i hope i'll see them live again in july. unfortunately it's in a music festival.

btw, did anyone hear the new no rome's ep?
i'm enjoying it quite a lot, specially the first two emo tunes, although i would like them to be a little bit longer, i guess.

I hope that's actually the cover. It looks great.

A charming interviewee, I must say.

He looks a lot like Johnny Marr in that interview.

Their visual design is impeccable. Ugh.

that interview was terrific

that guy asked good unconventional questions! and good on those other folks for not interrupting the long story.

no doubt i was kuleshoving him but i enjoyed what seemed to me the progression in stages of the silent older guy's expression from "who is this vapid twerp" to "wow life"

They've won a couple of Ivor Novello's - best contemporary song for 'Love It If We Made It' and songwriters of the year.

apparetly the latest Notes news is that the lead single has been delayed until August, lol

k3vin k., Tuesday, 28 May 2019 00:26 (four years ago) link

Seems to me that they're - understandably - struggling to write and record a new album while still on the promotional cycle for the current one. It must be difficult for them to concentrate on the making of it for any length of time before having to fuck off somewhere else to play a gig or do a TV appearance or other promo.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 00:57 (four years ago) link

I don't think they'll be having any problems coming up with ideas, though.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 01:03 (four years ago) link

I was under the impression that it was done?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 28 May 2019 01:15 (four years ago) link

saw them tonight... they are of course superb. it's funny now in a 75 min set you're getting like 60% singles and only a few of their singles would be among my true favorite songs but it's a really fun, hit-packed, energetic show. (looking at setlists it seems like they basically have 3 shows: an hourlong festival set that is all new stuff and hits; a 75 min long festival set that is new stuff, hits, w/ a few head picks thrown in; a 90 min arena/amphitheater show that has a half dozen head picks). they still aren't incredibly loud but the band really does shine... "she's american" & "the sound" start to bend towards disco, even something like "change of heart" gets this sort of loose and limber almost danceable playing

J0rdan S., Sunday, 2 June 2019 08:29 (four years ago) link

last i heard on the album was early fall but they're on tour almost literally w/o break thru september so in my head i'm sort of just assuming october or november. it would just be very unlike them to release an album w/o being around to promo it heavily... when i interviewed matty he talked about understanding that their fans really respond to a traditional album rollout where there are these bread crumbs to fixate on and contextualize w/in the sort of mythology that true stans are always building. they do work extremely hard so it's not out of the question that they could try and pull it off while on tour in asia/australia but we'll see (i'm just speculating)

J0rdan S., Sunday, 2 June 2019 08:39 (four years ago) link

the original plan was to have a single in February and do a gradual rollout again with the album out about now i think? but judging from all the interviews they've given over the last while the album has taken longer than expected and since it's kept getting pushed back (before this latest delay there was supposed to be a single on May 31st) and i think in a recent interview Matty talked about how he's still coming up with new ideas for it. he's also talked about possibly just releasing the album all at once a few times so anything's possible, but i'd agree that october/november with maybe some singles seems most likely at this point. he keeps talking about how the main influences on the album are UK garage and Burial so i'm hoping there's a bunch of stuff that sounds like "how to draw/petrichor" but as like actual dance-pop songs not just as one of their cool soundscape things.

Extremely tantalizing details ... I would not be unhappy for them to forgo ‘real’ instruments completely and fully embrace their digital production sound

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 17:07 (four years ago) link

at this point i just want an album full of TOOTIMEs

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 17:17 (four years ago) link

I'm the opposite, I want to hear them sack off doing everything completely "in the box" and for them to embrace being a band in the traditional sense. I kinda see the "in the box" sound as being a trait of the music of this decade in general, and I'm feeling tired of it. I think the 2020's will see musicians rebelling against it and "authenticity" being a cool thing again.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 17:17 (four years ago) link

you guys are setting up a false dichotomy

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 June 2019 17:58 (four years ago) link

anyway matty said on insta that they're gonna put out new music in august but he doesn't know when the album is coming bcuz he's still working on it

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 June 2019 17:58 (four years ago) link

What are the chances that the band don't try and pull this kind of stunt again? They probably should have tried making two records at once and putting them out at once, a la Use Your Illusion, or making two records at once and then putting them out one at a time like Kid A and Amnesiac or what Manic Street Preachers did with Rewind the Film and Futurology ...

