So strange to re-read this thread after all these years. The "little one" I mention in my posts is now a 15-year-old about to finish her freshman year of high school. Time flies.

Coil live 6th April 2003 – All Tomorrow’s Parties – Camber Sands, UK

Found in a box of old DV tapes, here's a video that Sleazy gave me permission to film from the side of the stage during their performance at ATP. Edit/sync by Mika Hallbäck Vuorenpää. https://t.co/XOb08UPVkA pic.twitter.com/63EjnxpaID

cool, two days after "...And The Ambulance Died In His Arms"

in other news, Swanyard has some high points but a LOT of track duplication. Disappointing overall, and probably should have been a single CD, but hey why not release everything even if it's multiple versions (some tracks are repeated three times).

"No really, THIS one is the variant!"

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 June 2019 14:47 (four years ago) link

Oh cool, I was at that ATP performance. I mostly remember Balance repeatedly asking them to turn the volume up.

Ward Fowler, Friday, 7 June 2019 14:49 (four years ago) link

I was at that ATP and saw that performance.
I had no idea who Coil were at the time and couldn't decide if I was meant to find it funny or not.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 7 June 2019 17:22 (four years ago) link

I had somehow missed that there are two competing versions of the Black Light District reissue, the Infinite Fog version has a bonus track but the Dais version supposedly has better sound.

Thighpaulsandra has made another live show available, Copenhagen 2002 -- supposedly digital only, free download:

reissue of stolen and contaminated songs might have solved the problem of which coil record to get on lp for me - horse rotovator is just way too expensive

please allow me to say that one more time

clouds (peanutbuttereverysingleday), Tuesday, 7 January 2020 04:36 (four years ago) link

stolen and contaminated songs is up there with their best. superior to LSD imo. my cd had disc rot so super happy to have it on vinyl now.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 7 January 2020 12:50 (four years ago) link

As usual with these reissues the most pressing question for me is who, if anyone, authorized it and who stands to benefit financially.

van dyke parks generator (anagram), Tuesday, 7 January 2020 13:11 (four years ago) link

i presume danny hyde is authorising it though of course it is debateable whether he is morally able to do that. there is nobody / nothing to stop him though.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 7 January 2020 13:25 (four years ago) link

me too, although I was able to rip it without issues. and yeah, it's a great one.

current commute CD is Queens Of The Circulating Library, it's been at least 15 years since I listened to it.

same here. must dig it out.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 7 January 2020 17:00 (four years ago) link

i think we are now fully into completely ripping the piss territory.

stirmonster, Friday, 17 January 2020 17:30 (four years ago) link

yeah Hyde could just be making "new" tracks himself at this point

this is like outtakes from Swanyard, sad lol

tbf the Coil remix of Scorn he mentions was pretty great

The fact he refers to this music as "content" is already enough to turn stomachs.

Finally getting around to hearing Stolen & Contaminated Songs and it's great (and much better than the tumbleweeds blowing through this thread would suggest). The "Love's Secret Domain" demo uses the same vocal take (at least I am 95% sure it does), and there are few vocals elsewhere (though the answering machine message on "Who'll Fall" is chilling - does anyone know whose voice that is?). I've never been 100% clear about the division of labor in Coil, though I assume it's similar to a lot of sorta He's-the-DJ-I'm-The-Rapper type duos (ie Pet Shop Boys), and that Sleazy handles the lion's share of the production work. I'm sure there are people who know how it breaks down and who does what, but this is actually the first time I've thought about it.

One other observation after one listen: I think people forget how funny Coil can be. For example, see "Wrim Wram Wrom," whose tantalizingly inscrutable title appears to be inspired not by some esoteric Gnostic evocation but by the phonetic rendering of the synth sounds used on the track! That's my take, anyway.

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 23 January 2020 22:01 (four years ago) link

Yes, it is wonderful. The answering machine message on "Who'll Fall" was from a good friend of theirs but I don't think they ever revealed exactly who it was.

Sleazy was responsible for the vast majority of the production work; in the earlier days i think probably 100%. Around the LSD era Balance was perhaps a bit more involved with the production work. And yes, Coil had so much humour, something that I feel passes some of their more po faced fans by completely.

Also Norman Records

kraudive, Friday, 21 August 2020 14:09 (three years ago) link

got the black vinyl and the circle t-shirt, stoked

sleeve, Friday, 21 August 2020 14:11 (three years ago) link

The "moon" vinyl (200 copies) was sold out at 8:08

managed to get the "eclipse" version though (400 copies)

Been wanting this on vinyl for years. Very happy

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 21 August 2020 14:14 (three years ago) link

wish i had known about Norman Records.

i often say i have worn out a record but in the case of this it is actually true. original copies go for crazy money but mine has been played so much it must be totally worthless now. excited to hear it without scratches.

stirmonster, Friday, 21 August 2020 14:30 (three years ago) link

With WAVs from Bleep as well.

grebo shot first (Noel Emits), Friday, 21 August 2020 14:42 (three years ago) link

yeah thanks for pointing out the norman option, kraudive!

Indeed.

stirmonster, Saturday, 22 August 2020 19:32 (three years ago) link

indeed. (haha, "other messages have been posted since you last looked") I still get caught by these remaster-rereleases if/when they sound better than the originals, mostly, but it's gotta stop *some* time.

StanM, Saturday, 22 August 2020 19:32 (three years ago) link

Second pressing just announced - better hurry!

And the reissues keep on coming:

https://coldspring.bandcamp.com/album/a-guide-for-beginners-the-voice-of-silver-a-guide-for-finishers-a-hair-of-gold-csr288cd

I actually really like these compilations (I got them back in the day), they give a good overview of the band's output for those (like me) who find a whole album's worth of Coil a bit much.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Saturday, 29 August 2020 10:35 (three years ago) link

dammit - well ok then, it does seem to sound a bit better too :(

Had I missed any news about this? Thighpaulsandra is putting out a Coil book drawing on their 'art and archives':

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link

That seems exciting, if pricy

imago, Tuesday, 3 November 2020 16:49 (three years ago) link

Also looks like Hyde has ANOTHER thing up:

https://infinitefog.bandcamp.com/album/sara-dales-sensual-massage

IFP presents a long-awaited complete version of “Sara Dale's Sensual Massage” OST with 8 exclusive and unheard tracks.
Sara Dale's Sensual Massage was a delightful erotic video with a mystic soundtrack by Coil. Quite unusual for the band dreamy ambient, almost spa-relaxed soft harmonies, bland tribal rhythms, chimes, and birdsong but still with dark mysterious and inimitable Coil musick's charm.
However, the second part of the album explores more rhythmic structures that remind 'Gay Man's Guide...' soundtrack.

Besides the OST recordings, the edition includes bonus tracks from the "Basilisk prod.'s" era: “Theme From Blue”, and grandiose "The Hills Are Alive" so badly wanted on vinyl.

Per the notes on the Discogs page:

Complete version of Coil's OST for the erotic video “Sara Dale's Sensual Massage” including 8 previously unreleased tracks and bonus tracks from the Themes For Derek Jarman's Blue era.
This material was previously partially released on Coil - The Sound Of Musick.
