Madonna's music is bad and Madonna in general is an embarrassingly lame human being
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 20 June 2019 23:18 (four years ago) link
I feel that way about many (most?) pop stars, but not Madonna
― Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 20 June 2019 23:38 (four years ago) link
She means a lot to my spouse but, yeah, I'm often mystified by what people seem to get out of most of her work, especially since the 80s. "Live to Tell" is cool, though.

Some great singles and a solid album (Ray of Light). Good enough in my book.

I’d rather listen to the worst Limp Bizkit album than the best Joe Satriani album. But I’d also prefer to pour mercury from a broken thermometer into my ears than to listen to a full Satriani album.

brian eno should retire.
― The Pingularity (ledge), Friday, 21 June 2019 07:41 (four years ago) link
Hard to say whether that's a genuinely controversial opinion, Moka. I'm on board with it, though.
― pomenitul, Friday, 21 June 2019 07:45 (four years ago) link
Indeed. It is probably more controversial to think that "The Crush of Love" is a classic single, which I do.
― All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Friday, 21 June 2019 11:26 (four years ago) link
Wouldn't call it classic, but it's one of his better pieces, yeah.

Madonna is a better songwriter than Paul McCartney.

I feel like there has been a drift over the last couple of decades where consensus has gone from "every note Bon Jovi ever recorded is completely worthless" to "some Bon Jovi tracks / LPs are actually good" and I cant help feeling that this is a symptom of a greater moral decline.

Joe Satriani and many of his ilk of late 80s guitar mag shredders are underrated

it isn't that their music is unbearable, it's just that if their whole discography were to be deleted, nothing of value would have been lost. i don't get why people would use their limited time on earth listening to them when there is other music available.

They should make an alternate reality movie about what the world would be like if there never was a Bon Jovi.

Sounds fine, would be a bit annoying explaining why they were bad, but I'd get over it.

We'd have a thread called "Every huge artist has their "For Those About to Rock-- We Salute You" - a huge event album that ultimately feels a bit hollow & signals a career decline"

this whole exchange gives me life. I don't hate the Beatles nor do I hate Bon Jovi, but I'd rather hear Bon Jovi than the Beatles about 99% of the time. of course, i'd rather not hear either of them because they're both kind of trash, but at least Bon Jovi is real trash.

More or less, it seems to me over recent years that:
- ilx needs to be convinced they shouldn't automatically hate an indie act they heard about- ilx needs to be convinced they shouldn't automatically like a pop act they heard about
Just an impression I have; I don't have enough citations to back that up in a debate at the moment
― Evan, Monday, 9 December 2019 17:59 (four years ago) link
What about indie pop?
― pomenitul, Monday, 9 December 2019 18:00 (four years ago) link
Under my anecdotal premise I guess I feel like that leans towards "automatically like" generally as well? IDK
― Evan, Monday, 9 December 2019 18:21 (four years ago) link
Speaking purely personally, I have heard enough indie guitar music to last me a lifetime, and any new music of this sort has to be either very good or very novel to not seem like a total waste of time.

― imago, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 14:22 (four years ago) link
I was convinced I'd get more pushback for making generalizations like this. Was inspired by the Car Seat Headrest discussions. Everyone on ilx seems to want to give that guy a swirly.
― Evan, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 16:42 (four years ago) link
the phrase "indie landfill" came about for a reason. the bar there is so, so low compared to pop music, which is as brutal and cutthroat a competition as one gets.

"moondance" would be a much, much better record if only van morrison had had the good sense to excise the title track
― budo jeru, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 23:29 (three years ago) link
which is trash
I think it's a good album with or without "Moondance". Not quite as good as "Tupelo Honey" though (the album, not the song).
― o. nate, Wednesday, 13 May 2020 00:41 (three years ago) link
I enjoy the song, but it is a bit corny and out of place on there.

I like ketchup but a tablespoon of it is enough. Queen is, like, an entire cup of ketchup.

Because I don't want to derail the Jane's Addiction thread…
('Three Days'/'Then She Did' are awesome when PF holds his peace btw.)
Come to think of it, the (long) 1980s are probably the decade in rock I struggle with the most, to this day, and I wonder whether this is typical of post-gen X-ers/pre-zoomers such as myself. There are countless classics from that era that I do enjoy more often than not but that I've never wholeheartedly embraced, such as…
The FallGuns n' RosesHüsker DüJudas PriestMetallicaMinutemenMotörheadMy Bloody ValentineNick Cave & The Bad SeedsPrinceRushThe SmithsTalking HeadsXTCetc.
I don't dislike any of these acts per se and there's enough amazing music between them that I could never relinquish, but I still would never think of including them in my personal canon. Whereas the period going from, say, 1967 to 1977 is evergreen in my mind.
I guess I never completely overcame the 'the 80s were the worst decade for music ever' mentality that was somehow drilled into me at a young age.
