there's a great moment in the 4th ep of that Ronson podcast where this woman chews him out for being an exploitive vulture willing to use gossip + ill feelings + rumors + nastiness + prurience to make a titillating story and how it's ultimately irresponsible etc and it's just like "wow right on" and then he's like "well obviously I can't stop the story now."

It's good that he keeps it in, especially in that form, because he's clearly questioning the whole project at that point, and the listener should too. When it turns out that the woman has an agenda and is not really playing fair, it's kind of a relief, and I wonder if he would have junked it if that weren't the case.

The whole thing is so toxic it's hard to know who benefits from the story being told. One worry is that it's Ronson who benefits. His tone sometimes makes me think of the last shot of Bowling for Columbine: Moore leaves the image of the girl at Charlton Heston's house and walks away all hunched shouldered with a 'more in sorrow than in anger' slouch. It's not quite sanctimony but it's in that zone.

xxp it's so gross and i'm someone who has enjoyed some of ronson's work in the past but this feels just so gratuitous and just stirring up the worst impulses of human beings to get a not particularly insightful story

i finished the whole thing bc i wanted to give ronson a chance to make all this petty human tragedy mean something but he gets nowhere

if you didn't know that the porn industry has a number of unhappy damaged ppl in it you might find it educational. even the prurient aspects are so low key and low stakes ultimately for a story about a sex industry it's just normatively bleak.

the Rialto Report is a good interview podcast with stars & directors of porn of yore by 2 consultants from HBO’s The Deuce. It’s pretty good.

American poetry podcasts that are good include VS (aka Versus) and Poetry Off The Shelf.

They mentioned it on a recent episode, I think it was a yacht or nyacht? Said they're doing ten more episodes so they hit 100 and then stop. Though they also hinted they'd do other things in the podcast format.

Probably in a minority here and Not a podcast but Have to recommend the 4 Extra rebroadcast of a great adaptation of a Mrs Henry Wood Melodromatic pot boiler; East Lynne. From back when radio 4 could expend seven hours of drama on moralising Victorian pulp fiction.

I have to say I like how actually doing a podcast has already made me more attuned to the finer points of recording and editing, as well as pacing in general — each episode is building on the last as I am able to drill down on certain points. I’m not saying we still can’t improve but it is happening!

I'm really not enjoying It Could Happen Here, but it's kept me riveted.

That podcast was good enough that I checked out the host's other show Behind the Bastards, but it's that format I kind of hate where someone presents information and two other people crack dumb jokes.

Yeah, my friend really likes The Dollop, but the one time I gave it a shot it sounded like a Morning Zoo thing. Like, "Welcome back to the Dollop, my name is David ... AND I'M THE SQUEEGE!"

Some XPs: his Behind the Bastards isn't that annoying, though his guests express unawareness of history more than they add humor.

On the subject of Robert Evans, I ended up dropping This Could Happen Here after three episodes - just didn't seem at all insightful to me, pointing out a lot of troubling trends and phenomena we already know about without any particular connective tissue between them. Maybe I stopped too early but it seemed to veer into wildly speculative territory after more or less promising not to.

xp i've mentioned it many times before but if u don't already listen to the afropop worldwide podcast it combines amazing music w/ lots of great historical and contemporary information about the countries it visits and many episodes use music as a launching pad to explore much larger conflicts. i haven't listened yet but very interested in recent ep "Bolsonaro Is and Isn't" which they describe in ep description as a "look at who Bolsonaro is, who his targets are, and how he rose to power. We also hear the first round of songs written to protest his hard, right-wing politics." there was an ep a year or so ago about Kagame and his imprisoning of musician Kizito Mihigo that was v good, a recent ep about the relationship btwn haiti and DR and musical exchanges, etc.
