Yes. Alas, that ended up being her greatest accomplishment by some distance.

― Simon H.,

its a good accomplishment, at least!

xp.
she's a socially conservative, anti-immigration leftist

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Monday, 24 June 2019 20:05 (four years ago) link

although she's pretty coy about it at times

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Monday, 24 June 2019 20:10 (four years ago) link

also her book was riddled with typos

big beautiful wario (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 24 June 2019 20:13 (four years ago) link

huh, reading about her anti immigration article now, i missed this particular twitter storm. whats the socially conservative angle?

dsb, Monday, 24 June 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link

xp I feel like her book snuck out in the crossover period where people hadn't yet realized that all of the original people from zero books (the publisher) had left and they were on the verge of just releasing a mixed bag of increasingly questionable junk

not to say everything from the original group was good, but there was a definite shift

Angle Nagle says "SJW feminists" have a "strange sexual politics" because they believe consent is crucial to prevent sexual harassment, assault and rape. She then weirdly ties this in with them being for the legalisation of abortion and prostitution, implying she opposes that pic.twitter.com/6xq0xrwREi

Have you seen Wobble Palace? She's great in it, and it's a very good movie - trailers make it look misleadingly bad.

How much of the podcast have any of you listened to? Up to the listener to decide whether or not the sincere points they make are warmed over Paglia or not. I think they make a clear distinction when they're being contrarian and sarcastic ("going to the Wing made me want to detonate the vest") and when they're sincere (concern about the climate apocalypse being a "bourgeois eschatology" or Tim Faust's gauche "Abortion Rules!" t-shirt). I understand why people don't like the show, but what's to be bothered about? They wouldn't have a growing audience if they weren't speaking to some disaffected and stifled segment of the left, which remains largely humorless and rigid. Frankly I've been shocked how many of my hard left friends have recently become massive RS fans, ranging in age from 20 to 50. These are not libertarians. And none of them agree with everything D&A say. I don't think that Anna professing the joy of housework or defending Zizek stymies social progress, and to suggest that people aren't discerning enough to tell when they're kidding, being hyperbolic, or serious... I don't think that gives their audience enough credit at all, which again, has really expanded recently and shows no signs of slowing down.

Based on your characterization of their serious opinions... they suck regardless so I'm not sure the ability to differentiate 'just jokes bro' and not is important.

They wouldn't have a growing audience if they weren't speaking to some disaffected and stifled segment of the left

They have less than 3000 Patreon supporters, far from nothing but I'd bet 2750 of those are in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Their appeal appears to be entirely located with upwardly mobile young people who'll be centrist Democrats in 10 years (or were 2.5 years ago).

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 24 June 2019 23:54 (four years ago) link

Of those 2750, 50+% are cumtown fans who want to be paypigs.

red scare is very entertaining imho. very funny to hear women in their late 20s early 30s making a living off podcasting shifting from talking about doing coke at verso loft party to how they want to be tradwives and we need the patriarchy back. loved the recent episode where they went to the zoo. their takes seem to deal with and are directed at a very narrow segment of the brooklyn media left or liberal actresses that post on twitter a lot, completely disconnected from reality, and are absurd and should be taken as seriously as their takes on astrology or climate change.

XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 00:08 (four years ago) link

so by the overlap i’m getting that red scare is where the young presumably left-isht howard stern fans are

mh, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 00:30 (four years ago) link

they have a lot of fans in the UK & Canada. I'm in Baltimore, and again, the diversity of people I know that have recently become fans is striking - from lifelong communists to committed young lefties to disengaged but reliable progressives. These are not gullible converts about to turn into McInnes or Peterson. Also, unlike JP, Red Scare is not surrounded by a toxic cult. I'd be concerned if people were modeling their lives after D&A like they do with JP and any of the IDW idiots, but they're not. Dasha talking about the joys of fainting in public or Anna going on and on about how hot the Boston Bomber is, no one is taking this as life advice, and they're not turning anyone over to the right wing. So if you think they suck, just don't listen to the show... something like Pod Save America or The Young Turks nauseates me, but they're not hard to avoid. it's not like when Howard was on terrestrial, or O&A for that matter, and they were inescapable, just in the air constantly.

The Zoo is my favorite episode of the show.

