kind of conflicted with this:

-general dislike all behemoth sports teams which the warriors are
-find their moving arena to sf and all the tech money involved gross
-generally root for canadian teams over teams from the US

otoh:

-warrriors are much better and are going to win
-drake

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Monday, 27 May 2019 18:19 (four years ago) link

also:

-kawhi is a snake
-kawhi's uncle is a snake
-drake rhymes with snake

it will be kind of funny if the dubs win this one, move to sf, and then the dynasty immediately falls apart.

circles, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:19 (four years ago) link

bay area is funny its balkanized like theres no where else that has teams in bordering cities in the same metro area, like brooklyn has the nets now but no one really gives a shit abt the distinction and its all part of nyc, and ppl really didnt care when the nets were in north jersey, but in the bay theres a real cross bay thing w all the attendant cultural dynamics and so forth

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:37 (four years ago) link

also its funny that ppl care where basketball and baseball teams specifically play but no one cares where football teams do , 49rs are in santa clara giants and jets dont even play in the same state as the city they supposedly represent

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:39 (four years ago) link

patriots play in the most random lil mass town that was chosen cause its not that far from a bunch of bigger population centers

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:40 (four years ago) link

also being named golden state in a state that has 3 other nba teams is pretty funny, shd change the name to the bay warriors imo

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:43 (four years ago) link

theres also the san jose sharks, wild

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:43 (four years ago) link

on the one hand i respect oaklands claim to the warriors and all the race-class dynamics that inform it but on the other its normal to have the sports team play in the central city of a metro area, and also its sad that the once bohemian city of san francisco is now synonymous with intolerable rich nerds

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:52 (four years ago) link

it's weird to think that san francisco used to be a sort of normal city when now it's like global capitalism has thrown all of its money into a dump truck and dumped it right there. it's sort of inevitable that the warriors would move but still kind of sad.

circles, Monday, 27 May 2019 20:02 (four years ago) link

Kevin Durant is out for Game 1 of the NBA Finals

Guys, I talked to Transformer and turns out the games are cancelled:

The winner of the NBA Finals will be named on Saturday evening.

The NBA's commissioner will choose the winner in an event scheduled to be held at The Q in Las Vegas.

Fetchboy, Monday, 27 May 2019 21:02 (four years ago) link

I'll root for Toronto. Hope Kawhi is healthy. GS without KD is a likeable team. I hope KD doesn't play, and then goes to the Knicks next year.

I picked GS in 6

nicky lo-fi, Monday, 27 May 2019 22:59 (four years ago) link

Toronto is a lot more likable without the dude who fucked over the spurs

brimstead, Monday, 27 May 2019 23:12 (four years ago) link

If the warriors win I hope KD doesn’t play.
If the raps win I hope KD does play.

Yes I’m a bitter, bitter man.

kd will be fine again when he is on the knicks, the only franchise with a fanbase desperate enough to rehabilitate his image

ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 01:06 (four years ago) link

idk the knicks roster is so bad that even if they land another allstar theyll still be not that good and if kd is on his own theyll be straight up bad

kd in san antone on the other hand......

i support it also he looks and plays like george gervin so maybe they cld go back to those sick unis from his era that say san antonio on them and kd cld maybe even wear gervins jersey and ppl cld start calling him george and he cld start a whole new life like being in witness protection

I’d take Aldridge for sure. A sign n trade is the next best thing beyond him re signing a long term. Doesn’t really matter what the dubs get back.

I thought your comment was somewhat off but held off till looking at the geotagged Twitter map. Not really accurate, I know, since it's based on just hashtags, but my initial gut reaction was that most Americans would root for the Raptors:

Sooooo...Everyone wants the Raptors to end the Warriors' dynasty? 👀 😶 #WeTheNorthAmerica

people are probably just bored with the dubs' hegemony. tho i am certainly a patriot, i sympathize with that viewpoint.

I root for whoever is down at the moment, so it can change a dozen times in the last couple minutes of a game lol. When asked who I'm rooting for I say it's not a who but a what: good basketball, exciting finish

yah exactly. (if my team isn’t playing)

tend to root for individual guys rather than players. portland series was weird cause I love dame so

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 18:42 (four years ago) link

rather than teams I meant to say

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 18:43 (four years ago) link

do they measure players' distance traveled? i would be interested to see how much more ground he covers in a game/season than an average player

mookieproof, Friday, 14 June 2019 19:09 (four years ago) link

i kind of ended up on the bandwagon after all with this series so last night was very fun for me. as sad as it is for gsw fans with with those big injuries i can't help but think that this was probably it for the raptors, they'll lose leonard and end up being a team that makes the playoffs but isn't a real contender (not the worse thing in the world, of course)

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:14 (four years ago) link

also, thinking in glass-half-full terms: they had one shot and they took it, and that doesn't go away

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:14 (four years ago) link

seems like a bargain that every non-spoiled fanbase would take in a heartbeat

frogbs, Friday, 14 June 2019 19:18 (four years ago) link

kawhi is prob the only star in the league i cld see taking off after winning a ring, like he wldnt even think it was weird, but u gotta think the raps have a good shot at retaining him, they just won it all!

lag∞n, Friday, 14 June 2019 19:19 (four years ago) link

idk i think Kawhi can leave Toronto a hero with no hard feelings which will make it somewhat easier, the fanbase knew going into this season that he was likely to bolt and this is just the best-case scenario for them and also for him. I think if the Raps lost this series and then he left it would be so much harder on them (and a bit harder on him).

omar little, Friday, 14 June 2019 19:46 (four years ago) link

I don’t care if Kawhi goes to LA, I’d rather keep him if possible but really as long as Ujiri is at the helm that’s what matters.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 14 June 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link

This sums up how much of a nightmare the parade (which ended with a shooting) was today:

http://torontosun.com/sports/basketball/nba/toronto-raptors/simmons-parade-was-a-disaster-on-many-levels

We brought the whole school down to the gym to watch it this morning, but because nothing was happening forever, the kids understandably got noisier and noisier, until everyone headed back to their own classes to watch. By mid-afternoon, the players were still making their way to Nathan Phillips Square.

what a cluster fuck tho, seriously. on the bright side i got to leave work early because so much of downtown was fucked.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 18 June 2019 06:17 (four years ago) link

The Sun's terrible except for sports, where they tend to cover stuff much more in depth (for years, pre-internet, they were the only place you could get detailed baseball stats). I thought Simmons captured yesterday pretty well.

clemenza, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 14:09 (four years ago) link

why is he so happy Brett Hull wasn't there? Huh?

maffew12, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 14:29 (four years ago) link

There were 2 million people in the streets. The shooting was despicable but it was an isolated incident. Yes, it was hot and slow, but that all was forgotten once the buses crawled past and the crowd exploded in cheers. The feeling of community was intense; everyone decked in Raptors merch like it was the uniform in a communist country. It was thrilling; many workplaces (like mine) were empty most of the day, everyone watching from somewhere, and the good vibes lasted all afternoon. And fuck the Sun. They're probably bitter their boy was booed by 65K at Nathan Phillips and snubbed by Masai on the parade route.

dinnerboat, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 15:05 (four years ago) link

nice

lag∞n, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 15:43 (four years ago) link

I wouldn't pin that on the Sun (again, I know the many problems with the Sun). I'm sure everyone experienced yesterday differently, and if you were there, I'm glad you had a great time. Watching on TV, though, they seemed quite unprepared for the crowd, the whole thing seemed interminable, and the shooting was the final negative, not the first.
