yeah the way woj is reporting this the lakers are not gonna have a max slot salary. they might be better off using that space to sign some high level role players (3 and D wings, point guards).

i have absolutely zero confidence that they will identify the right players and sign them to appropriate contracts, so sign me up.

ha was thinking the same

lag∞n, Sunday, 16 June 2019 17:42 (four years ago) link

feel like lakers are walking a tighter rope than the warriors this past year. they seem committed to a 3-star team and idk who they can afford on min contracts. melo, pau, ty chandler? is smush parker still in the league?

hollow your fart (m bison), Sunday, 16 June 2019 17:48 (four years ago) link

I'm in no hurry to see the Lakers figure things out. They don't need a 3-star team, but I'm fine if they want to fixate on that and fill out their roster with second-stringers, broken vets and call ups from G League.

Warriors had 4 Allstar level dudes plus iggy and 55% boog. Lakers have a ton of work to do. Lebro is 35 this year and brow hasn’t proven he can log a full season of games which they are going to need. I think theiir best bet is to add a third all star but would love to see Pelinka take a swing at filling the cap space with randoms again lol.

big city slam (Spottie), Sunday, 16 June 2019 18:08 (four years ago) link

The Warriors arrived at that roster partly through excellent team management and player development, partly through blindingly good luck. By signing Curry to his second contract when his ankles were still a big question mark, they got a break-out GOAT at bargain basement rates. Not going to happen again any time soon.

Can they even afford him cap-wise?

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 16 June 2019 22:13 (four years ago) link

No unless he takes less. The other LA team makes so much more sense

big city slam (Spottie), Sunday, 16 June 2019 22:34 (four years ago) link

from what i can glean, i think there is a way if they delay the official trade until the end of july. the problem is with that no. 4 pick and idk if new orleans has to do what lakers want. im not clear but i think the lakers are assuming they can still make a full max slot with this delay.

hollow your fart (m bison), Sunday, 16 June 2019 22:55 (four years ago) link

yeah if new orleans wants to trade that pick i don’t think they could wait, also new orleans has no reason to do the lakers any favors now that the trade is public.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 16 June 2019 23:38 (four years ago) link

true, but maybe lal only does the deal with all the picks/swaps provided NOP comes through on the timing.

hollow your fart (m bison), Sunday, 16 June 2019 23:40 (four years ago) link

in any case, it pisses me off because Lebron/AD on any other team than the Lakers would be my favorite non-baseball thing to watch in sports. But it is the Lakers.

if he liked the raptors culture/team structure and wants to get out of canada, the clippers seem to be a good option

old cloud yells at man (voodoo chili), Monday, 17 June 2019 14:29 (four years ago) link

idk what kawhi has to gain with being on a team with AD and bron, especially considering his unrefined playmaking--he kinda needs the ball, and it's a waste to just turn him into the greatest 3&D wing of all time

old cloud yells at man (voodoo chili), Monday, 17 June 2019 14:30 (four years ago) link

I think they're gonna get Kemba. in which case, holy gravy, the Hornets aren't gonna win 20 games next season.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 17 June 2019 14:37 (four years ago) link

hornets are in a terrible spot bc if they dont offer him the supermax they will be terrible for a while but if they do and keep him they will be mediocre for a while

hollow your fart (m bison), Monday, 17 June 2019 14:45 (four years ago) link

yeah hornets aren't in great shape, do they have any guys with all star ceiling?

ciderpress, Monday, 17 June 2019 14:47 (four years ago) link

hard to say bc they do such a poor job developing their talent.

hollow your fart (m bison), Monday, 17 June 2019 14:49 (four years ago) link

lmao i cannot believe hornets were paying FIVE guys more than kemba last season, jesus christ

hollow your fart (m bison), Monday, 17 June 2019 14:50 (four years ago) link

Miles Bridges had a nice rookie year but he'd have to make quite a leap. maybe it could still happen for Malik Monk too, but I'm even less optimistic. and that's the end of the list of "promising" Hornets.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 17 June 2019 14:52 (four years ago) link

their payroll finally looks okay by 2021, and they might be able to get some decent players if they deal some expiring contracts, but daaaaaaamn they got batum on the books for two more years for over fitty million daaaaaaaaaaaaamn

hollow your fart (m bison), Monday, 17 June 2019 15:01 (four years ago) link

that could be the worst contract in the nba, non-wall division

old cloud yells at man (voodoo chili), Monday, 17 June 2019 15:06 (four years ago) link

absolutely, that last year is a player option which batum would be foolish to opt out of

hollow your fart (m bison), Monday, 17 June 2019 15:09 (four years ago) link

they're picking 12th too, and idk if there's a donovan mitchell lurking in this year's late lottery

old cloud yells at man (voodoo chili), Monday, 17 June 2019 15:10 (four years ago) link

there are always a couple of players that can be p special in the middle of the first round

hollow your fart (m bison), Monday, 17 June 2019 15:12 (four years ago) link

in retrospect, Charlotte definitely should have moved Kemba sometime in the past year when he was still fantastically underpaid and they could've maybe gotten some picks or young guys in return. the fact that they didn't would seem to suggest they are going to offer him the supermax, unless they just never thought he was going to qualify for it and now that his price tag has gotten even more exorbitant, they're going to back off. either way, I think sadly their best bet now is just to let him walk and start trying to rebuild from the ground up. they're constrained for a year or two more by these other bad deals but if they re-sign Kemba I don't see any path to them even getting into the top 4 or 5 of the East in that timeframe anyway, plus if Kemba got seriously hurt or just declined they'd have to hold off rebuilding even longer.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 17 June 2019 15:17 (four years ago) link

yeah, i can see that. rip the band-aid off.

but its mj the exec so theyre not gonna do good shit.

hollow your fart (m bison), Monday, 17 June 2019 15:21 (four years ago) link

xpost -- def true about missed opportunities, in four of the last five drafts Charlotte could have easily walked away with SGA, Mitchell, Myles Turner or Devin Booker, and Nurkic.

"CP3 just doesn't let anything go. He just keeps pestering and pestering.... Sometimes J has had enough -- and not just him. That's what makes CP3 a winner and also what keeps him from being a big-time winner. He's got to temper that."

big city slam (Spottie), Monday, 17 June 2019 15:39 (four years ago) link

"Chris wants to coach James," says a source familiar with the stars' dynamic. "James looks at him like, 'You can't even beat your man. Just shut up and watch me.'"

According to sources, Paul was also frustrated by what he perceived as Harden's tendency to ignore unglamorous details that impact winning -- such as moving when he gives up the ball to help spacing -- and wasn't shy about expressing those concerns.

i think jeremy lamb was their 2nd best player last season and he's a FA.

big city slam (Spottie), Monday, 17 June 2019 17:38 (four years ago) link

i think malik monk is a lost cause too. bridges could be good tho. but the outlook on the rest of that roster is dire.

CPS really IS going to be a fantastically shitty coach some day though. like all the worst parts of Skiles, Kidd, and Thibs blended together.
