I tried Googling "longest overtime in World Cup Soccer" and couldn't find anything.

It's not overtime

Got your butt drank (Neanderthal), Monday, 24 June 2019 17:55 (four years ago) link

Probably because it's not called overtime.

Orpheus Knutt (Tom D.), Monday, 24 June 2019 17:55 (four years ago) link

(xp!)

Iirc per caek, referees completely make up the amount of added time

They probably won't do a 13 minute added time marathon in the immediate future because it would be embarrassing to VAR imo. It would damage confidence, in the sport, to see it,

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 24 June 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link

Sadly at work and can't watch this now. Don't think the decisions i've seen have been wrong, mostly, but VAR seems to encourage a pedantic emphasis on some types of infraction at the expense of context and any idea of intentionality. And it fucks with the flow of the game and encourages more dissent/nitpicking from the players. And the handball interpretation is just fucking silly now.

It's kinda messed up that this narrative has been allowed to dominate discussion of the actual football and i feel bad for falling into that too but it's aggravating and it does feel like it's operated in favour of the big teams more, no doubt cos they get fouled more iften but also because they're just better at gaming the rules as they stand.

Pretty 'hm' about all this in the end.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2019 17:59 (four years ago) link

Tom D., I don't really follow soccer. What is it called?

John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Monday, 24 June 2019 18:00 (four years ago) link

it's called bonus o'clock

The second half was a gritty slog.

Extra time.

VAR has moved us abruptly from a constructivist to a positivist interpretation of the rules. This is mainly because football administrators are generally a bit dim not very nuanced thinkers

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Monday, 24 June 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link

the additional time given at the end of a half of football (soccer) is called "injury time" or "added time". if the game ends in a draw (tie) and they play an extra 30 minutes of football (soccer) this is called "extra time" (this would be what is referred to as "overtime" in north american sporting parlance).

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Monday, 24 June 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link

Imo remove VAR and just have someone shoot tranquilizers at people inching offsides

Got your butt drank (Neanderthal), Monday, 24 June 2019 18:04 (four years ago) link

Oh, it's a British vs American English thing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overtime_(sports)

John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Monday, 24 June 2019 18:04 (four years ago) link

"context and any idea of intentionality" seems relevant wrt viewer/poster reactions as this tournament (as w/ world cups in general [also this is a net positive I should probably state]) has definitely hooked ppl who don't necessarily watch that much football

reading liveblogs etc which platform shouty dissenting voices for even the clearly correct decisions has a signal-to-noise effect as well I guess

Although what Jim in Vancouver says makes sense. I don't watch enough soccer games. Thanks dudes!

John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Monday, 24 June 2019 18:06 (four years ago) link

It's not really overtime though. Stoppage time is meant to make up for time lost due to injuries, substitutions, goal celebrating, but is still considered part of the half it occurs in.

The correct analogue for overtime are those two extra 15 minute periods when the game is tied after regulation in a tournament match

i think the issue with VAR is that in football lots of stuff that technically is not allowed happens and we expect it to be allowed to happen. we applaud a referee who lets a game flow, we hate one who inserts themselves into the game too much. with VAR this expected refereeing of flow, subjectivity and feeling is crushed like a butterfly on a wheel

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Monday, 24 June 2019 18:08 (four years ago) link

If it makes anybody feel better, we get terrible officiating decisions at twice the rate in MLS with VAR in tow.

Say "Ted Unkel" at a game or "Chris Penso" and get a free beer poured on your head

Answer: additional time

John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Monday, 24 June 2019 18:11 (four years ago) link

In Argentina stoppage time is known as "el tiempo de cangrejos inoportunos", the phrase popularised in the mid-2000s by Spanish-speaking Manchester United fans enamoured of the late-game ball retention skills of one Michael Carrick

This game's dull enough to be a Men's World Cup game.

Both squads combined for three shots, zero on frame. Riveting

Inevitable given the nature of the decisions to date and probably right within the new rules but it absolutely looked like she was trying to draw her arm into her body.
