As an aside, I can’t stand the typo/misspelling that gives us GAFFS instead of GAFFES.

Will stick my head up here and say I really liked his show and that he tweeted the same photo at the last few royal births, dunno if you all want to flag me or tell me to fuck off or something

Did he tho? His line seems to be "he would have", not "he did" amd no one seems to have dug out these alleged tweets.

Ned Trifle X, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:58 (four years ago) link

He definitely didn't for the three Will'n'Kate births.

Charlton forum largely in accord with ILX here tbh, general line is that he wasn't being consciously racist but pretty thick. BBC decision generally regarded as a ridiculous kneejerk and I'd be inclined to agree on principle tbh - if there's no malicious intent, as seems pretty obvious, why sack him? Not that I'm shedding too many tears

what's the mumsnet consensus

Here we go.
Opened door, grinning Mail hack.
"Do you think black people look like monkeys?"
Any other time you'd knock someone right on their arse for saying that.
No mate. Gag pic. Posh baby chimp. Alerted to circs. Appalled. Deleted. Apologised.
He asks again! #MailonRacism

— Danny Baker (@prodnose) May 9, 2019

ironic that people are now knocking on his door asking for his views on non-whites

Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Thursday, 9 May 2019 12:16 (four years ago) link

xps can't find them, and quite likely imagined because loads of old people / chimps tea party etc. photos, it's one of his twitter things

Extremely unconvincing performance as a 'genuine member of the public' by the actress in that.

thanks!

meanwhile everyone plz to buy my book abt how great the rock press was back when ppl writing for it included *checks notes* ugh never mind

(i guess i dodged a bullet back when he was too important to reply to my emails lol)

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2019 13:20 (four years ago) link

That was a v good joke Nick B, better than the "PG gone mad" I'm seeing everywhere.

James O'Brien interviewed DB, he does not sound like he's taking it very well - https://www.lbc.co.uk/radio/presenters/james-obrien/danny-bakers-first-interview-since-being-sacked-by/

Also realised that his tweets seem to only go back to February for some reason?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 9 May 2019 13:23 (four years ago) link

what's really getting me about this is the brazen hypocrisy of the bbc, who promote racists and far-right ideologues at any given opportunity

imago, Thursday, 9 May 2019 13:33 (four years ago) link

wow shes only just given birth

this was good too

michael keaton IS jim thirlwell IN ‘foetaljuice’ (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 May 2019 13:34 (four years ago) link

i agree the BBC should not promote racists and far-right ideologues maybe they should sack Danny Baker

call me cismale (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 May 2019 13:41 (four years ago) link

If this means Farage isn't going to be invited onto everything then... yeah, not going to happen is it?

sugar getting some blowback from this too

Brendan O'Neil might be having one of them days where he worries he might be playing himself or maybe even experiencing a very lucid dream.

calzino, Thursday, 9 May 2019 15:02 (four years ago) link

Good morning, everyone.
Following one of the worst days of my life I just want to formally apologise for the outrage I caused and explain how I got myself into this mess.
I chose the wrong photo to illustrate a joke. Disastrously so.

— Danny Baker (@prodnose) May 10, 2019

xyzzzz__, Friday, 10 May 2019 12:21 (four years ago) link

It's a good and honest apology

xyzzzz__, Friday, 10 May 2019 12:23 (four years ago) link

Remind me where the joke was.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Friday, 10 May 2019 12:26 (four years ago) link

at least now he's got the honest apology out of his system i guess this will be the last we will hear of this matter from him.

calzino, Friday, 10 May 2019 12:44 (four years ago) link

sincerely like it that a tweet thread with various swears and typos can now be considered a 'formal apology' and also be reported as such by newspapers

Terry Major-Ball Will Tell You (DJ Mencap), Friday, 10 May 2019 12:53 (four years ago) link

... so what was the correct photo? If that's hilarious, then maybe all is forgiven?

StanM, Friday, 10 May 2019 13:55 (four years ago) link

honestly struggle with believing he's somehow missed out on the "black people are monkeys" racist trope in his 6 decades of living in britain or not put two and two together when posting that picture. like we're talking next level being a thick cunt if that's to be believed

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:01 (four years ago) link

I think the excuse is he didn’t know the baby was mixed race when he posted the pic

milkshake chuk (wins), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:07 (four years ago) link

am inclined to believe him tbh, but this is definitely an exception to the 'if it smells like a racist' rule

imago, Friday, 10 May 2019 19:09 (four years ago) link

In that case he has outed himself as a dimwit of staggering proportions.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:13 (four years ago) link

seems entirely likely that as both he and Camaraderie have stated, he frequently posts pictures of chimps in clothes to represent posh fuckwits, and didn't think "hmm do other people use chimps in clothes to represent other minorities?" in this one instance

what's really getting me about this is the brazen hypocrisy of the bbc, who promote racists and far-right ideologues at any given opportunity

good to know that the human resources manager for a medium wave sports radio station is the exact same person as the tory who heads the news division or whoever books question time, admirable sharing of resources

blokes you can't rust (sic), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:34 (four years ago) link

A colleague, who I would not describe as stupid, did not get how the joke was racist, turns out he didn't know Megan was mixed race.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 10 May 2019 19:49 (four years ago) link

ugh, i am kind of on the "PC Gone Mad!" side for this one

kind of like the ilhan omar thing. clodheaded but whatever. apologies should mean something. people shouldn't be afraid to say the wrong thing, reflect, and recalibrate, which DB seems to have done

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 10 May 2019 21:04 (four years ago) link

I'd watched a storyline on a tv show v similar to this (woman calling toddler a 'cheeky little monkey', gets called racist) and still didn't clock this when I saw the pic. Just thought it was a daft royal family joek. I didn't realise MM was mixed race for ages either, and then didn't realise how many people actually cared about that, so perhaps my finger is not exactly on the pulse

kinder, Friday, 10 May 2019 21:12 (four years ago) link

obv if I was in the public eye I might consider what I was posting for more than 0.01 second

kinder, Friday, 10 May 2019 21:14 (four years ago) link

nods

deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Friday, 10 May 2019 22:33 (four years ago) link

Which is the point, yes.

Mark G, Saturday, 11 May 2019 08:29 (four years ago) link

This is the problem with fearless iconoclasm though: unless you're Lou Reed, it'll eventually bite your arse. And if you're Lou Reed you would enjoy having your arse bitten, anyway.

Fwiw, as these things go, that's a pretty decent fist at an apology. I don't wish him any ill.

calzino, Saturday, 11 May 2019 09:11 (four years ago) link

just had the radio on the kitchen and this week's replacement is even worse, some basic as fuck interviewing minor celebs bullshit, it's Saturday and you're supposed to be the sports station fffs

call me cismale (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 11 May 2019 09:16 (four years ago) link

It's Geoff Lloyd, I think. Inoffensive to the point of invisibility.

the history of stand up comedians from the world of r4 comedy/Edinburgh fringe/"the circuit" 1990-2019 is going to be an essential read one day.
