apparently no one remembers Sigourney Weaver (and Paul Rudnick) parodying Marianne Williamson in 1995

They should not keep putting out live episodes if they want people to keep buying tickets to their shows.

tbh I thought that Berlin one was better than their last few "proper" ones

alan moore has gone on chapo

the crossover event of the summer

saw the title, was somewhat skeptical, and after listening to about 30 seconds: yup, that's Alan

not safe for listening on the way to work. he almost put me into an induced hypnotic sleep state by calmly droning on about his definition of magic

mh, Monday, 10 June 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

not a surprising get considering Will "edited" his recent tome but still neat

decades of heroic weed consumption, magickal workings and thinking more deeply about the town of northampton that anyone ever has or ever will again have given him eldritch powers which may or may not stand up to the psychich assault of felix biederman's stream of consciousness about fortnite, uncles and knausgaard

good ep albeit tragically felix-free

Downloaded a couple of eps of producer Chris's music podcast (And Introducing), it's pretty good (ie more listenable than Chapo has been lately). I'm halfway through the one about Meet Me In The Bathroom, it's ridiculously long (2.5 hours) and it's endearing to see someone's take on it a few years younger than me/the average ILXor. They still think all the people involved in the early '00s rock scene were kind of cool, it's adorable.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 07:54 (four years ago) link

I was going to ask who from the show picked The Fall to end the latest episode, but figured it was Chris.

naus, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 14:52 (four years ago) link

i feel like everyone involved in chapo has a tragic taste in music

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 15:50 (four years ago) link

they used to pick pretty good music to end the episodes until they presumably got too big and didn't want to draw attention. distinctly remember an ep ending with "who makes the nazis".

oiocha, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 18:07 (four years ago) link

xp to milo

is there a good representative episode of that podcast (And Introducing) that's a good start?

the one about the book, which I've read and have spent all my own commentary on, is simultaneously intriguing because they're younger and making me holler about how they seem to have missed a bunch of experiences of seeing shows in houses, 90s music scenes, whatever

mh, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 23:05 (four years ago) link

And Introducing is fantastic! My introduction was the one Felix guested on about Kanye's tweets. I thought that one was pretty fun, but it's kind of atypical for the show. I honestly think the show's first episode is still one of the best.

OneSecondBefore, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 01:05 (four years ago) link

The one about The Hacienda is pretty good too.

OneSecondBefore, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 01:06 (four years ago) link

I've only listened to that one and part of the Felix Soundcloud rap episode - I think the book one is pretty representative, non-cynical 30-year olds' takes on music

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 01:29 (four years ago) link

the greatest Chapo running gag is that their producers/engineers have much better radio voices than anyone actually on the show

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Wednesday, 12 June 2019 01:30 (four years ago) link

ilx is pretty much all rockist now isn't it

viborg, Wednesday, 12 June 2019 04:21 (four years ago) link

Should I listen to the hacienda episode though? I do tend to avoid podcasts and only experience them vicariously in forums such as this.

they also had the fall at the end of an older episode pre-chris

Checking this out for the first time. Liked the Alan Moore episode basically because it was Alan Moore and always interesting to hear him talk. Had to turn off the live in Berlin episode as I cannot think of anything I'd rather listen to less than American punk types making shit jokes about dance music. Is it worth checking out other episodes or are they always like this?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 15 June 2019 11:47 (four years ago) link

That was probably the worst possible one to check out, generally the live ones are not well liked. Lemme scan for a representative recent ish one.

Simon H., Saturday, 15 June 2019 12:22 (four years ago) link

I liked 310, the one where they discover Marianne Williamson

Simon H., Saturday, 15 June 2019 12:29 (four years ago) link

The live eps are almost universally awful

gbx, Saturday, 15 June 2019 14:55 (four years ago) link

actually the Premium one they did excerpted from their UK shows was not bad, mostly cause it stuck to readings

Simon H., Saturday, 15 June 2019 14:56 (four years ago) link

All the shows are awful be honest

the Berlin one was so bad

this recent one w Ryan Grim is good and has a lot of the classically Chapo stuff

I'm not sure how on board with their pro-Sanders arguments vs. Warren work if Sanders can't pull more than 15% of the dem base. How can he rally a mass of the entire population to enact his agenda if he can barely crack 15% of the left?

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 20 June 2019 18:38 (four years ago) link

i think his appeal would be the corbyn thing. he will bring out the people that don't usually vote due to being disenfranchised- young working class people - and in the general he'll get the liberal voters that would eschew him in the primary.

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 June 2019 18:43 (four years ago) link

biden is the front runner in the dem primary so I'm assuming they're not a very "left" cohort of people. liberal baby boomers mainly i guess? (sorry, no idea of the social composition of registered democrats)

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 June 2019 18:43 (four years ago) link

i was at a retirement party on monday with a well-heeled, retired, baby boomer liberal who is heavily involved with some expat democrat org here and who hates sanders with the fire of a thousand burning suns and was in for biden.

I understand the appeal but I don't see Bernie making it real. His campaign feels like its running on autopilot. Maybe the polls are skewed but uh, thats a bullshit excuse.
