Yeah it’s probably my fave of the post-90s albums. Can’t remember if it made the cut in my ballot or not but I like “Volcano” a lot, probably his best version of that type of song imo.

That acoustic version was a pleasant surprise, it’s cool he put that out, definitely superior versions of some tracks

...although I'll admit I still dont really get what people see in danger mouse or what he brings to the table as a producer, especially when it comes to beck, of all people - like having badfinger produce the beatles.

Also my introduction to Calvin Johnson's voice, and it was years before I heard Beat Happening and discovered that it belonged to an actual human and wasn't Beck's voice pitched way down with some crazy effect.

btw alfred: "tropicalia" ends side one of mutations, at least on all official released versions of the lp. i was surprised too! ("diamond bollocks" and "runners dial zero" get their own 7-inch, which i thought was a nice touch)

I didn't expect my #2 "Outcome" to place but I did expect "He's a Mighty Good Leader" to show up somewhere.

"Hollow Log" seems like a good winner for One Foot In The Grave tho, even though I assumed "Asshole" was the consensus favorite.

extended 'gimme' sure is one long, strange trip

Regarding Sea Change, most of the album doesn't place among my favorites except for "End Of The Day" (which for some reason I thought was titled "Nothing That I Haven't Seen Before") -- again, I assumed this was the obvious consensus standout.

As much as I'd like to get upset over his signature song winning this, it always sounds fresh every time I hear it. Not nearly as annoying as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" winning the Nirvana poll.

I thought the same thing re:Mighty Good Leader, seems like one of the essential tracks from one One Foot. But also very happy that Hollow Log wound up where it did

I don't know Beck that well so I didn't vote, but really enjoyed the rollout, images, and discussion. I have to express my puzzlement, though, that no one voted for my favorite Beck thing, the video for "Deadweight." Those first three Director Series DVDs, and Gondry's especially, seemed to come from an alternate universe where the '90s were an era of nonpareil pop culture creativity.

Deadweight would’ve ranked very high on my ballot but I haven’t really liked anything he’s done since Mutations and I don’t even really like that one much