You’re vastly overestimating how much of a shit anyone in this thread cares about RS, no one’s gathering up pitchforks and torches. They only come up because of the Amber connection.

red scare are socially conservative reactionaries, their whole schtick is basically being contrarian to "trigger the sjws" (as those on the right say) except masquerading as leftist somehow. theyre very ridiculous people whose idiotic twitter antics are entertaining but only in a "enjoyable to see them get dunked on" way and i dont know how anyone could tolerate actually listening to their podcast. also worrying that "'leftist' except i think it's a real problem i'm not allowed to call someone a retarded faggot anymore" is enough of a thing to get them the sort of following they have

ufo, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 04:15 (four years ago) link

I'm suddenly beginning to get Michael Tracey vibe:(

but surely nothing can be as bad as him

anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:30 (four years ago) link

he has literally been on red scare, lol

Simon H., Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:39 (four years ago) link

I've realized my exposure to things like this is almost entirely predicated on if its on youtube or not. If its not on youtube I've never heard of it

anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:48 (four years ago) link

and sadly king grifter Michael tracky seems to pop up a lot on youtube

anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:49 (four years ago) link

yeah michael tracey and the red scare crew are big mutual fans

ufo, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 05:51 (four years ago) link

Being fans of Tracey is a giant red flag - in not being able to spot a grifter, as much as anything else

I sorta don't mind the Tim Tool's of this world, as they're obviously Right Wingers who've found a niche of pretending they are on the left, but those guys can't resist saying "classical liberal" and "the left left me" so they give themselves away. Dore is his own thing, just a genuinely dumb person. Tracey, idk, he's somehow the worst though, maybe its because he's not as dumb as Tool and Dore, or he gets some kinda credence from people that should know better?

anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 06:01 (four years ago) link

am I missing something here - RS has no youtube and 2618 followers on Soundcloud. No wonder I haven't heard of them. unless its bigger on another platform?

Chapo itself only has 19K on youtube and 34K on Soundcloud, I thought it was bigger?

anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 06:12 (four years ago) link

Yeah YouTube and soundcloud are not what most people access podcasts on.chapo have 30k people who pay them $5 a month

VAR me to the end of yawn (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 06:29 (four years ago) link

Whats their actual reach, in terms of numbers? Feel like the bigger lefty shows on youtube are like 500k-1M? right wing shows probably still dwarf that:(

I'm pretty YTcentric tho! I use soundcloud but only for music

anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 06:40 (four years ago) link

I think Will said something about a million listens a month - so probably 40k * 4 premium eps and 200k-ish each for the free ones?

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 06:48 (four years ago) link

getting credence from people who seemingly should know better is the most annoying part about tracey yeah

ufo, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 07:04 (four years ago) link

the other thing is the weird need for acceptance from right wingers, this bizarre need for "I hate lefties but this one guy is at least honest and believes in free speech and doesn't screech or have pink hair". thats the validation you want?

I'm absolutely 100% pro going on Fox, I don't think we should ignore their giant platform. Bernie was 100% right to go on, Kyle Kulinski and Katie Halper were 100% right to go on. I have zero problem with this, but dudes like Tracky and Greenwald just go on to shit on the left and do mutual ego massage with Tucker? They should have no credibility, and yet

anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 07:37 (four years ago) link

Greenwald is a weird case where he's never quite been 'on the left', merely being some sort of civil libertarian who has ended making a lot of the same criticisms of things as the left and sharing a lot of ground, but still with the occasional disagreement on ideological grounds and other weirder biases of his. i can't deny that he's done a lot of important work as a journalist but his personal views are a real mess

ufo, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 07:46 (four years ago) link

I hesitated in putting Greenwald there as he is more complicated and not a hack like Trackey. I feel like he's just drifted a bit towards what Tracey does. I shouldn't have put them in the same category

anvil, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 07:54 (four years ago) link

The new stories on Brazil were really good, but Greenwald is fucking awful and would at this point put Tracey in the same group as himself, so clearly we should do the same. Awful, awful hacks.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 10:24 (four years ago) link

Some of the stuff rs says with a seemingly strait face is obviously indefensible and just kind of dumb, like how can they miss the point this completely? but other times I find them quite interesting and funny.

being critical of some aspects of identity politics from a Marxist perspective doesn’t make them or nagle socially conservative.

dsb, Tuesday, 25 June 2019 12:09 (four years ago) link

way more going on in that nagle thread than "criticism of identity politics from a marxist perspective," which sounds like horseshit to me

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 12:47 (four years ago) link

then again i've found most recent leftist criticism of identity politics to be, at its core, anti-pc concern trolling, pretty sure everyone brought up itt recently has a real hard-on for hating political correctness

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2019 12:54 (four years ago) link

there's nothing Marxist or "dialectical" about the Nagle quote that was making the rounds about capitalism and cultural conservatism. It was roundly mocked and deserved to be.
