Bizarre own goal there.

ShariVari, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:12 (four years ago) link

Totally crazy.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link

Incredibly soft pen.

ShariVari, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:28 (four years ago) link

Who'd have thought it?

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link

hoofing someone in the knee at full pelt has traditionally been frowned upon iirc ime. granted Norway would have got away with it sans VAR

Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:33 (four years ago) link

Delphine Cascarino snubbing the Irish to come on as sub for France

Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:44 (four years ago) link

Yeah, that's more clearly a penalty than the second Spanish one which was a similar offence.

Elitist cheese photos (aldo), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:48 (four years ago) link

Sucks, but we put up a decent fight and should beat SK to advance

abcfsk, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:54 (four years ago) link

Engen flicked the ball and caught the French player’s thigh as she jumped in. It wasn’t particularly dangerous play, it wasn’t deliberate and she seems to have got the ball. idk

ShariVari, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:58 (four years ago) link

is there supposed to be provision made for when a leg follows through after a clearance and connects w/ an opponent? feel like there isn't really but not dredging up any obvious comparable incidents rn

lot of ppl taking about a two-footed tackle by Torrent in the same incident, seemed like more of a block to me. still think a penalty is correct w/ the caveat of it being a bad advert for VAR all the same insofar as it reaffirms how many grey areas there are and always will be

Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 21:11 (four years ago) link

How did france look? Unlucky but figured it out? Evenly matched?

alomar lines, Thursday, 13 June 2019 03:18 (four years ago) link

thought france looked p good. norway did cause the odd problem on the flanks, i don't think the french full backs are particularly strong, but their CB pairing is great, not just renard but the #19 as well. diani had a spectacular first half down the right. not sure of the permeations of the draw but they looked solid last 4 prospects, although i didn't see either brasil's or england's opening games. wasn't that convinced by gauvin at CF but she did score.

didn't think the pen was soft.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 13:57 (four years ago) link

australia done more in the first ten mins here than they did in entire game vs italy

oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 16:14 (four years ago) link

var on a possible pen but thought there was a hanball in the build up to the incident

oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 16:22 (four years ago) link

no pen

oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 16:22 (four years ago) link

now that's what i would rate as a 'soft' penalty. marta scores.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 16:28 (four years ago) link

Fun half, aussies in dire straits but now there’s hope

abcfsk, Thursday, 13 June 2019 16:52 (four years ago) link

Equaliser, but both these teams look p ropey imo

oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 17:20 (four years ago) link

Crazy match. In a good way!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 June 2019 17:39 (four years ago) link

Australia showed good spirit but Brazil have been pathetic ( their second goal was sweet tho)

oscar bravo, Thursday, 13 June 2019 17:48 (four years ago) link

not sure China are especially great but they're v watchable

Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 13 June 2019 19:50 (four years ago) link

This BBC commentator is good imo?

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 13 June 2019 20:16 (four years ago) link

Offside given about 20 seconds after Scotland player (2 yards onside) receives the ball. Japan go down the other end and ping it straight over the keeper’s head into the net, 1-0 Japan

Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:27 (four years ago) link

Japan are far better and deserve the lead but yeah it was a total nonsense

imago, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:29 (four years ago) link

Scotland keeper is very bad?

Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:31 (four years ago) link

The game plan seems to be long floated diagonals which the lone striker has no chance of reaching, combined with not clearing the ball properly.

Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:34 (four years ago) link

Quality of defending only matched by quality of officiating

Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:37 (four years ago) link

didn't see their game vs england but scotland look total trash

oscar bravo, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:38 (four years ago) link

they were trash against england tbh, england should have been 4 up

imago, Friday, 14 June 2019 13:39 (four years ago) link

Instead they needed a dodgy penalty to win, innit.

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Friday, 14 June 2019 14:16 (four years ago) link

Wondergoal for Scotland 4 mins after should have been given a penalty for what was basically a Henry vs Ireland level handball in the current climate

Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 14:46 (four years ago) link

2-1, Scotland simultaneously shite and hard done by

Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 14:50 (four years ago) link

Well that's an improvement on the men's team - shite and not hard done by.

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Friday, 14 June 2019 17:15 (four years ago) link

for some reference for those not from scotland: i am 34 years old, attended school in scotland, went to a high school with 1500 pupils, the amount of girls/women my age or older i've known to play football is 1

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 14 June 2019 17:18 (four years ago) link

i imagine it's changed now, so hopefully we'll see continuous improvement

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 14 June 2019 17:19 (four years ago) link

how quickly we forget the lessons of gregory's girl

imago, Friday, 14 June 2019 17:34 (four years ago) link

This is a little harsh on Jamaica, who've played some neat stuff in the second half.

Michael Jones, Friday, 14 June 2019 17:42 (four years ago) link

Yeah, clinical stuff from Italy, but no way did that feel like a 5-0 game on the balance of play. Football, a cruel mistress etc. Hope Jamaica get a goal at least for their efforts, and against australia's dodge defence they might well.

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 14 June 2019 18:00 (four years ago) link

bbc min-by-min person having one

9 mins

Jamaica 0-0 Italy

Brilliant tackle.

Italy striker Barbara Bonansea tries to get the better of Allyson Swaby in the box, but the Jamaica defender makes an inch-perfect tackle.

No, no, no.

Why is this being checked?

It was a clean challenge.

30 mins later......

just seen the incident from this angle.

It's a stonewaller I'm afraid.

Allyson Swaby gets nowhere near it and it is Barbara Bonansea's own touch which takes the ball away.

oscar bravo, Friday, 14 June 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link

Many xps to Jim, literally exact same story for me - and she went on to play cricket for Scotland. Could’ve done with her in the goal today I reckon

Blandford Forum, Friday, 14 June 2019 18:25 (four years ago) link

Choppy match here.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 June 2019 19:27 (four years ago) link

was appreciating the radio-esque level of description on the BBC screening and it turns out it is just the 5 Live commentary

England pen, right call, ropey kick from Parris, decent save, rebound prob should have been turned in

yeah it's a bit mad to think about in retrospect. i remember telling someone here, my gf maybe, that girls didn't play football because it was a game for boys basically and them just looking at me like id time-travelled to canada from edwardian scotland

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:34 (four years ago) link

got a hypothetical question. where might a piratic individual stream these games since the shutdown of the reddit soccer stream sub?

watching the ones during the week at work using a colleague's login with their cable provider but have no means for the weekend

Aw yeah.

ShariVari, Saturday, 15 June 2019 13:44 (four years ago) link

Miedema pressure off it seems. But still feel Netherlands are too slow and static in getting the ball to their star players on top.

abcfsk, Saturday, 15 June 2019 14:45 (four years ago) link

canada should have so many goals
