So at least what, three, four character arcs they completely FUBARed there?

but Cleganebowl!!

remembering that D&D have been developing a new Star Wars trilogy for the last while has helped me understand the direction

Simon H., Monday, 13 May 2019 02:36 (four years ago) link

the only good way forward for the last season is if Dany goes mad like her father, that would rule

― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, July 24, 2017 12:03 AM (one year ago)

hmmmmm

Simon H., Monday, 13 May 2019 02:40 (four years ago) link

It was the right story direction, but they really rushed to it didn’t they

yup

Simon H., Monday, 13 May 2019 03:02 (four years ago) link

question is, whose face will arya be wearing when she merks dany

gbx, Monday, 13 May 2019 03:03 (four years ago) link

It just feels insubstantial, like the only reason Dany didn’t indulge her urge to burninate everything last week was because there were two more whole episodes to fill

i think ur a controp (voodoo chili), Monday, 13 May 2019 03:04 (four years ago) link

someone do a simpsons meme with bart showing ralph wiggum’s heart breaking in slow motion to lisa juxtaposed with tyrion looking broken as danerys goes ham with the dragon

Hold on

Dany going mad was a good choice and I didn't predict it would happen like this. Well done to whoever came up with it, GRRM.

The rest of the episode, uh

adam the (abanana), Monday, 13 May 2019 03:28 (four years ago) link

That was a very good and well-staged episode IMO but dammit I wish they hadn’t rushed to get to it. I’m usually in favor of shorter tv seasons but this is definitely a case where more episodes would have been better.

Yeah, it explains a lot. Apparently HBO was going to give them all the resources and episodes they needed to finish but D&D chose to do it in six episodes. They’re clearly in a hurry to move on.

Not having any more book material to work with probably didn’t help either.

Conceptualize Wyverns (latebloomer), Monday, 13 May 2019 03:33 (four years ago) link

i don't see what Dany did as being particularly "mad" -- it was comparable to the US military strategy at the end of WW2 (e.g. Dresden) -- and speaking of which, I did love the Cersei/Quyburn tribute to the Hitler bunker scene in Downfall

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 03:50 (four years ago) link

Qyburn getting his watermelon smashed was my favorite thing in the episode

Simon H., Monday, 13 May 2019 03:52 (four years ago) link

i found this episode pretty satisfying

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 03:54 (four years ago) link

Appreciated the total lack of Danerys-on-dragon shots. We don’t need her motivation, because whatever it is, it’s fucked

although the entire confrontation with her back home was very close to a “you need a snickers” commercial

mh, Monday, 13 May 2019 03:56 (four years ago) link

Think of all the kids whose parents named them Daenerys or Khaleesi

boo fucking hoo, my name's still theon

difficult listening hour, Monday, 13 May 2019 03:59 (four years ago) link

is there any money on whether Arya takes out the new queen

mh, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:00 (four years ago) link

i don't see what Dany did as being particularly "mad" -- it was comparable to the US military strategy at the end of WW2 (e.g. Dresden)

The US hadn't even begun the invasion of Germany during the Dresden firebombing.

The Allies*

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 13 May 2019 04:04 (four years ago) link

pretty sure we were bombing cities while the Russians were already in Germany and the war was more or less over, minus Hitler's surrender ... basically Hitler wouldn't surrender, so we bombed the fuck out of Germany and then he killed himself

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:06 (four years ago) link

and if you think of this episode in terms of Dany being distrustful of Jon, in a similar way that the US was of Russia -- what she did was totally sane and tactical -- it's what Curtis LeMay would have done

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:08 (four years ago) link

not a huge thing, but a single shot of Ellaria Sand would have gone a long way.

Simon H., Monday, 13 May 2019 04:10 (four years ago) link

Appreciated the total lack of Danerys-on-dragon shots.

yah, that really stood out to me

gbx, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:13 (four years ago) link

pretty sure we were bombing cities while the Russians were already in Germany and the war was more or less over,

the Dresden bombing began a month after the Battle of the Bulge (and before the Western Allies entered Germany, yes, I got tripped up by the first US reference) the war was far from "more or less" over.

The Sack of King's Landing II is more like the Emperor surrendering and then we drop a couple of atomic bombs on Tokyo proper for good measure (which we... did not do).

