it's funny, one of the benefits for me of running is that after 3-4 months of training I invariably lose about ten pounds and consequently stop snoring!

(also congrats on that 10k time, GP... that's really great! is a parkrun a fixed distance?)

5k generally. they run hundreds every saturday morning

Neat, that sounds fun... I'd definitely do that if I was over there. I envy you your pleasant summer running temperatures.

I have a few friends approaching their 100th park run. But I'm 30 minutes from 3 different organised runs and the social aspect doesn't appeal.

koogs, Monday, 3 June 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link

You should train by running between them! : )

lol i love this snorepins running hack

lag∞n, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:29 (four years ago) link

btw i think olympic lifting might be good for running too

lag∞n, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:29 (four years ago) link

also i watched a video of sprinters training and they do some wild shit

lag∞n, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:32 (four years ago) link

surprised —train like a sprinter— has never become a thing, maybe its too technical, i mean i know ppl sprint and all but the entire sprinting regimen they do some cool stuff

lag∞n, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:35 (four years ago) link

they lift a lot of weights

I had a sorta hippie racing teammate/pal in the 90s who long promoted the benes of nose breathing any time possible. which apparently for him then at 6’1” 138 was like A LOT. i was all, “dude, that nose shit CANNOT happen above tempo for me, if then. and when i’m pressing, i’ll breathe through anything, including my asshole, just to stay in.” the fact that i still couldnt stick, and he would, just made it worse.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:45 (four years ago) link

what about yogic breathing while running lol im sure someone out there is into it

I'm fortunate that I have about 12 within 30 minutes of mine and my local one is only a 7 minute drive or 30 minute run.

Get that the social side isn't for everyone but I've made lots of friends through it.

three months pass...

more park run... a friend has just done one whilst on holiday in krakow. (she's done others whilst on holiday before but only within the uk)

koogs, Saturday, 14 September 2019 16:02 (four years ago) link

this unrelenting summer heat is really making my training rough... I can wait until around 8pm to head out, but it's still about 95 degrees outside, and humid. No problem for 5-6 miles, but when I'm doing a long run (10+ miles) after about 90 minutes it really gets to me. canada please send us a cold front!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 14 September 2019 16:28 (four years ago) link

yeah i dont really run much in the summer, weather started to turn around here and im getting back into it

lag∞n, Saturday, 14 September 2019 17:17 (four years ago) link

one month passes...

for my mental health i'm stopping my biking for a while. a looong while. a year maybe? it was taking too much time, too much mental energy, and was getting pretty remote and risky. so i'll be increasing my (horrible) running from 2x/week, 6-9 mi/week to-- more than that. Not sure how much more, it'll depend on what other fun stuff i can find to do.

anyhow, i currently use my phone on the strava app to record my runs, and i'm turning off strava for a while too. but i sorta am game-ified enough that i like a record of my workouts, it gives me something to do (i actually fold all my records, running or riding, into golden cheetah for parsing and posterity. it's not really great for running compared to the power/cycling analysis, but it's something to geek around about).

1) any recommendations for phone app run recording? i use a bluetooth hrm strap (tickr). i have an old mapmyrun account, but it seems like a blizzard of advert bullshit, and i don't see a lap control anywhere. now that i'm all run-ny maybe i want laps? i thought garminconnect would allow me record, but it doesn't seem to have that functionality.

2) or is there a reasonably priced watch thing you like that i should use, instead of a phone app? like, less than a $100 or so? i don't think i want or need barometric altitude, or stride count, or accelerometers or any of that, do i? *hunt3r's inner voice "YOU DON'T NEED ANYTING MAN GET OFF YER ASS AND GO RUNNING"*

3) i have a 2010 era wrist strap adaptor for my garmins, but there is no preset format that swaps from speed to run/pace displays, which would be rad and simple. back when i did training and running imogene in 2010, i just used my garmin on my wrist, but as weird as i looked than, i assume i'd look even weirder now. if there was a runmode i'm not aware off for my 520, though, do advise.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 17:11 (four years ago) link

A Garmin Forerunner 35 is $100 (if you don't care about it being turquoise blue, black is $20 more) and does wrist-monitored heart rate, distance, and pace... I have a 235 which tracks the same stuff and I've found it to be very good. I have doubts about wrist-monitored heart rate compared to chest straps, but it's so much easier to not bother with a chest strap I don't care. It's like a weigh scale, might not be totally accurate but it will show the relative changes in your numbers over time.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 15 October 2019 17:23 (four years ago) link

ya get the garmin

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 17:25 (four years ago) link

thanks so much. I def dont care about colors, i’ll check it out.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 18:18 (four years ago) link

I've got the 235 too and love it. probably more than $100, although usually discounted on Black Friday and has dropped in price anyway now the 245 is out.

