"scarecrow" is really one of his absolute best songs

Also my introduction to Calvin Johnson's voice, and it was years before I heard Beat Happening and discovered that it belonged to an actual human and wasn't Beck's voice pitched way down with some crazy effect.

love, love, love this one. i think more songs placed off this album than any other iirc.

So sad I missed the opportunity to vote in this. Close to my heart Beck will never be (ctrl+f's "scientology", 0 results. For one) but boy has he sound tracked my youth, and then some.

The whole concept of Mellow Gold is that it's like a satanic K-tel record that's been found in a trash dumpster, quite matter-of-factly. A few people have molested it and slept with it and half-swallowed it before spitting it out. Someone played poker with it, someone tried to smoke it. Then the record was taken to Morocco and covered with hummus and tabouli. Then it was flown back to a convention of water-skiers, who skied on it and played Frisbee with it. Then the record was put on the turntable, and the original K-Tel album had reached a whole new level. I was just taking that whole Freedom Rock feeling, you understand.

Was amazed to discover recently that the Odelay cover is an actual photo of a dog, and not a pic of some weird sculpture or model.

I don't know Beck that well so I didn't vote, but really enjoyed the rollout, images, and discussion. I have to express my puzzlement, though, that no one voted for my favorite Beck thing, the video for "Deadweight." Those first three Director Series DVDs, and Gondry's especially, seemed to come from an alternate universe where the '90s were an era of nonpareil pop culture creativity.

Deadweight would’ve ranked very high on my ballot but I haven’t really liked anything he’s done since Mutations and I don’t even really like that one much

not sure if i want to do a review of the show, i will say this: his newer songs were the best songs in this environment for some odd reason. Cage the Elephant is not a good pairing for Beck as pretty much everyone came for them and not Beck.