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 13 May 2019 04:25 (four years ago) link

xp we’re not really meant to empathize with her here, and Grey Worm’s face as he’s doing the “fuck it, kill em all” spear throw tells all

mh, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:34 (four years ago) link

re Dresden: it was really just a question of how long the Germans would hold out ... like, a month or maybe 8 or 9, at most, but they were pretty much guaranteed losers at that point. The Japan comparison is bogus, because Cersei hadn't surrendered ... one squadron of kings army soldiers threw down their swords ... like, nahh.

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:35 (four years ago) link

did we see a second squadron? there’s like one main entrance and they were the leaders of the charge

the bells were ringing, swords are down, and cersei could have tried to hold shit in the keep but the one shot we get is Danerys pondering for a second with flared nostrils deciding the peaceful option is bullshit. burns down civilians almost immediately after!

mh, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:41 (four years ago) link

like, we're talking about less geographical territory, but this is more like, Nazi regiments surrendering in France and Belgium, so we move on to the center of Nazi power such that Germany = Kings Landing

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:42 (four years ago) link

er, the central part of Kings Landing -- past those gates, would be Germany --

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:43 (four years ago) link

Like, I'm not saying that makes her a great person, but it's a totally rational tactical deployment as far as military strategy goes -- just think how nice the Germans and Japanese were to the U.S./Allies a generation or so after we bombed the fuck out of them.

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:44 (four years ago) link

would've been so much more satisfying if they'd made it to the boat and he just bleeds to death far into the ocean and leave them both fucked.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:46 (four years ago) link

"it was really just a question of how long the Germans would hold out ... like, a month or maybe 8 or 9, at most" - given that they held out longer than one month and that 8 or 9 was a greater period of time than D-Day to Dresden.

The city's surrender bells had tolled and there was no fighting when Danaerys unleashed the sack. What she did was the Rape of Nanking, medieval fantasy-style.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 13 May 2019 04:50 (four years ago) link

Like, I'm not saying that makes her a great person, but it's a totally rational tactical deployment as far as military strategy goes

re: distrust of Russia, the analogy there would be if Dany started contemplating an alliance with Cersei against Jon

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 13 May 2019 04:52 (four years ago) link

despite air superiority, modern day warfare seems a poor comparison

mh, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:53 (four years ago) link

all i'm saying is that it isn't crazy as far as military strategy goes -- ruthless, yes, violating the geneva conventions or whatever, sure, but not crazy

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:58 (four years ago) link

who rang the bell?

I was mostly satisfied with the episode. The horror of war/slaughter had a much greater impact then any of the fighting vs the night king army. And glad there were a lot of plans that immediately went to shit. The Euron fight was a pretty stupid way to get rid of him, that could've been better.

dan selzer, Monday, 13 May 2019 04:59 (four years ago) link

maybe the bombing of Nagasaki would be a better analogy ... idk.

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 05:00 (four years ago) link

xp - dan otm -- it was totally unclear whether that bell ringing meant anyone was actually surrendering

sarahell, Monday, 13 May 2019 05:01 (four years ago) link

Tyrion did a whole speech about listening for the bells like 15 minutes before that

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 13 May 2019 05:07 (four years ago) link

it meant they were surrendering because the script tells us half a dozen times that that’s what it means. it’s clear. xp

ryan, Monday, 13 May 2019 05:10 (four years ago) link

Arya murking Dany is basically the only satisfying conclusion to this.

agreed, i mean even though i liked the battle of Winterfell episode this one was a lot better and the character stuff was much more interesting by far. i do like the relative audacity of this heel turn for Daenerys even though it was telegraphed as being kinda built into her DNA from the beginning of the show.

omar little, Monday, 13 May 2019 05:49 (four years ago) link

Glad Euron got skewered but I was kinda bummed that it was at the expense of Jaime :(

Arya “can I get a ride on a white horse” moment was cool i guess

but again these moments in this wildly truncated season where a character just completely undoes seasons of development kinda fristrating
ie Arya the girl with no name stone cold icezombie killer i will kill cersei i go to kings landing for revenge revenge revenge -
“hey dont come up here or you’ll die”
*cryface* “...’k”

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 13 May 2019 05:51 (four years ago) link

dragon going ham on kings landing WAS pretty awesome to watch tho

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 13 May 2019 05:52 (four years ago) link

Maybe I’m projecting or giving the show too much credit but I think Sandor saying “don’t turn out like me” was what changed her mind.

Conceptualize Wyverns (latebloomer), Monday, 13 May 2019 06:03 (four years ago) link

This special 9/11 episode was dandy but I didn’t understand why Arya turned into the Horse Whisperer at the end
