one month passes...

The new SAULT album is so good she’s quickly becoming my favorite artist of the year.

Listen to “let me go” it’s like northern soul with Jaki Liebezeit styled drums.

All Hail the Silence - a duo of BT and Christian Burns that tries to emulate the moody synthpop of the 80's. for whatever reason this album is like 84 minutes long but it's still very good, they mostly nail it even though they really could've trimmed like every single track down

Neil Hamburger - Still Dwelling - this is a parody of those vanity covers albums that certain famous people made a long long time ago, where the musical backing is very professional but the lead singer is not. mostly covers of 60's tunes, somehow really fun to listen to

Underworld - Drift - my favorite stuff of the year so far. Volume 3 is my favorite so far but 4 may well top it

Dam-Funk - STFU II - not sure if this is considered an EP or an LP but it's pretty lush. not terribly different than anything else he does, but hey

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 21:57 (four years ago) link

this one track by jute gyte is absolutely transcendent imo, even by his standards - no longer metal, avant-classical, techno, ambient or anything else. a monumental breakthrough. ffo any weird music but reminds me of the last low album, albeit run through some devilish, hugely maximalist algorithm. might reach beyond his usual fanclub as it trades the usual screams and shredding for some sort of tuneful ultra-processed arrangement

Albums I've enjoyed so far this year (excluding metal, which I posted to the appropriate thread, and classical, which I'm not done catching up with yet). I have no idea why they happen to be primarily ambient:

Arild Andersen, Clive Bell & Mark Wastell - Tales of Hackney (ambient jazz)
Billy Woods & Kenny Segal - Hiding Places (hip hop)
The Caretaker - Everywhere, an Empty Bliss (ambient)
The Caretaker - Everywhere at the End of Time 1-6 (ambient)
The Chi Factory - The Mantra Recordings (tribal ambient)
Emerld - Demonic Inspiration (dark ambient)
Fennesz - Agora (ambient)
Ifriqqiyya Électrique - Laylet el Booree (North African/industrial)
Marissa Nadler & Stephen Brodsky - Droneflower (dark folk)
Maurice Louca - Elephantine (Arabic jazz)
Michael Tanner with Alison Cotton and Lino Capra Vaccina - The Blackening (ambient)
Michele Rabbia, Gianluca Petrella & Eivind Aarset - Lost River (ambient jazz)
MSYLMA - Dhil-un Taht Shajarat Al-Zaqum (Arabic pop)
Nivhek - After Its Own Death / Walking in a Spiral Towards the House (ambient)
Non Violent Communication - Obserwacje (jazz)
Robert Rich - Tactile Ground (ambient)
Tanya Tagaq - Toothsayer (contemporary Inuit)
Uboa - The Origin of My Depression (death industrial)
Underworld - Drift: Episode 2, ‘Atom’ (electronic)
Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising (art pop)

Forgive the lame subgenre tags, but they do come in handy.

Pom have you heard ΛΗΤΩ by Dalot, it's another ambient album that has feels very much like a London album like Hackney Tales, but evoked more through field recordings and moody atmospherics on this one. It is pretty damn good!

Doesn't ring a bell, but I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks, calz!

pomenitul, Sunday, 14 July 2019 09:12 (four years ago) link

I probably got the wrong idea it was a London themed album because of comments in a review + one track being titled London, it is more to do with childhood memories apparently - but it did evoke living in London to me for some mysterious reason.

calzino, Sunday, 14 July 2019 09:32 (four years ago) link

London set alongside various Mediterranean cities is a good starting point for an ambient album.

one of my favorite new bands, sault, already has a second record out

https://saultglobal.bandcamp.com/

maura, Friday, 27 September 2019 15:28 (four years ago) link

How are SAULT so good? They’re like Stereolab for me in that their sound is a collection of influences that win me over as soon as I hit play.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 27 September 2019 15:41 (four years ago) link

And both their albums from this year are amongst my favorite things I’ve listened in 2019. I can’t even remember when was the last time that this happened.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 27 September 2019 15:43 (four years ago) link

Uh oh, sounds like I gotta check em out

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 27 September 2019 15:45 (four years ago) link

Hahaha the comparison to Stereolab is not really about how they sound. It’s more about how they synthesize and compile music genres I love into their own style.

I guess both Sault and Stereolab have a krautrock and funk influence but that’s as far as it goes. Where Stereolab is more post-punk and lounge, Sault is more northern soul and afrobeat.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 27 September 2019 16:14 (four years ago) link

i get an ESG/Konk vibe too

maura, Friday, 27 September 2019 16:49 (four years ago) link

The people behind this are still largely a mystery afaik but the drummer and bass player are definitely experienced. Both records are filled with some great grooves.

And yeah, I also think ESG is definitely an influence! on another ilm thread I wrote on 5:

“Ticks too many boxes of things I love: ESG-styled basslines + Jaki Liebezeit-styled drums + Northern Soul-styled vocal + afrobeat-styled guitars”

I find 7 has a more “pop” sound that 5. There’s a couple of songs in there that remind me of Mark Ronson of all people, particularly to his “Version” album. I suppose that sounds terribly off-putting to several people here on ILM so I’d recommend to try 5 first.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 27 September 2019 17:27 (four years ago) link

Gave Velvet Negroni another chance but it’s not connecting with me. There’s plenty of sounds in there which I like but as a whole package it’s not working for me, it’s just not my aesthetic at all, for every moment inside the song that fascinates me there’s two that I find boring... the length of the songs is fairly standard but it feels like they’re much longer.. speaking of, I’m also in the minority that doesn’t connect with Frank Ocean’s Blond and that’s the record it reminds me the most.

That said, I like “Feel Let”, imho it’s the one with the most interesting sounds.

Two great albums from South Africa that deserve a wider audience on ILM:

Singer Samthing Soweto just released his first solo album (titled Isphithiphithi) since making his name two years ago with his feature on Sun-El Musician’s gorgeous “Akanamali” (a/k/a The Singles Jukebox’s highest rated song of 2017 and the #6 in ILM’s 2017 EOY Top Tracks).
It features a beautiful mix of South African soul tracks and smooth amapiano house jams.

For the former, try “Umuhle Uyasabeka” or “Omama Bomthandazo”, for the later “Akulaleki”.

Speaking of amapiano, the jazzy-or-is-it house sound ruling the clubs and charts of SA that owes a surprising lot to Larry Heard:
For an album of back-to-back smooth jams and bangers in that vein, may I recommend Scorpion Kings (nominally an EP) by DJ Maphorisa & Kabza De Small, who were also involved in the Samthing album. Try “Amantombazane” (with Samthing), “Vula Vala” or “We’Mama”.

I heard this track last night on a New Orleans radio station that I listen to a lot and it prompted an immediate Shazam. GREAT tune, like a funkier Crowded House channelling F. Scott Fitzgerald. (But in a good way.) Can't find much about the guy, I guess he's from Bolton and is legally deaf. Not sure he even has an album out.

Sheesh, one more time.
