one year passes...

This record is great! Love the classic Jerry balladry at the core of the album which segues beautifully into a breezy Eyes of the World

three years pass...

the new 50th anniversary CD set includes a couple demos which are pretty unique for the Dead. I'm guessing Jerry alone overdubbing on top of drum machine (!) and kinda goofy but sweet organ sounds. Kind of a Wild Honey vibe, but like, Grateful Dead songs pretty much arranged as they would be. Worth hearing if you're a fan for sure!

I have undoubtedly sung its praises on other Dead threads, but I highly recommend official GD podcast The Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast. I got real into it a few years ago when they were devoting an episode each to all the songs on Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, and then lost interest since. But it looks like they're doing the same thing on Wake of the Flood and I'm all in again. I listened to the "Mississippi Half Step" ep, and lots of great info. They have access to master tapes so they break down different tracks and elements in the songs, loads of interviews with studio engineers, band members and their hangers on, etc.

You have to skip through the initial several minutes of promoting various products and business, but once the host switches from Rich Mahan to Jesse Jarnow (as it does each episode 5-10 minutes in) the quality content ratio is shockingly high.

Yeah, fast forwarding through Mahan's (obligatory, can't really fault him) sales spiel, it's all worth hearing. I think every episode has been illuminating and interesting, always some interesting tidbits and they find so many people to interview.
