Bee OK, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 18:16 (four years ago) link

Haha the 120 minutes jam, great idea. Dang now I wish I did a videos ballot!

I just heard a recent interview with beck where he said devils haircut remains his favorite of all his videos, a good #1

One Eye Open, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 18:29 (four years ago) link

no E-pro in the top 5 is unforgivable!

Black Tambourine is a fav of mine too.

i just read where Beck is about to release a new album this summer. guess i jumped the gun on doing this poll a bit.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 19:14 (four years ago) link

a much better record than both guero and the information

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 June 2019 19:16 (four years ago) link

Yeah it’s probably my fave of the post-90s albums. Can’t remember if it made the cut in my ballot or not but I like “Volcano” a lot, probably his best version of that type of song imo.

That acoustic version was a pleasant surprise, it’s cool he put that out, definitely superior versions of some tracks

One Eye Open, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 19:29 (four years ago) link

...although I'll admit I still dont really get what people see in danger mouse or what he brings to the table as a producer, especially when it comes to beck, of all people - like having badfinger produce the beatles.

The last album of his I bought at the time of release. The back half >>>> the first half

also true

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 June 2019 19:39 (four years ago) link

Hearing "E-Pro" depressed me. It struck me as a death rattle ("Back to THIS sound?").

recriminations from the nitpicking woke (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 June 2019 19:40 (four years ago) link

I need to give this one another shot I think. I agree that Modern Guilt, which I checked out for the first time as a result of this poll, is better.

guero is better than i remember. prob due to the back half being good, as mentioned.

easy ball shooter (Spottie), Tuesday, 4 June 2019 19:56 (four years ago) link

"scarecrow" is really one of his absolute best songs

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 June 2019 19:57 (four years ago) link

xxp so wild that 'Stereopathetic' was actually released the week before Mellow Gold

I love the whole thing unreservedly

Stereopathetic is a wonder of an album, love it too (and ordered it thru cd-wow or some other late 90s online cd farm, after loving Mellow Gold)

LOL Alfred

Also my introduction to Calvin Johnson's voice, and it was years before I heard Beat Happening and discovered that it belonged to an actual human and wasn't Beck's voice pitched way down with some crazy effect.

So sad I missed the opportunity to vote in this. Close to my heart Beck will never be (ctrl+f's "scientology", 0 results. For one) but boy has he sound tracked my youth, and then some.

Time really is a piece of wax fallin' on a termite that's chokin' on the splinters.

imago, Saturday, 8 June 2019 14:48 (four years ago) link

btw alfred: "tropicalia" ends side one of mutations, at least on all official released versions of the lp. i was surprised too! ("diamond bollocks" and "runners dial zero" get their own 7-inch, which i thought was a nice touch)

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 8 June 2019 14:53 (four years ago) link

I didn't expect my #2 "Outcome" to place but I did expect "He's a Mighty Good Leader" to show up somewhere.

"Hollow Log" seems like a good winner for One Foot In The Grave tho, even though I assumed "Asshole" was the consensus favorite.

billstevejim, Saturday, 8 June 2019 15:28 (four years ago) link

extended 'gimme' sure is one long, strange trip

imago, Saturday, 8 June 2019 15:30 (four years ago) link

Regarding Sea Change, most of the album doesn't place among my favorites except for "End Of The Day" (which for some reason I thought was titled "Nothing That I Haven't Seen Before") -- again, I assumed this was the obvious consensus standout.

billstevejim, Saturday, 8 June 2019 15:33 (four years ago) link

As much as I'd like to get upset over his signature song winning this, it always sounds fresh every time I hear it. Not nearly as annoying as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" winning the Nirvana poll.

billstevejim, Saturday, 8 June 2019 15:39 (four years ago) link

I thought the same thing re:Mighty Good Leader, seems like one of the essential tracks from one One Foot. But also very happy that Hollow Log wound up where it did

I don't know Beck that well so I didn't vote, but really enjoyed the rollout, images, and discussion. I have to express my puzzlement, though, that no one voted for my favorite Beck thing, the video for "Deadweight." Those first three Director Series DVDs, and Gondry's especially, seemed to come from an alternate universe where the '90s were an era of nonpareil pop culture creativity.

Deadweight would’ve ranked very high on my ballot but I haven’t really liked anything he’s done since Mutations and I don’t even really like that one much

brimstead, Monday, 10 June 2019 00:02 (four years ago) link

that one - mutations not deadweight.

Can't believe "ELectric Music and the Summer People" is nowhere in this thread!

not sure if i want to do a review of the show, i will say this: his newer songs were the best songs in this environment for some odd reason. Cage the Elephant is not a good pairing for Beck as pretty much everyone came for them and not Beck.

two years pass...

I have been listening to our playlist over the last couple of days. Played Sexx Laws and Nicotine & Gravy back to back right now.

Beck is damn good and perfect for the weather right now in Southern California.
