in other news, Swanyard has some high points but a LOT of track duplication. Disappointing overall, and probably should have been a single CD, but hey why not release everything even if it's multiple versions (some tracks are repeated three times).

I had no idea who Coil were at the time and couldn't decide if I was meant to find it funny or not.

I had somehow missed that there are two competing versions of the Black Light District reissue, the Infinite Fog version has a bonus track but the Dais version supposedly has better sound.

stolen and contaminated songs is up there with their best. superior to LSD imo. my cd had disc rot so super happy to have it on vinyl now.

As usual with these reissues the most pressing question for me is who, if anyone, authorized it and who stands to benefit financially.

i presume danny hyde is authorising it though of course it is debateable whether he is morally able to do that. there is nobody / nothing to stop him though.

The fact he refers to this music as "content" is already enough to turn stomachs.

Finally getting around to hearing Stolen & Contaminated Songs and it's great (and much better than the tumbleweeds blowing through this thread would suggest). The "Love's Secret Domain" demo uses the same vocal take (at least I am 95% sure it does), and there are few vocals elsewhere (though the answering machine message on "Who'll Fall" is chilling - does anyone know whose voice that is?). I've never been 100% clear about the division of labor in Coil, though I assume it's similar to a lot of sorta He's-the-DJ-I'm-The-Rapper type duos (ie Pet Shop Boys), and that Sleazy handles the lion's share of the production work. I'm sure there are people who know how it breaks down and who does what, but this is actually the first time I've thought about it.

One other observation after one listen: I think people forget how funny Coil can be. For example, see "Wrim Wram Wrom," whose tantalizingly inscrutable title appears to be inspired not by some esoteric Gnostic evocation but by the phonetic rendering of the synth sounds used on the track! That's my take, anyway.

Yes, it is wonderful. The answering machine message on "Who'll Fall" was from a good friend of theirs but I don't think they ever revealed exactly who it was.

Sleazy was responsible for the vast majority of the production work; in the earlier days i think probably 100%. Around the LSD era Balance was perhaps a bit more involved with the production work. And yes, Coil had so much humour, something that I feel passes some of their more po faced fans by completely.

I actually really like these compilations (I got them back in the day), they give a good overview of the band's output for those (like me) who find a whole album's worth of Coil a bit much.

Sara Dale's Sensual Massage was a delightful erotic video with a mystic soundtrack by Coil. Quite unusual for the band dreamy ambient, almost spa-relaxed soft harmonies, bland tribal rhythms, chimes, and birdsong but still with dark mysterious and inimitable Coil musick's charm.
However, the second part of the album explores more rhythmic structures that remind 'Gay Man's Guide...' soundtrack.

Besides the OST recordings, the edition includes bonus tracks from the "Basilisk prod.'s" era: “Theme From Blue”, and grandiose "The Hills Are Alive" so badly wanted on vinyl.
