Remind me where the joke was.

at least now he's got the honest apology out of his system i guess this will be the last we will hear of this matter from him.
― calzino, Friday, 10 May 2019 12:44 (four years ago) link
sincerely like it that a tweet thread with various swears and typos can now be considered a 'formal apology' and also be reported as such by newspapers
― Terry Major-Ball Will Tell You (DJ Mencap), Friday, 10 May 2019 12:53 (four years ago) link
... so what was the correct photo? If that's hilarious, then maybe all is forgiven?
― StanM, Friday, 10 May 2019 13:55 (four years ago) link
honestly struggle with believing he's somehow missed out on the "black people are monkeys" racist trope in his 6 decades of living in britain or not put two and two together when posting that picture. like we're talking next level being a thick cunt if that's to be believed
― findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:01 (four years ago) link
I think the excuse is he didn’t know the baby was mixed race when he posted the pic
― milkshake chuk (wins), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:07 (four years ago) link
am inclined to believe him tbh, but this is definitely an exception to the 'if it smells like a racist' rule
― imago, Friday, 10 May 2019 19:09 (four years ago) link
In that case he has outed himself as a dimwit of staggering proportions.
― Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:13 (four years ago) link
seems entirely likely that as both he and Camaraderie have stated, he frequently posts pictures of chimps in clothes to represent posh fuckwits, and didn't think "hmm do other people use chimps in clothes to represent other minorities?" in this one instance
what's really getting me about this is the brazen hypocrisy of the bbc, who promote racists and far-right ideologues at any given opportunity
good to know that the human resources manager for a medium wave sports radio station is the exact same person as the tory who heads the news division or whoever books question time, admirable sharing of resources
― blokes you can't rust (sic), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:34 (four years ago) link
A colleague, who I would not describe as stupid, did not get how the joke was racist, turns out he didn't know Megan was mixed race.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:49 (four years ago) link
ugh, i am kind of on the "PC Gone Mad!" side for this one
kind of like the ilhan omar thing. clodheaded but whatever. apologies should mean something. people shouldn't be afraid to say the wrong thing, reflect, and recalibrate, which DB seems to have done
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 10 May 2019 21:04 (four years ago) link
I'd watched a storyline on a tv show v similar to this (woman calling toddler a 'cheeky little monkey', gets called racist) and still didn't clock this when I saw the pic. Just thought it was a daft royal family joek. I didn't realise MM was mixed race for ages either, and then didn't realise how many people actually cared about that, so perhaps my finger is not exactly on the pulse
― kinder, Friday, 10 May 2019 21:12 (four years ago) link
obv if I was in the public eye I might consider what I was posting for more than 0.01 second
― kinder, Friday, 10 May 2019 21:14 (four years ago) link
nods
― deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Friday, 10 May 2019 22:33 (four years ago) link
Which is the point, yes.

This is the problem with fearless iconoclasm though: unless you're Lou Reed, it'll eventually bite your arse. And if you're Lou Reed you would enjoy having your arse bitten, anyway.
Fwiw, as these things go, that's a pretty decent fist at an apology. I don't wish him any ill.
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Saturday, 11 May 2019 09:00 (four years ago) link
where is he going next, TalkSport? Glad I won't hear his annoying as fuck shtick (even for a few seconds) when channel surfing my dab.
― calzino, Saturday, 11 May 2019 09:11 (four years ago) link
just had the radio on the kitchen and this week's replacement is even worse, some basic as fuck interviewing minor celebs bullshit, it's Saturday and you're supposed to be the sports station fffs
― call me cismale (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 11 May 2019 09:16 (four years ago) link
It's Geoff Lloyd, I think. Inoffensive to the point of invisibility.

the history of stand up comedians from the world of r4 comedy/Edinburgh fringe/"the circuit" 1990-2019 is going to be an essential read one day.

it'll be a short lived + pyrrhic victory for the haters when Geoff Norcott gets the old Baker slot.