The Strava phone app lets you record runs and is pretty decent (phone dependant). Used to use it regularly before getting my Forerunner

groovypanda, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 20:32 (four years ago) link

It’s not been a bad kludge for a non-runner, i’ve probly used it a...couple hundred times lol.

So i bought the $89 lovely blueee one at target, need to go retrieve. If i cant live with the turquoise which accents my coloring and fancy so well, i can buy a replacement strap on amazon for < $8, so $$aving$ are happening.

Sorry so goofy i’m listening to peggysuicide for first time since 90s it’s got me weird. i dont even know why but it’s likely ilm somehow. 😐

hahaha, Peggy Suicide is timeless but Saint Julian's probably a better running album! congrats on your cool new running watch

Huh one actual day after i decided to stop using strava app to record runs, they announce they’re cutting support for ant+ AND bluetooth data, like my tickr hrm (which i bought ages ago just for this purpose). lol screw ya anyhow strava, we had good times for 9 yrs.

T-14 days until my trail half, so happy the weather finally turned cold... last long run tonight before I start tapering.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 17 October 2019 14:29 (four years ago) link

i'm gonna go do my first trail run in a long time, stoke feels real

Hunt3r, Thursday, 17 October 2019 16:29 (four years ago) link

slow and steady = the way to go on trails. enjoy

tobo73, Thursday, 17 October 2019 16:30 (four years ago) link

i ordered some trail shoes the other day since ive been running mostly trails for the past couple years

lag∞n, Thursday, 17 October 2019 16:40 (four years ago) link

this is my first real trail half, I see the top finishers for this race in previous years have come in around two hours, so I'm shooting for 2:45... slow and steady, enjoy the scenery, finish.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 17 October 2019 16:52 (four years ago) link

^^ that's the spirit. def don't get hung up on your pace, just enjoy the ride.

tobo73, Thursday, 17 October 2019 17:03 (four years ago) link

it was great! the descent is like 500ft of 8% but a couple runners of 15%+ that are risky. Ive ridden it hundreds of times, so it’s like home.

I had no expectations for forerunner, i am surprised how much more integrated functionality it has built in—i’m pretty familiar with garminconnect from my bike gps, but this thing is aimed much more like a fitbit thing—sleep, msging, all that. Basic, but not too basic. HRM always seems perfect so far. When i think about my first polar hrm in 93, it was considered so next level, but now lol. this is amazingly simple. likin it.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 17 October 2019 19:53 (four years ago) link

Enjoy xps

Did my first ever trail race (10K) last month. Was epic. Finished in 48 minutes whereas I've been running 38 and 39 minute 10Ks in road races this year. Have another 9 mile one next month.

What do trail races entail in the USA? Over here (UK) they generally involve uneven, narrow paths through woods, lots of mud, plenty of hills and probably a stream or two to wade through for good measure.

groovypanda, Thursday, 17 October 2019 19:58 (four years ago) link

(ok the steps thing is gtfo, still tryna eradicate)

Hunt3r, Thursday, 17 October 2019 20:02 (four years ago) link

I'd imagine there's as much course variation as there are trail races. No doubt some of them have much wilder terrain than this one I'm about to do. It doesn't have water crossings but looks to have pretty narrow trails through the woods.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 17 October 2019 20:36 (four years ago) link

feel like stream crossings are integral to what robyn hitchcock referred to as english “dampness” tbh. i think i’m looking for dry trails

