k ftr, i haven't heard everything he has produced, just around 7 tracks, none of which did anything for me. thanks for the suggestions; i knew there had to be more awesomeness out there

Tavira is his best work in my book.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 13 June 2009 01:17 (fourteen years ago) link
tensnake's new one- in the end (i want to cry)- is fuckin great if you ask me. also every track on the 'keep believin' ep is way solid, esp "tavira"
― psychgawsple, Saturday, 13 June 2009 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link
and "congolal" is a one of my all-time favorite nu-balearic tunes
― psychgawsple, Saturday, 13 June 2009 01:32 (fourteen years ago) link
"Tavira" is pretty astonishing; it's also a track that seems purpose-built for use in Aeroplane sets.
I also loved Tensnake's "Around The House" from way back when, though that was in a different style to his current stuff.
― Tim F, Saturday, 13 June 2009 01:33 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah, i thought "around the house" was pretty nice but had none of that wide-eyed euphoria that's all over those two remixes. i'll be checking out those tracks yall mentioned.
― guammls (QE II), Saturday, 13 June 2009 02:38 (fourteen years ago) link
ok am late on this but that mixmag mix, slaying meee
so upset i will prob be missing them in aus - i missed them the last time they were here as well.

Roz, u haven't been on this thread before now? I feel like this stuff is so up your alley, it's a travesty nobody brought it to your attention before now.

no no i love aeroplane - i just haven't been on ilm much the past few months and missed out on all the great mixes.
you're right though, this shiz is totally made for me :)
― Roz, Sunday, 14 June 2009 03:52 (fourteen years ago) link
You and me, both!
They've got that OOOOOOOH SOO SMOOOOOOOTH phasey keyboard sound I haven't heard since Duran Duran. They make me want to sit on a yacht in a white bikini and bird of paradise makeup and sip odd pink cocktails. soooo good.
(though have discovered: it's their original mix of Kilometre that makes me melt, not the Italo 84 mix)
Though I keep forgetting that song has an orgasm in it - I keep getting the juju eyes from people when I dj coz I keep playing orgasm songs without realising it. (I think I had two of them last night. oops.)
― Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 14 June 2009 07:16 (fourteen years ago) link
do you mean that there's 2 versions of their remix for kilometer??
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 14 June 2009 08:01 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah, I thought they were the same thing until I accidentally downloaded the wrong one!
I don't actually know what the difference is apart from 4 seconds longer. In fact, listening to them note for note next to one another... I think there's just slightly more step delay on the non-Italo one and the EQ is slightly different? I'm not even trusting my ears at this point. Maybe they're the same and it's entirely psychological that I view the non-Italo one as more "swhirly" and less "crisp"
no idea.
― Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 14 June 2009 12:31 (fourteen years ago) link
http://www.discogs.com/Sebastien-Tellier-Kilometer/release/1686480
seems like its probably psychological since unless aeroplane released a bootleg of the non-'italo 84' version, this is all youve got...
― rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Sunday, 14 June 2009 13:14 (fourteen years ago) link
I got them both off iTunes, so they're both perfectly legal. Huh. A mystery!
― Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 14 June 2009 13:17 (fourteen years ago) link
i was driving the other day with nothing to listen to, threw in an old mix cd i made a year and a half ago, and their fool for love remix came on. i can't remember if it's gotten much hype on here, but it's so great. much more in style with what they were coming out with originally
― space cowboy (san frandisco), Wednesday, 17 June 2009 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah, that remix seems underrated.

the das pop rmx was the first thing of theirs that i heard and i still rate it as one of the best things they've done - love those stupid huge italo keyboards

some of those remixes had better contain nothing of the originals :/
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 09:36 (fourteen years ago) link
also it's mixed! which the title sorta led me to not expect
― psychgawsple, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 09:41 (fourteen years ago) link
xpost- only original i've heard is fever ray, but ya still there are divisive indie-electro-pop vocals all over this thing
― psychgawsple, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 09:49 (fourteen years ago) link
fever ray is the one which is other way round - love the og but kinda don't want to hear another rex the dog remix in 2009 - you just know it's gonna be so formulaic
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 09:52 (fourteen years ago) link
aeroplane has always been remixers of mediocre or worse songs. see: "paris", "circuit", "now til 69", "fool for love". hell, almost all of the songs that got remixed by them are mediocre!
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 10:58 (fourteen years ago) link
But that's the thing - they take mediocre, boring songs and make them AMAZING.
I don't think I'd want to hear them tackle a song that was already good.
― Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 11:01 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah, that's also my point. it's a reply for lex's statement: "some of those remixes had better contain nothing of the originals :/"
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 11:13 (fourteen years ago) link
That's overstating it a bit, no? "William's Blood"!
― Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 13:01 (fourteen years ago) link
OK, OK, point taken - but I'd not heard the original of that when I heard the remix.

Sort've meh on that new mix, seems a bit Aeroplane-by-the-numbers.
― Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 18:42 (fourteen years ago) link
^^^ i was of this thinking for a while too but the kilometer mix has a way of wedging itself in your brain and making you submit to its charms
― psychgawsple, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:09 (fourteen years ago) link
oh u were talkin baout the june mix weren't u
i dig the first couple of tunes a bunch, that lindstrom remix of doves is pretty epic. this mix isn't really too far from the mixmag one imo, maybe slightly less exciting because there are no actual aeroplane mixes on here but it's still pretty fun stuff
― psychgawsple, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:31 (fourteen years ago) link
I like the mixmag one, it's a total populist thing and full of obvious choices, but then of course populism is one of Aeroplane's strenghts. Very hard to get sick of "Now Till 69", "Kilometer"...even "Paris", which has well and truly been played to death by now.
― Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 20:37 (fourteen years ago) link
thanks for the link mr. me too!
― Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 25 June 2009 07:12 (fourteen years ago) link
Nope, even Aeroplane couldn't make Florence and the Machine listenable, whoever did the remix. Oh well.
Just clicked in this thread to see what the heck the mega-building spacerock explosion song was at the end. This is pretty Epic, in like, the Beowulf sense of the word.
(And as an aside, I was completely disappointed when I heard the original Kilometre. It's awful.)
― Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Friday, 26 June 2009 14:59 (fourteen years ago) link
haha kate i wouldnt be surprised if we made a venn diagram of "the musical taste of many people on this thread" and "the musical taste of kate" the overlap would be "aeroplane remixes"

fwiw i dig the og kilometre something fierce, and i really love the f&the machine edit (thats leo zero from amo1)

I think you'd be surprised. If we're going to be completely honest about it, a lot of the intersection comes from the bit labelled "Erol Alkan cosmic space glam disco with some beats on". And don't forget, Electronica is where a lot of the dronerock/shoegaze kids wibbled off to after the whole nu-gaze thing went tits up. (James Holden after all has more in common with the original shoegaze aesthetic than, say, Barney Rubble Motorcycle Club ever did.)
I need to know more about this Joakim : Nebula Laughter track. It's totally spacerock, especially the last few minutes, and I want some more of that to put next to my Silver Apples records.
