second half of last season and was a massive factor in that ridiculous winning streak that took us from mid-table into the playoffs. he is a total fan fave already and i'm glad we've got him on a permanent deal. i mean probably we are massively overpaying but when Man Utd are talking about spending 70m on Harry Maguire or whatever the figure is being quoted atm i don't really care, what even is money
― Windsor Davies, Monday, 8 July 2019 01:11 (four years ago) link
Do you rate Tuanzebe, Windsor?
― Number None, Monday, 8 July 2019 07:26 (four years ago) link
Tyrone is a Big Character. He is steadfastly, unwaveringly Up For It. He Loves It.
He'll probably also be picking up some straight reds for abysmal last ditch interventions during 6-0 defeats to ooh, most of the top 8
I think Villa will go back down, because they have to pretty much buy a new team, and they seem to be taking lots of punts on unproven players to facilitate it. Maybe they'll sign loads of players with Premier League experience later in the window idk, but dropping 20mil on Tyrone doesn't suggest they're on some ultra-patient 5d chess bargain hunting
― Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 8 July 2019 10:07 (four years ago) link
The Guardian piece on Maguire today seemed pretty OTM, you can imagine a Guardiola or a Klopp or a Poch turning him into a real £70m player but the idea of Solskjaer doing that?
― Matt DC, Monday, 8 July 2019 20:37 (four years ago) link
aside from it defeating the purpose to pay 70m for a player you have to then turn into a 70m player
― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Monday, 8 July 2019 21:10 (four years ago) link
Has Pep improved Stones’ defending? Has Poch improved anyone’s defending? Idk.
Maguire has been consistently good enough over the last two years to suggest he doesn’t need to get that much better to be a regular starter in a top 4 defence. £70m seems about the going rate. West Ham are valuing Issa Diop at £5m more.
― ShariVari, Monday, 8 July 2019 21:19 (four years ago) link
£70m seems about the going rate.
For the English market, yes. For anyone outside it seems bonkers. Hell, Juve and Ajax are still bickering about De Ligt (for somewhere between 55-70m, in euros iirc). Maguire going for £70m is insane all over the world, except in England. I get why, up to a degree (file under: homegrown etc). Just wondering how many Tyrone Mings and Maguires it takes till England corrects, or is forced to correct, this hyperinflation. Not anytime soon, not with this tv dough, I reckon.

You know the market is as it should be when you see Feyenoord signing one Liam Kelly from Reading on a free and hailing him like the second coming of the lord jesus christ tbf
On topic: I don't understand why ManC or Liverpool or ManU hesitate to fork out 100m for De Ligt, when they seem all to keen to waste their money on filler like Stones and Maguire etc.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 8 July 2019 21:46 (four years ago) link
xp Poch arguably improved Vertongen, but not defensively imo
well he'd have to want to go there in the first place
― Number None, Monday, 8 July 2019 21:47 (four years ago) link
De Ligt is proving he's the anti Frenkie 'Barca has always been my dream club so I'm going there' de Jong. He's about the money, coupled with a club w/ some prospects, true. So that rules out ManU. ManC and Liverpool still very much asleep imo.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 8 July 2019 21:53 (four years ago) link
seems like an unnecessary extravagance for Liverpool
City, I guess, but they can't spend 50m+ on a centre back every season
― Number None, Monday, 8 July 2019 22:01 (four years ago) link
Liverpool's defence could be immense with a Van Dijk/De Ligt center, and relegate trash like Lovre/Gomez/Matip to the bench. I don't think that's too extravagant. For City, perhaps.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 8 July 2019 22:05 (four years ago) link
Gomez was great first half of the season and matip was excellent in the second half of the season so this 'trash' talk is hysterical nonsense.

― nxd, Tuesday, 9 July 2019 09:41 (four years ago) link
Calling Gomez trash is just rude and ignorant. And Matip was superb when he stepped in, really upped his game. He was the equal of Virgil in several games

FWIW I think Pep has improved even Stones although not anywhere near to the level he should be. FWIW Maguire is already better than Stones ever was but is likely to be brutally exposed with a United midfield that's starting to look like it'll be very short of anyone that can tackle.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 July 2019 14:17 (four years ago) link
our midfield as it stands (and minus, presumably, Pogba) is laughably poor in every respect

different info on whether its an obligation or an option
― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 8 August 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link
Mooy isn't one of the wasters that downed tools last season but he's been a shadow of the player he was for a while. This funny business of getting him to sign a contract extension then loaning him to Brighton might backfire on us - if he has another dud season it might be hard to move him on when the club is thinking how much they could have got for him in this window. He must have agitated for the move because we just received £15m for Billing and are not under pressure to sell and the players all take 40% wage cuts with the relegation - or something like that is written into all their contracts. Proper tight northern bstads!
― calzino, Thursday, 8 August 2019 16:49 (four years ago) link
I think it's an obligation to buy Lo Celso unless we fail to qualify for Europe. In which case it becomes an option, and he won't want to take it.
