The amount of good songs Prince made after Purple Rain can be counted on 1 hand. Sign O the Times' production on the whole (some tracks avoid it) is a prime example of mid-late 80s bad synth, overly gated ugliness.

a lot of the production makes me think of, like, sunset strip hair metal... a good thing

Madonna's music is bad and Madonna in general is an embarrassingly lame human being

I feel that way about many (most?) pop stars, but not Madonna

She means a lot to my spouse but, yeah, I'm often mystified by what people seem to get out of most of her work, especially since the 80s. "Live to Tell" is cool, though.

Some great singles and a solid album (Ray of Light). Good enough in my book.

I’d rather listen to the worst Limp Bizkit album than the best Joe Satriani album. But I’d also prefer to pour mercury from a broken thermometer into my ears than to listen to a full Satriani album.

Indeed. It is probably more controversial to think that "The Crush of Love" is a classic single, which I do.

I feel like there has been a drift over the last couple of decades where consensus has gone from "every note Bon Jovi ever recorded is completely worthless" to "some Bon Jovi tracks / LPs are actually good" and I cant help feeling that this is a symptom of a greater moral decline.

Sounds fine, would be a bit annoying explaining why they were bad, but I'd get over it.

this whole exchange gives me life. I don't hate the Beatles nor do I hate Bon Jovi, but I'd rather hear Bon Jovi than the Beatles about 99% of the time. of course, i'd rather not hear either of them because they're both kind of trash, but at least Bon Jovi is real trash.

More or less, it seems to me over recent years that:

- ilx needs to be convinced they shouldn't automatically hate an indie act they heard about
- ilx needs to be convinced they shouldn't automatically like a pop act they heard about

Just an impression I have; I don't have enough citations to back that up in a debate at the moment

Under my anecdotal premise I guess I feel like that leans towards "automatically like" generally as well? IDK

Speaking purely personally, I have heard enough indie guitar music to last me a lifetime, and any new music of this sort has to be either very good or very novel to not seem like a total waste of time.

I was convinced I'd get more pushback for making generalizations like this. Was inspired by the Car Seat Headrest discussions. Everyone on ilx seems to want to give that guy a swirly.

the phrase "indie landfill" came about for a reason. the bar there is so, so low compared to pop music, which is as brutal and cutthroat a competition as one gets.

"moondance" would be a much, much better record if only van morrison had had the good sense to excise the title track

I think it's a good album with or without "Moondance". Not quite as good as "Tupelo Honey" though (the album, not the song).