Chris Evans & Gazza or gtfo

There was an extended bit on Baker on the News Quiz last night with Desiree Burch and Andrew Maxwell both being fairly merciless.
I don't know why I listen to the News Quiz. It's some bizarre form of self-punishment.
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Saturday, 11 May 2019 09:41 (four years ago) link
cos Miles Jupp is so frigging hilarious :p

well he would be for me if I cracked up as much as he does at his own jokes sometimes.

Rehabilitation seems underway already. Street-Porter defending him at length in the i (apparently there's not enough Londoners on the been seems to be her main point) and that it's hard to know what's offensive "these days". Bleagh.

"been" = "beeb"
mr been

Pity, I thought JSP might be using Cockney rhyming slang, as spoken on the streets of London, as Ralph McTell once memorably sang, to lend support her fellow Londoner, Danny Baker.
― Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Saturday, 11 May 2019 11:30 (four years ago) link
there's a bit more feeling in this rehabilitation as baker seems like a decent man who screwed up due to thoughtlessness rather than an actual bastard, i.e. [¡]his cancellation could have happened to any of us, really[/¡]
― imago, Saturday, 11 May 2019 11:33 (four years ago) link
i mean, it couldn't, because a lot of people would never make that mistake, but there's a fair perception that this fuckup is relatable
― imago, Saturday, 11 May 2019 11:34 (four years ago) link
I'll take getting cancelled, as long as I've got a few hundred grand in the bank for doing a weekly Colin Hunt impression.

Is it racist to assume a royal baby is white? Like is there a bias at play where people assume MM is white because a British prince married her?
I believe DB had no idea and his apology is genuine but there were a few big stories about her race at the time. Wasn't there a UKIP leader or his girlfriend or both in the shit about a bunch of monkey posts when the pregnancy or wedding were announced?
― Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Saturday, 11 May 2019 13:36 (four years ago) link
Not knowing MM is mixed race, in 2019, is pretty weird imo.
― Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Saturday, 11 May 2019 13:40 (four years ago) link
I don't know why people are so invested in saving Danny Baker's career anyway, he's an annoying cunt who's long past his sell-by date.
― Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Saturday, 11 May 2019 13:41 (four years ago) link
Lotta people really hoping for that reboot of Pets Win Prizes i guess
― Doctor Nu (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 11 May 2019 13:46 (four years ago) link
but there were a few big stories about her race at the time.
Like having an African-American Episcopalian preacher giving a holy rolling sermon at their wedding and having a African-American mother, for instance?
― Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Saturday, 11 May 2019 13:47 (four years ago) link
I literally had no idea there even was a royal baby until the morning it was born but I was obv aware of markle’s race, frankly I don’t believe baker at all on that score. Can totally believe kinder’s account of not following this kind of thing and taking a little while to clock it, but being a professional media gobshite and being unaware until *this week*? Fuck off. At best I can believe he momentarily forgot in his rush to post this excellent comedic material, it’s a pretty classic gaff and I’m glad he’s taking his lumps
― milkshake chuk (wins), Saturday, 11 May 2019 13:59 (four years ago) link
it's really really easy to not give a shit about the royal family
like genuinely just completely ignore them
DB seems like someone whose instinct is to do this but for reasons of personal branding is also dutybound to attempt off-the-cuff lolrandom topical humour, which is a combo that's nailed-on going to fuck you up sooner or later
― Terry Major-Ball Will Tell You (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 11 May 2019 14:03 (four years ago) link
I bet you I give even less of a shit about the royal family than Danny Baker so I'm not buying that argument - mind you I don't know about calzino.
― Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Saturday, 11 May 2019 14:06 (four years ago) link
even if you don't gaf about them, just listening to 15 minutes of radio tv news bulletins in a day will expose you to information about them. idgaf about marvel superhero movies, but in a pub-quiz could probably answer which hollywood actor cunt plays who.
