Yeah i mean death to the great satan obv, but those were just silly. Of course, it could be that VAR were screaming at the ref to give those pens

Halfway-ish there

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 20:13 (four years ago) link

I mean...we're not talking Germany-Brazil 2014 or anything but I typed this tweet and sent it:

Can a World Cup referee use VAR to call up the 'stop stop he's already dead' GIF?

— Ned Raggett (@NedRaggett) June 11, 2019

And then I looked back on the feed and they scored another goal.

So I came here to comment, and while I was typing this, they scored ANOTHER goal.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 20:16 (four years ago) link

comin off like real bullies here tbh

let it be known that if usa wins 13-0 they will jinx themselves and lose the cup

boobie, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 20:49 (four years ago) link

Seriously though, wouldn't a WC with 16 teams make more sense? Bottom tier is cannon fodder, way beyond 'they'll lose but it's a good lesson'.

(13-0)

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 20:49 (four years ago) link

i honestly feel uncomfortable watching games like this, like please hammer

Yeah.. :-/

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 20:52 (four years ago) link

was the three minutes of stoppage time really necessary

mookieproof, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 20:53 (four years ago) link

Lol there was a quip about that from the Fox commentator about the possibility of goal differential coming into play later in the tournament

boobie, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 20:54 (four years ago) link

Damn it, I had £1.50 on 14-0.

fwiw Thailand have beaten local minnows by comparable margins so don’t feel too sorry for them.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 20:57 (four years ago) link

Sprinting to keep it in play at 13-0 in the 90th minute. The coach leaping up to pump fists and high five for the 13th goal. Extremely small time

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 20:57 (four years ago) link

did they even sub anyone

Not feeling sorry for them as much as I'm wondering why (how?) they're here at all. I think USA's display proves how fast women's football is developing. With a fast evolution, the margin between the highest standard and mediocrity is enormous. Germany (men) beat Estonia 8-0 tonight; same diff, but it happened in qualification.

(I put € 1.00 on 15-0 just after half time)

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 21:03 (four years ago) link

The thirteenth goal was the culmination of about four minutes of exclusively trying to get the ball to their ageing legend and succeeding, tbf

too much fucking perspective

The United States Women's National Team has scored 13 World Cup goals today.

I noticed the scoreline thanks to Ned's tweets at 8-0. I was leaving my desk for a work function and in the time it took me to walk from my desk to the function, they had scored two goals.

brigadier pudding (DJP), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 21:26 (four years ago) link

omg FIFA don't want it to be ten. It will still be ten

I imagine FIFA will be eyeing viewing figures nervously after this.

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 21:29 (four years ago) link

for all you fancying australia before this tournament, they needed a 91st minute goal to draw with thailand in the recent asia cup

imago, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 21:46 (four years ago) link

and even then only won on penalties

imago, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 21:47 (four years ago) link

seeing players go wild over scoring rout-number goals against obviously inferior opposition is weird but I feel like that's a matter of unspoken etiquette rather than anything more innate, and that you could make an only partway contrarian case for the polite smile and handshake to mark your ninth against minnows being the more arrogant gesture

Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 22:18 (four years ago) link

Yeaahhhhh, I think that's more than partway contrarian tbh.

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 22:24 (four years ago) link

i liked the old italian football thing of when you were 5 up or so just totally taking the foot of the gas and having an uncompetitive snooze fest for the remainder of the game

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 22:44 (four years ago) link

I'm sympathetic to the argument that that you best respect opponents by always competing your hardest, but even i thought the us celebrations were verging on the sociopathic

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 23:53 (four years ago) link

Iirc that italian football thing traditionally kicks in at 1-0 up

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 23:53 (four years ago) link

Commentator just said that the ref for this Nigeria vs South Korea game actually played for Russia in a previous world cup which is p cool.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 13:04 (four years ago) link

Quite the own goal from Korea there. Shame because they'd started well.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 13:30 (four years ago) link

xp North Korean ref for Cameroon v Canada did likewise

Screwfix's favourite disco albums (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 14:08 (four years ago) link

Bizarre own goal there.

Who'd have thought it?

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link

hoofing someone in the knee at full pelt has traditionally been frowned upon iirc ime. granted Norway would have got away with it sans VAR
