another major subplot: will Pat Mccaw get revenge on the warriors?

easy ball shooter (Spottie), Sunday, 26 May 2019 04:23 (four years ago) link

I’m actually happy for the raps, glad they finally made it.

But I hope they lose and I hope drake gets sick and can’t come to any of the games

brimstead, Sunday, 26 May 2019 05:02 (four years ago) link

hm how do I root for the raptors but also for America and against drake it’s something of a quandary

Clay, Sunday, 26 May 2019 05:24 (four years ago) link

i don’t really care who wins. just hoping for a 6 or 7 game series with a couple close ones.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 26 May 2019 12:38 (four years ago) link

i consider any raptors boosterism on this board by non-canadians to be treason and a personal betrayal punishable by mean yellow cards and thread banning depending on the severity

ive got dubs in 6. split in TO, win all the games at oracle.

be the 2 chainz you want 2 see in the world (m bison), Sunday, 26 May 2019 15:00 (four years ago) link

I have GSW in 6, too, just because I'm the cautious type. Could go down in 5 or even 4. They won't need KD for this one, if Dray plays like he did against the Blazers. The Dubs team defense is underrated.

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 26 May 2019 19:54 (four years ago) link

raps defense has been great too obv gs is favored but this cld be a slog aka type of series dubs dont want

lag∞n, Sunday, 26 May 2019 20:21 (four years ago) link

p much raps beat bucks via great transition D which is also helpful vs dubs, weve seen how ordinary they cn be in the halfcourt

lag∞n, Sunday, 26 May 2019 20:22 (four years ago) link

the scenario in which the raps win is their D continuing at its current level and kawhi being great which is also current level

(and no further cowardice by important raptors)

lag∞n, Sunday, 26 May 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

wildcard is kd coming back and being bad

Me: RAPTORS IN 4 💪💪💪💪

Danny green traditionally does well on curry. And he’s shooting like 10% so this could be an ascend to the mean type of series for him. Their defense can def slow down their attack.

kind of conflicted with this:

-general dislike all behemoth sports teams which the warriors are
-find their moving arena to sf and all the tech money involved gross
-generally root for canadian teams over teams from the US

otoh:

-warrriors are much better and are going to win
-drake

-drake rhymes with snake

it will be kind of funny if the dubs win this one, move to sf, and then the dynasty immediately falls apart.

circles, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:19 (four years ago) link

bay area is funny its balkanized like theres no where else that has teams in bordering cities in the same metro area, like brooklyn has the nets now but no one really gives a shit abt the distinction and its all part of nyc, and ppl really didnt care when the nets were in north jersey, but in the bay theres a real cross bay thing w all the attendant cultural dynamics and so forth

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:37 (four years ago) link

also its funny that ppl care where basketball and baseball teams specifically play but no one cares where football teams do , 49rs are in santa clara giants and jets dont even play in the same state as the city they supposedly represent

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:39 (four years ago) link

patriots play in the most random lil mass town that was chosen cause its not that far from a bunch of bigger population centers

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:40 (four years ago) link

also being named golden state in a state that has 3 other nba teams is pretty funny, shd change the name to the bay warriors imo

theres also the san jose sharks, wild

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:43 (four years ago) link

on the one hand i respect oaklands claim to the warriors and all the race-class dynamics that inform it but on the other its normal to have the sports team play in the central city of a metro area, and also its sad that the once bohemian city of san francisco is now synonymous with intolerable rich nerds

lag∞n, Monday, 27 May 2019 19:52 (four years ago) link

it's weird to think that san francisco used to be a sort of normal city when now it's like global capitalism has thrown all of its money into a dump truck and dumped it right there. it's sort of inevitable that the warriors would move but still kind of sad.

ciderpress, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 01:06 (four years ago) link

yeah steph didnt shoot well last night for sure. but dont forget he shot three full court heaves at the end of quarters so he doesnt care about his shooting %'s. im more confused by kerr not putting the ball in his hands and just letting him go to work. he had ZERO iso plays in the 4th and only a couple PNRs.

big city slam (Spottie), Friday, 14 June 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

he was below 50% FG each game of Finals, that's about all I can criticize. thought he actually played good D at a few key moments in various games.

i kind of ended up on the bandwagon after all with this series so last night was very fun for me. as sad as it is for gsw fans with with those big injuries i can't help but think that this was probably it for the raptors, they'll lose leonard and end up being a team that makes the playoffs but isn't a real contender (not the worse thing in the world, of course)

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 14 June 2019 19:14 (four years ago) link

frogbs, Friday, 14 June 2019 19:18 (four years ago) link

kawhi is prob the only star in the league i cld see taking off after winning a ring, like he wldnt even think it was weird, but u gotta think the raps have a good shot at retaining him, they just won it all!

lag∞n, Friday, 14 June 2019 19:19 (four years ago) link

idk i think Kawhi can leave Toronto a hero with no hard feelings which will make it somewhat easier, the fanbase knew going into this season that he was likely to bolt and this is just the best-case scenario for them and also for him. I think if the Raps lost this series and then he left it would be so much harder on them (and a bit harder on him).

omar little, Friday, 14 June 2019 19:46 (four years ago) link

I don’t care if Kawhi goes to LA, I’d rather keep him if possible but really as long as Ujiri is at the helm that’s what matters.

This sums up how much of a nightmare the parade (which ended with a shooting) was today:

http://torontosun.com/sports/basketball/nba/toronto-raptors/simmons-parade-was-a-disaster-on-many-levels

We brought the whole school down to the gym to watch it this morning, but because nothing was happening forever, the kids understandably got noisier and noisier, until everyone headed back to their own classes to watch. By mid-afternoon, the players were still making their way to Nathan Phillips Square.

The Sun's terrible except for sports, where they tend to cover stuff much more in depth (for years, pre-internet, they were the only place you could get detailed baseball stats). I thought Simmons captured yesterday pretty well.

clemenza, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 14:09 (four years ago) link

why is he so happy Brett Hull wasn't there? Huh?

maffew12, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 14:29 (four years ago) link

There were 2 million people in the streets. The shooting was despicable but it was an isolated incident. Yes, it was hot and slow, but that all was forgotten once the buses crawled past and the crowd exploded in cheers. The feeling of community was intense; everyone decked in Raptors merch like it was the uniform in a communist country. It was thrilling; many workplaces (like mine) were empty most of the day, everyone watching from somewhere, and the good vibes lasted all afternoon. And fuck the Sun. They're probably bitter their boy was booed by 65K at Nathan Phillips and snubbed by Masai on the parade route.

dinnerboat, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 15:05 (four years ago) link

nice

lag∞n, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 15:43 (four years ago) link

I wouldn't pin that on the Sun (again, I know the many problems with the Sun). I'm sure everyone experienced yesterday differently, and if you were there, I'm glad you had a great time. Watching on TV, though, they seemed quite unprepared for the crowd, the whole thing seemed interminable, and the shooting was the final negative, not the first.
