var strikes again. italy 'goal' off a beautiful through ball ruled out on the tightest of margins. i assume australia are favourites here but italy have started well.

pen to aus

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 11:20 (four years ago) link

scored on rebound

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 11:22 (four years ago) link

Offside is fucking ridiculous now. May as well ban forward passes.

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:00 (four years ago) link

terrible defending but that's a calm dribble and finish from the italy #11.
probably jinx her but the italian goalie has looked impressively assured.

Deep women's football cut: Sam, Kerr Ladies

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:25 (four years ago) link

feel like the nu-var era we are in where ref assistants can't flag for offside until the attacking phase is completed is changing the game in some fundamental way that i can't articulate but am uneasy with.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:34 (four years ago) link

Oh fucking hell. That one was slightly offside tbf, but even a legit close offside now feels like its ruining the game.

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:40 (four years ago) link

australia play with such a stupidly high line that every game they play will have like 5 var reviews.
tbf all the initial decisions by the on field officials have been proved correct. i'd probably prefer the law to be if any of the attackers body is onside then they are onside rahter than if any of their body is offside then they're offside.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:51 (four years ago) link

italy winner 5th minute of stoppage time!!

oscar bravo, Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:53 (four years ago) link

Well deserved!

ShariVari, Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:55 (four years ago) link

Yay! As noted by the bbc commentator, australia didn't seem to get the 'no diving in womens football' memo

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 12:57 (four years ago) link

Glad I caught the last ten minutes of that.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 June 2019 13:02 (four years ago) link

Barbara Bonansea was destined for a great tournament

abcfsk, Sunday, 9 June 2019 13:07 (four years ago) link

Think Australia will win the next two and go through but

a) a bit sloppy/nervous today
b) think they're slightly overrated in general / have had messy behind the scenes stuff disrupt preparations
c) their troubles in defense are well known

abcfsk, Sunday, 9 June 2019 13:07 (four years ago) link

Not a bad match between Brazil and Jamaica but that second Christiane goal probably seals it.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 June 2019 14:41 (four years ago) link

If this hour long BBC puff piece on 'England's World Cup Lionesses' doesn't fire up the Scottish nation to get 100% behind Scotland's women's team I don't know what can.

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Sunday, 9 June 2019 14:53 (four years ago) link

... ah, they aren't showing it in Scotland! Wise move.

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Sunday, 9 June 2019 14:55 (four years ago) link

wow bbc inflicting y'all, hope solo in an evening gown

alomar lines, Sunday, 9 June 2019 15:56 (four years ago) link

Is that where Hope ended up? Figures.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 June 2019 16:09 (four years ago) link

fun and frenetic so far

Excellent pen

ShariVari, Sunday, 9 June 2019 16:14 (four years ago) link

Football - 22 people chase the ball for 90 minutes and at some point someone gets the ball tanned off their arm in the box.

Blandford Forum, Sunday, 9 June 2019 16:22 (four years ago) link

England on a completely different planet to Scotland here

imago, Sunday, 9 June 2019 16:23 (four years ago) link

Challop: every penalty given in the tournament so far has been a dreadful decision.

Elitist cheese photos (aldo), Sunday, 9 June 2019 16:24 (four years ago) link

In retrospect they should probably have given the BBC a proper studio rather than expecting them to make themselves heard over the half time noise.

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 June 2019 17:19 (four years ago) link

Well this is getting interesting...

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 June 2019 17:41 (four years ago) link

xxp even Spain's second penalty? I agree that the handball situation is getting out of, er, hand

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 9 June 2019 21:17 (four years ago) link

Was that the one with the sending off? If so, especially that one - poor, scuffed clearance and follows through way too far but her leg is fully extended and the Spaniard runs into it.

35 minutes into Japan / Argentina and I don’t recall anyone having a shot.

ShariVari, Monday, 10 June 2019 16:36 (four years ago) link

Argentina with an impressive commitment to a 10-0-0 formation

imago, Monday, 10 June 2019 17:13 (four years ago) link

For all that, that might have been the most emotional end to a 0-0 draw at that level I've seen in a long while.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 10 June 2019 17:59 (four years ago) link

I remember their goalie from the it 2007 11-0 defeat to Germany. Think she scored two own goals in that one.

imago, Monday, 10 June 2019 18:01 (four years ago) link

Don't know if anyone mentioned it on ILX at the time

Japan really Spained that up

Bash Street Kids: Endgame (Bananaman Begins), Monday, 10 June 2019 18:19 (four years ago) link

love when the dutch fans break out the verdi. holland starting like they're a goal down with only 5 mins left to score

oscar bravo, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 13:05 (four years ago) link

cracking start. lovely strike off the bar for new zealand. right-to-left diagonals working for holland.

oscar bravo, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 13:13 (four years ago) link

Feel like the key to breaking thru here for the Dutch will be getting the full backs much further free to free up space for Martin's and Van de sanden. But can see why they're reluctant because NZ are playing two up top and look dangerous on the counter.

oscar bravo, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 13:40 (four years ago) link

Japan vs Argentina was dire yesterday but thought the Japan #3 was really good.

oscar bravo, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 13:41 (four years ago) link

That is an horrific miss from holland

oscar bravo, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 13:45 (four years ago) link

Some big whiffs

abcfsk, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 13:58 (four years ago) link

This can't possibly end without goals

abcfsk, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 14:30 (four years ago) link

And you were right. But what a crazy match.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 16:18 (four years ago) link

don't fancy chile's chances here. sweden are asking all the questions

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 16:38 (four years ago) link

Same barrage with no result so far

abcfsk, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 17:09 (four years ago) link

the USA are going to have to give us all the goals we've been missing out on. or will Thailand offer similar resistance?

imago, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 17:14 (four years ago) link

And now...rain.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 17:33 (four years ago) link

And with that game on pause Fox has taken to a LOT of USWNT bus shots and groups of fans.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 17:52 (four years ago) link

Hold on, a football game got stopped because it was raining?

John Harris is a Guardian columnist (Tom D.), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 18:25 (four years ago) link

giving the Dutch keeper WOTM in the 86th minute is tempting fate

wot's the tea mum? (not beef again) (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 7 July 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

Not really too bad that VAR spotted a chest-high assault that the ref missed. Xp

Hope theh snub Trump now

or something, Sunday, 7 July 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

Yeah that challenge really should have been picked up by the ref in the first place. Stonewall peno

Rapinoe's World Cup has to be up there with the greatest all-time talk-and-back-it-up performances in sports history. Tangle with a President and win World Cup and MVP? A socially conscious athlete pilloried for patriotism? No one will *ever* be Ali, but there's Ali in Rapinoe.

Rose Lavelle looks like an adorable high school student yet plays like a complete badass. I like how she wears her socks pulled up over her knees.
