xpost I almost brought up how a lot of episodes remind of Until the End of the World because of the "soundtrack/actor/location showcase." The videogame episode in Brazil was disconcerting.

Idk if Reznor was really “bullied” into adding guitars in the 90s.

I’ve only seen the Vipers ep of the first season and if that’s the high point I’m worried about the rest.

circa1916, Sunday, 9 June 2019 23:20 (four years ago) link

Reznor getting his first No. 1 with "Old Town Road" is the best Black Mirror episode.

I find myself very anti-Topher Grace so I will probably not watch that episode.

he's fine in it! no aggravated vocal mannerisms or anything

That ep was bad and hated but I liked it and felt the denouement was great

Really dug the Miley episode, with so much packed into an hour and such a satisfying final 15 minutes.

TBH, I'd rather see a Philomena Cunk Moments of Wonder segment devoted to epidemiology.

*has to admit that this new season looks pretty dope after the show kinda fell off before the hiatus*

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 31 May 2023 19:37 (ten months ago) link

One of these episodes features… David Shields?!? Which seems appropriate.

Interesting angle, two episodes into this season. (It’s an angle they played with a bit before, but they’re leaning harder into it.)

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 17 June 2023 03:22 (ten months ago) link

First episode is terrible, second is fucking traumatising wtf

half the population ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (gyac), Sunday, 18 June 2023 14:17 (ten months ago) link

Probably the most fucked up since Shut Up and Dance

half the population ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (gyac), Sunday, 18 June 2023 14:20 (ten months ago) link

Demon 79 is the only good one imo and Anjana Vasan is superb in it.

calzino, Sunday, 18 June 2023 14:50 (ten months ago) link

Beyond the Sea was so dull I can't even remember what happened at the end of it.

calzino, Sunday, 18 June 2023 14:55 (ten months ago) link

The second episode was so good (and yes, emotionally brutal) that it enters the “best Black Mirror episodes) conversation. They haven’t fucked with me like that in a while.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 18 June 2023 15:04 (ten months ago) link

I’m only partway through Beyond The Sea so no comment on that one yet.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 18 June 2023 15:04 (ten months ago) link

It’s not the twist itself, it’s the absolute calm that one character with full knowledge of the events relates them back, and on the other hand the other person with a partial understanding of it is a complete shell. The way Pia moves from being a real person to a face on the screen, distant and unreal. It’s so great but it was a lot.

half the population ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (gyac), Sunday, 18 June 2023 15:06 (ten months ago) link

it reminded me of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer in the sense that I didn't enjoy anything about it and feel like I'd have felt better if I hadn't watched it.

calzino, Sunday, 18 June 2023 15:12 (ten months ago) link

Weirdly, this is one of those shows where many of the best episodes are episodes I could never watch again or recommend in good conscience to people who would never watch Black Mirror or emotionally/psychologically harsh films or shows.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 18 June 2023 15:18 (ten months ago) link

Example: White Deer.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 18 June 2023 15:18 (ten months ago) link

xp otm

The fictive stuff in Joan Is Awful reminded me very much of The Invisibles towards the end but the execution was terrible. Like I got what they were going for, but no.

half the population ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (gyac), Sunday, 18 June 2023 15:30 (ten months ago) link

Beyond the Sea was slow but good, I wouldn’t call it boring! You can see what’s going to happen a mile away when David’s a little too interested in Lana being bored in the country, and obviously I love some good 2001 references. The pace of it reflects the whole horror of it, being helpless to do anything in a tragedy because of distance, either physical or emotional. Incredibly bleak ending, even for this series.

half the population ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (gyac), Sunday, 18 June 2023 15:47 (ten months ago) link

demon 79 was bad

johnny crunch, Sunday, 18 June 2023 23:02 (ten months ago) link

I enjoyed the unshamed puerility of "Joan is Awful", it felt like the closest Black Mirror has gotten to a TV Go Home listing. But, yeah, it was maybe slightly too silly.

Also enjoyed "Loch Henry" but you could see the twist coming from a mile away esp. because of the meta casting (unless that was the point). The pub owner's son was very funny. But I don't think it ratcheted up the tension quite as tightly as it could've.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 19 June 2023 00:12 (ten months ago) link

“Joan is Awful” was good. “Demon 79” was really good. Haven’t seen the others yet.

formerly abanana (dat), Monday, 19 June 2023 04:27 (ten months ago) link

E3 is somehow heavier than E2, though I prefer E2. E4 is shaping up to be very strong.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 19 June 2023 17:33 (ten months ago) link

I kind of wish this season were 100% parasitic/morally fried Hollywood bullshit, but that would wear out its welcome.

the manwich horror (Neanderthal), Monday, 19 June 2023 19:53 (ten months ago) link

Calz is right, demon 79 is the best one. As a millennial who grew up in the tmz era, I should have loved e4, but it was the most forgettable.

half the population ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (gyac), Monday, 19 June 2023 20:31 (ten months ago) link

I liked the idea of e4 a lot but it was lacking … something.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 19 June 2023 20:33 (ten months ago) link

I found Demon 79 the most emotive episode and appreciated the lols with the graphic violence and Anjana Vasan's performance as a "corruptible" downtrodden good person was just perfect.

calzino, Monday, 19 June 2023 21:02 (ten months ago) link

It was totally great, I was so sold on the ending after the last one was prevented from happening. I suspect you felt the same, calz!

half the population ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (gyac), Monday, 19 June 2023 21:30 (ten months ago) link

you only had to smash a fucking fascist tory cnut in the heed with a claw hammer!
