WHAT IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE MAIN POLL?

Anything that screened in a cinema presentation in 2018.

What if I really liked a film that placed in 2016, but didn't screen in Europe until 2018?

Go ahead and vote for it. Feel free to campaign in this thread.

What if something only came out in Canada on DVD and in March 2019, but showed at film festivals in Bucharest and Hobart in 2018?

That little baby is eligible as heck, you go ahead and vote for it.

"Zama was high on my ballot this year but after seeing how low it placed I'm definitely voting for it again next year"

Vote early, vote often.

What if I really liked something that won last year, but didn't see it until January 2018?

Guess what: nobody outside of NYC or LA saw it in 2017, but they voted for it anyway. Don't pretend you live in NYC or LA for the sake of restricting your life choices.

Death Of Stalin didn't come out in the US until March 2018.

It got banned in Russia but screened illegally in straight-up commercial cinemas in 2018 anyway. Are you going to let the Ministry of Culture's officers decide what you can't vote for?

What if I saw the only existing nitrate print of a 1932 silent in a single museum screening in 2018? Is that eligible?

Yes, it's fucken eligible. You'll be throwing your vote away, but it's preferential ballots, so you still have 34 more, suck it USA and UK.

The Other Side Of The Wind isn't from 2018 per se and was completed for Netflix, but it did show at the Virginia Film Festival, so...

You can vote for it AS LONG AS you watched the whole thing in one go and didn't start googling on your phone to check what bits were filmed by who and when, and using what film stock, and what had that guy been in just before this, and oh this bit is good... now what was I looking up again?

36.15 code Père Noël came out in 1989 but didn't have a US release of any kind until one festival and a limited theatrical run for Christmas 2018, does that count?

I understand your trepidation, but honestly the question answers itself.

Paddington 2 didn't come out in the US until 2019 and I didn't see it until after the ILX pol-

A VOTE FOR THE BEAR FILM IS A VOTE FOR TRUTH.

Twin Peaks was especially ruled eligible last year because of one screening at MOMA but that didn't actually happen until January.

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 20:53 (four years ago) link

Three and a half weeks isn't long enough for me to get my ballot together, can you extend it?

That has nothing to do with eligibility, and we're only running this late because a plurality of voters wanted to wait until mid-year. If I hear another word out of the back seat, I'm turning around at a week's voting.

I don't go to movies, but I have a REALLY big TV, and I liked that one doco on an app where the guy talked about sucking dick for Evian.

That's nice, dear.

So did the five months mean Infinite Football got a wide release?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 21:34 (four years ago) link

I’m wondering how to vote for Twin Peaks: The Return. It really feels to me like it’s from 2017. There were two spoiler threads that followed it as it was streamed that year, together comprising 10,000+ posts! I wish I had been a part of those threads, they are among my favorites on ILX ever, but I didn’t watch it until 2018 when it was released on dvd.

I don’t even know if it’s a film per se but it ranks near the very top of my favorite viewing experiences of this decade. I think I’m going to include it in my older films list, which is going to be hard to sort out since I watched a lot of older classic films for the first time last year

I will instead vote for a TV show from '72 that premiered in US theaters in 2018. Expand your horizons.

I saw that one at moma like 2 weeks after the tp screening, all in one go :-)

TV show from 1980 that got a rep release in 2018 in the states, but which I will not be voting for because it’s bloody impossible to see here: PERSONAL PROBLEMS

I hope to see the following on your ballots:

Claire’s Camera (Hong Sang-soon)
Zama (Lucrecia Martel)
Let the Sunshine In (Claire Denis)
You Were Never Really Here (Lynne Ramsay)
First Reformed (Paul Schrader).
Museo (Alonso Ruizpalacios)
Burning (Lee Chang-dong)
Monrovia, Indiana (Frederick Wiseman)
Ava (Sadaf Foroughi)
Sollers Point (Matthew Porterfield)
1985 (Yen Tan)
Leave No Trace (Debra Granik)

recriminations from the nitpicking woke (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 16:20 (four years ago) link

I missed Monrovia when it played here... I wish there was a way to see Wiseman movies other than buying the DVDs from Zipporah. It'd be one thing if he had like 10 movies but how many are there... 40?

I'm voting for The Image Book even though I saw it in 2019 and I'm also voting for Let the Sunshine In even though I voted for it in the last poll. thanks for the Fassbinder reminder Morbs, I could only come up with 9 films last night, I will include that one (screened here last summer but I didn't see it until a couple weeks ago).

flappy bird, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 16:34 (four years ago) link

If we're campaigning, I hope people find space for:

24 Frames (Abbas Kiarostami)
Hale County This Morning, This Evening (RaMell Ross)
Support the Girls (Andrew Bujalski)
The Green Fog (Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson)
Did You Wonder Who Fired The Gun? (Travis Wilkerson)

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 16:41 (four years ago) link

I watched Did You Wonder Who Fired The Gun? at home on Monday. I like it, but think it's a little overaestheticized (makes sense that it was initially done as a live multimedia event).

24 Frames I was rather disappointed in. That's an installation.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 16:46 (four years ago) link

Support the Girls is on my list of things to watch before voting.

I would point people towards Private Life, Happy as Lazzaro, Upgrade and 1985 (hi, Alfred!).

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 16:48 (four years ago) link

24 Frames hit me, as almost all Kiarostamis do, right in the root of my spinal cord. They're ASMR in movie form.

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 16:52 (four years ago) link

(And a great deal more than that, obviously, but this one allowed me the chance to put that aspect to the forefront.)

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 16:52 (four years ago) link

yes 24 Frames is my #3. seeing it in a huge theater definitely helped, not sure how it would go over at home, I could barely stick with Shirin.

I don't understand the praise for Support the Girls at all. Didn't dislike it but such a wispy nothing of a movie.

ALL VOTERS HAVE RECEIVED CONFIRMATION EMAILS. If you voted and haven't received an affirmation or a question, please submit again.

There will be no Best Streaming results, as only one ballot was received. Take that, The Future!

If anyone missed the vote and can get a MAIN ballot in by tomorrow afternoon, RUSH RUSH RUSH! I'll prepare the other side results before I get crunching on the tough numbers.

Everyone who voted Paddington 2 last year and didn't vote again for US release (2018, apologies for typo above): as long as you didn't use all 35 slots this year*, I should assume you want it slotted in, yeah?

TALLYING COMPLETE

I think I caught everything misspelled or missing half the title, but if not, it's on the voter.

Several films I was looking forward to finding images for have fallen outside the top 50.

If we were extending out to everything that needed two votes to qualify (ie 36 points), the lowest rank would be 72. The very lowest double-vote-receiver ranked at 88, with 14 points. The lowest triple-vote-receiver is at 83, with 33 points.