Hunt3r, Thursday, 17 October 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link

trails are a whole universe of running experiences imo. i love trail running so much. the only trail experiences i don't care for are sand and ice/snow (and mud if it's just like, the entire trail is a mud pit after a rain). running on solid unbroken slickrock is one of the greatest joys i have ever experienced. also one of the only surfaces you can really run on while it's raining. thinking about the times i ran on slickrock while it was pouring and waterfalls were cascading everywhere around me still makes me tear up. i love shortish, steep inclines. i finally did some mountain running this summer - a short trail rice (5 miles) and some running on my own. unbroken uphill vertical on mountains (the wasatch front ski areas, particularly snowbird) definitely still wigs me out, i can't even comprehend doing something like the ouray-telluride race tbh. i've always wanted to do a knotty / gnarly trail on the california coast. ya'll are fast and long runners! i've been doing it for a few years but my fastest running has held firm at about 10 min / mile and i don't really like going farther than 6-7 miles. this is probably because my legs are short and i have above average muscle mass for my body size.

― lag∞n, Thursday, October 17, 2019 5:40 PM (four hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

what shoes did you get? i used to do cascadias then solomans but they were all too narrow and the toe box would always bust out after a few months. lately i've been using my gym shoes (nike metcons) which are perfect for me, extremely solid, wide foot with a low drop.

cheese canopy (map), Thursday, 17 October 2019 21:41 (four years ago) link

new balance summit unknown, nb zante is my goto shoe so just tried to figure out what was the similar trail shoe

lag∞n, Thursday, 17 October 2019 21:47 (four years ago) link

I like how cascadias look- i tend to get tendonitis in my feet on low-drop shoes afaict, and have had great luck in ghosts. Cascadias seem to have more drop than most trailshoes, also afaict.

(i am sore in quads right above knees today which seems rude but is obviously correct am i a runner yet)

Hunt3r, Friday, 18 October 2019 18:13 (four years ago) link

Good luck with it, Hunter. FWIW, I've got a Garmin Foreunner and if you're avoiding Strava, you can get plenty of data and analysis on Garmin Connect instead.

Did my first 'Parkrun' this morning. I assume Parkruns have been mentioned in this thread, but I haven't looked at it for about 10 years so I'm not sure.

the salacious inaudible (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 19 October 2019 20:00 (four years ago) link

thanks for encouragement.

so far garminconnect is fine, i can move it to golden cheetah from there to stack figures with my bike archives. good to know about parkrun (which in my head immed became "parklife" because old).

my quads are still so touchy that going down steps hurts. i am a little shocked, as i'm not exactly "off the couch," and i still have this, haha me. so anyway i did another indoor ride. i wanted to go out to enjoy the weather, but nope, i'm gonna try to stick to my rules until the longing goes away.

Hunt3r, Saturday, 19 October 2019 23:15 (four years ago) link

interestingly, i was broadcasting from the forerunner to golden cheetah, and the it worked perfectly til minute 36, and it was haywire for four minutes. i didn't even notice it for whatever reason as i was looking at the tubes and wires and ant+ info. so yup, dropouts, they happen tis true.

do any forerunner ppl know if/how to change the number of display pages on outdoor run mode? Ive done it in garminconnect, synced in 9 different directions, rebooted all devices afaict... i really want a third page.

hi Hunter. I am also a cyclist who recently took up running again (after a little over 4 years off). I haven't given up cycling but wanted to mix things up, plus I figured I'm pretty fit now - I do between 100-200k on the road bike most weeks.

Anyway, I also had seriously sore quads when I started back running. I guess my fitness was way ahead of my legs, apparently it's a common thing. To alleviate this I have gone back to doing running/walking intervals like when I first did Couch to 5k years ago. 4-5 minutes' running followed by walking for a minute or two. Seems to be working. I also bought fancy new runners, which didn't hurt...

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Sunday, 20 October 2019 21:15 (four years ago) link

awesome p-dog, thanks. i will be trying new things for sure. our iltrmb circle has gone p dormant for commentary but i see them peoples on strava at fat mantis club.

i think my actual soreness falls out of the steep and rough descent i did, and all those eccentric contractions. I run enough that light sprints and 10k pretty brisk are usually harmless as to soreness.

since i’m not riding (cept indoor on 2x/week for calories), i may do more xc skiiing and downhill this winter. for that, the trail running was/is perfect.

nobody is as zealous on runningrunning as a convert, eh? sorry all.

run/walk def the fastest way to ramp up yr fitness, u can call it intervals