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link

like most pop musicians nowadays it seems like matty is always working on music... again you're presenting a dichotomy that i don't think is very relevant. there will def be some songs from the 'online relationships' sessions on the new album bcuz we know they recorded stuff w roy hargrove before he died that is gonna be on there

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:10 (four years ago) link

shoutout to the rest of the band to listening to matty's spiel before "love me" on this tour like 100 times w/o strangling him

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:10 (four years ago) link

I'm not presenting anything other than the opinion that perhaps announcing that you're going to write, record and release an album in 2018 and 2019 before you've a) started making the records and b) thought about how you're going to promote the records was a bit of a stupid, over-optimistic thing to do.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:12 (four years ago) link

ok?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:13 (four years ago) link

man who gives a shit, i barely believed both records would come out when he announced them

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:13 (four years ago) link

I had no idea whether they would be able to pull it off or not. Clearly, they couldn't.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:17 (four years ago) link

there will def be some songs from the 'online relationships' sessions on the new album bcuz we know they recorded stuff w roy hargrove before he died that is gonna be on there

Also, none of this really fills me with optimism. Just thinking of the words "A Brief Inquiry... off-cuts" gives me kind of a Reload vibe, and the presence of Roy Hargrove suggests that they're going to continue the awful faux-jazz aspect of their sound that suddenly sprung up like an unwelcome fart on last years record. I kinda feel bad about saying this, because on I Like It When You Sleep... they managed to tackle every style that record covers really well, but to me they're definitely not great at the faux-jazz thing. I understand that kind of thing is critic bait, and Radiohead incorporated these kind of elements into their sound really well on Kid A/Amnesiac, but it seems a bad fit for The 1975. The thing they're most best at are tracks like 'She's American' or 'Lostmyhead'.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:49 (four years ago) link

"sincerity is scary" is the best song on the last record

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:52 (four years ago) link

also the record's not even out yet and they've released zero music from it so... maybe you're completely wrong?

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:52 (four years ago) link

Xp- kind of like how your posts itt sprung up like an unwelcome fart

flopson, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:55 (four years ago) link

In this case, I'd be very much happy to be wrong! If they end up making a record that I enjoy as much as their second album, I'd have no complaints.

(x-post)

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 18:57 (four years ago) link

I sort of agree about the jazz stuff, I wasn’t really a fan of “sincerity” or “mine”

I would be interested in hearing a more genre-cohesive record, but with these guys you just have to take the filler with the killer at this point — what other band could give us such astonishingly complete, sonically disparate songs as “TOOTIME”, “how to draw/petrichor”, “love it if we made it”, I love america”, “it’s not living”, and “I always wanna die”?

k3vin k., Wednesday, 5 June 2019 19:03 (four years ago) link

"sincerity" is really in the mode of their r&b hybrids like "if i believe you" (i'm baffled you're not a fan k3v), i mainly brought it up bc the mention of roy hargrove does not imply an album full of "mine"s ffs

also who in the world would complain about the presence of roy hargrove

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 19:08 (four years ago) link

The only tracks that he played on on A Brief Inquiry... were 'Sincerity is Scary' and 'Mine', so they clearly used him because he fits with the style of those songs, and it's not too much of a stretch to believe that if he did play on anything else, it's likelier to be in a similar vein than not. Nobody said anything about an album full of this stuff, though, no idea where you're getting that from. They may very well have found another context for his playing and I'd be very much happy if that was the case.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 19:17 (four years ago) link

i feel like this band has by and large subverted obvious expectations like that

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 19:28 (four years ago) link

the obvious thing for them to do is to merge the jazz stuff with the live rock band stuff and make a shiina ringo album

ufo, Thursday, 6 June 2019 02:01 (four years ago) link

I want to be clear about one thing: “Mine” is great

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 June 2019 09:20 (four years ago) link

John Lennon legendarily used to refer to Paul McCartney's "old time" pastiches as "granny music", which is a term that I certainly think applies to 'Mine' ... although, I think at this point in musical history it's actually more "great-granny music" territory.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 6 June 2019 13:11 (four years ago) link

completely unrelated, but Ray Davies has way more granny songs than Paul.
